How to Make Stilts Out of Old Cans

Instructions

  • Step 1: Gather coffee cans Wash two large coffee cans and remove the lids.
  • TIP: Juice and tomato cans work as well, as long as they are made of sturdy metal and are clean inside.
  • Step 2: Punch holes Punch two holes directly across from each other into the bottom of each can using the hammer and nail.
  • Step 3: Decorate cans Decorate your cans with acrylic paint, stickers or anything else your imagination comes up with.
  • Step 4: Trim rope Use the scissors to trim two pieces of rope to a length that allows you to hold them comfortably in your hands when they are looped around the bottoms of your feet.
  • TIP: You can also glue, tape, or nail a pair of old shoes to the bottom of the cans.
  • Step 5: Tie rope Slip the ropes through the holes in the cans and tie both ends together on the inside.
  • Step 6: Grasp rope and stand Grasp a rope loop in either hand, carefully stand on top of the cans. Slip the shoes on if you’ve attached them, and hold the ropes tight while you walk around. Enjoy the view!
  • FACT: Did you know? The back-necked stilt has the second longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by the flamingo.
