How to Paint Stone

Instructions

  • Step 1: Mix vinegar and water Mix three parts white vinegar to one part warm water in a bowl.
  • Step 2: Clean the stone Clean the stone with a stiff-bristled brush and the vinegar solution.
  • TIP: If the stone was previously painted, you will need to use a commercial paint remover before cleaning to remove the existing finish.
  • Step 3: Rinse with water Use a wet sponge to rinse the stone and allow it to dry.
  • Step 4: Put down drop cloths Lay drop cloths down to prevent messes.
  • Step 5: Pour primer into tray Pour primer into the paint tray and paint the stone, getting the brush into every nook and cranny. Allow it to dry overnight.
  • Step 6: Pour paint into tray Pour latex or cement-based paint into a paint tray and paint the stone. Allow it to dry.
  • TIP: If you do a faux finish, you will multiple colors of paint, applied in layers to achieve your desired effect.
  • Step 7: Paint a second coat Paint a second coat on the stone and allow it to dry. Then clean up and enjoy your freshly-painted stone.
  • FACT: The Colosseum in Rome, completed in 80 B.C.E., is made of 100,000 cubic meters of travertine from a cave in Tivoli.
