Now I’m going to show you how to do a Mummy’. So you want to get your white face paint and your sponge. We’re outlining the bandages so you don’t have to be perfect about this. Just dab it, first the eyes to give it a grungy look. Then you’re going to take some white. Now all you really have to do is press down with the brush and just quickly outline the teeth. And there you go- a Mummy!

“How to Do Face Painting:

Cheek Batman

So now we’re going to a cheek batman. We just going to make a nice circle on the cheek. This helps it dry a little faster. We’re going to take our fine tip brush and our black. Start with the batman’s face. Make an oval body slightly pointed. Then swoop the top of the wing up around the moon, down. Then you can leave it like this or you could add just some little bats in the background. And that is how to do a cheek batman.”

My name is Emma. I’m a face painter in Manhattan, New York. I own a business called Emma’s Designs, and we do everything from face painting, to balloons, to glitter tattoos for children’s entertainment. And adults’. I’ve been face painting for about three years now, and I always practice on myself. And now I will share with you some of my favorite faces, and tips, and tricks.

“How to Do Face Painting:

Brush Strokes

So now I’m going to show you some simple brush strokes that are used universally for face paint. So to start, the teardrop. With what you do is you press down, drag and slowly lift up. And this helps give you a thickened and a long skinny tail. Another universal brush stroke is the simple dot. And this is easily done by making sure your brush is at a point and just lightly pressing down and swirling it. And the more pressure you put, the bigger the dot. Or you can have very tiny dots. Next I will show you the tiger stripe but it is also used with the butterfly. To do a tiger stripe you start light, push down wiggle your brush, wiggle it up and let go. One more time, light, push down, wiggle, come back around and lift. And those are some brush strokes you can use in face painting.”

“Now I’m going to show you some of the tools you’ll want to use in face painting. We’ll start with the brushes, you can buy just any type of art brush, preferably ones with synthetic bristles or real hair. And they should be able to easily brush back and forth. They come in varying sizes, this one’s a 4, which is one of the most universal sizes that face painters use but then we have a 0 which is a very fine tip brush and then they range from very wide bristles to in-between.

Next we have sponges. You will want to buy specifically face painting sponges. You can find these on a variety of websites. Normally they come in a round, like this, this is actually from the brand called Snazaroo and what you can do then is cut them to make little wedges.

Next you will want to get FDA approved cosmetic paints. These are meant to be used on the face. There are also other brands such as Krylon, Ben Nye, Snazaroo but these are my favorites. They’re activated just by water, which I use a spray bottle for.

Next we have a paint called an arty brush and it has a variety of different colors next to each other which make a perfect stroke pattern and blend the colors perfectly together so you don’t have to.

Next we have glitter and they come in 2 different forms; liquid, which easily comes out in a gel form, which you can draw lines with, make dots. Next we have loose glitter and you just put some on your finger and then just dab it over the paint to make it glimmer.

And then last but not least, how to remove your face paint or to fix a mistake, baby wipes are the easiest way or if there’s any slight staining of a color, warm water and mild soap will do the trick.

“How to Do Face Painting:
Spiderman

Now we’re going to learn how to do Spiderman. And we’re going to apply it over the eyes making a point up in the corner. And we’re going to do this more as a mask. We’re not going to cover his mouth. And your number four brush and you’re going to make teardrops. Then you’ll do a spider right in the middle. That is how you do Spiderman.”

Now, we’re going to show you how to do a clown. So, to start, you’re going to want to get your white face paint. A little green sponge. Close your eyes. This is going to be on the mouth so. And make a red nose. And we’re just going to go over the tops as if to make eyebrows. You can add a little. And that’s how you do a clown.

To start we’re going to use some white on your sponge, and we’re going to start with the muzzle in the center of the face. And because he’s a male, we’re going to use just a typical orange face paint. And what I’m doing up top is I’m actually making a bit of an oval because that’s going to be an ear. And again, with a tiger you can add ears or you can just go straight up full on the face and not worry about adding ears. But I like it for boys. And then you can touch up on any place that might have gotten some orange on it that you don’t want. And we are going to start to do outlining of the ears. We’re just going to do little flicks, give it a fur-like feel. And you can do longer ones down the side. And just a little triangle on the inside of the ears. And on the top here we’re just going to do a few teardrops and the nose. With the nose you just want to do pretty much two triangles on each side of the nostril and then connect them in the center and then fill in. All done outlining his muzzle. And what I’m doing is I’m drawing a line and I’m pushing down and then pulling up. And that makes the thin to thick to thin. And then fill in the upper lip. You can fill in the bottom lip if you like. So now we’re going to add some of the finer details such as adding lines into the muzzle that kind of appear like whiskers but they’re obviously going the wrong way. But this is just, gives dimension. What I’m doing again is pressing down, wiggling my brush and then picking it up so that it goes from thicker to thinner. This is a very common stroke. Add some white dots into the stripes. And obviously we’re missing one important thing and that is the tiger’s teeth. For girls, this is a little bit of a difference. You can just make a dot, but for boys I like to really make a point. And that is how you do a boys tiger.

Right now we’re going to learn how to do a Dinosaur’ which will also be a Dragon’. So to start you’re going to want to pick a color. I’m going to use this light green. And you’ll start up in the eyes, covering the eyebrow as you mark. And then do the nose and mouth. You’re pretty much doing like the muzzle of any of the cats or dogs. Now we’re going to add white, pretty much reverse tear drops. Then you’re going to outline and add black accents. You don’t have to enclose the outline around the teeth. You want to add some flicks right between so that you have a little bit of more mean look. And then because most dragons and dinosaurs have a much wider nose than humans, you’re going to add its nose right on the upper lip. And that’s how to do a ferocious Dragon or Dinosaur’.

“Skull and Crossbones

Now I’m going to show you how to do a skull and crossbones. Now we’re going to start with the skull. And now we’re going to do the bones. And there you have a skull and crossbones.”

“How to Do Face Painting: Shark

So now we’re going to learn how to do a shark. So this is one of the boy’s favorites. We’re just going to start with some gray and always with sponging you kind of have to just eyeball the shape cause it is kind of hard to see in the beginning until you outline. Then you’re going to get some white. Add an eye. And even though it’s hard to see because it is white you can just do some little teeth. So you can really get in there and get the detail. Don’t forget the gills. Add another smaller fin in the back. That is how to do a very simple shark. And that’s how to do a shark. One of the boy’s favorites.”

“How to Do Face Painting:
Batman

Now I’m going to show you how to do Batman. And then fill in everything. And this is how you face paint Batman.”

And now we are going to show you how to do the Joker. And we are just going to cover his face with white, close your eyes for me. Add some wrinkles in the forehead; this is done with a dry sponge. So to complete the costume you can dye your hair green or spray paint it but this is the face paint of the Joker.

So, now we are going to learn how to do a very simple leopard or cheetah. We are just going to apply some white right above her eyebrow, like so. Can you turn your head for me? Thank you. Then, white for her muzzle. Then you are gong to apply a little white at the base on the cheekbone over here. And to make this look more like a leopard, we are going to add brown. One thing about this face is the brown you can interchange with any color. And again we are going to do the press down, drag up. And as with most cats and tigers, the press and drag for the whiskers. Now what makes a cheetah and a leopard is its spots and its infamous c-shaped spots. So we are just going to do some c’s, we like to call them, and some dots. And to make these c’s look a little more not like the alphabet we are going to use the same technique of the press and drag. Obviously on the white parts, it won’t show as much. And we can add some white dots. But for most girls who want to get tigers, we just add little dots into where we dredge down to make teeth, her bottom lip to give it a little more definition. And that is how to do a leopard or cheetah.

Now I’m going to show you how to do a lion. As with most of our animals, I’m going to start with white face paint and your sponge, across the middle of her nose and you’re going to kind of just sweep it in because this is actually going to make a mane and outline her muzzle. Add some just accents and some whiskers and there you go,a simple lion.

So now we’re going to learn how to do a snake. This is going to use a special already cake paint. As you can see, this paint has several different colors of green put together. You’re gonna get a flat brush and you’re just gonna swipe it into the paint. We’re gonna do two.. just kind of.. almost like two triangles at the end. Make some eyes, and some teeth. And that is how to do a snake.

“How to Do Face Painting:
Dalmation

So now we’re going to learn how to do a dalmation. This can also just be a simple dog. To start we’re going to sponge on white. Kind of whisp up some fur in the middle. And then make about a little bit of a triangular shape. Make his ears. Now that you’ve added the white I like to add the tongue so that it has a little time to dry. All doggies need a tongue. Do a teardrop in the tongue. Add some fur. What we’re going to do for the ears is just do a teardrop up on his ears. Black dot, couple of black dots. We’re going to just rim his eye using his eyebrow as a guide. Just kind of do a big squiggly outline circle. And that is how to do a Dalmatian or a simple dog.”

Now we will paint a kitty cat. And to start you’re going to want your white paint, as with most of our animals. And then take your pink. And we’re just going to start doing some outlines. So that’s a little pom-pom on her head. And there you have a kitty cat.

“How to Do Face Painting:
Butterfly

Now we’re going to learn how to do a butterfly. For this you’re going to want two different shades of a color. This I’m going to use pink. And you’re going to use a lighter and a darker shade. And apply it to the eye in an upward motion. And then you’re going to go around the outside keeping that shape with the point at the top. So circle for the head. Except you’re going to drag it in on the sides like so. And then just start to add highlights. And that is how you do the butterfly.”

Now I’ll teach you how to do a Fairy’. For this you’re going to want two colors. Close your eyes for me. Above and in-between. Now you’re going to take quite a wide brush and stick it into your white. I’m going to make very big tear drops. So I’ll do some smaller tear drops in the corner, some star bursts and some dots. And then you can add a jewel and some glitter. So, this is how to do a fairy.

Now we’re going to show you how to do a princess mermaid and this is also going to require a special face paint cake. This is an arti cake, that it has all these colors blended together, you’re just gonna swipe your brush in the middle. Add highlights on the… (inaudible). I’m just gonna do dots, then i’m gonna do tear drops in the corners of her eyes. Then i’m gonna do some bigger dots kind of going up as if they were bubbles. And that’s how you do a mermaid princess.

Now we’re going to do a tribal princess. We’re going to do a mask for this princess. And again, we’re going to use our fine tip brush and really can just do for outlining the mask just swirls and dots as well. A tribal mask is based off of its line work. And a diamond shape in the center. Now on this side you see I left a space. What we’re going to do is we’re going to really work a nice tribal-like design in. Turn your head this way. These dots in face painting are your best friend. Add some teardrops. Okay, you can open your eyes now. And that is how to do a very simple, yet very pretty tribal princess.

Witch

Now I’m going to show you how to do a simple witch. Apply it onto your sponge. Close your eyes for me. Then apply some on the lips. Then you’re going to get your black face paint. We’re also going to add a spider. And a dot on the nose. And then you can add some glitter. And there you have a simple witch.”

So, just in time for the wintery season, we’re going to learn how to do a winter princess. I’m going to go above the eyebrow. Well what we’ll start with is the snowflake in the center of her head, kind of as if you’re going to do just a starburst and then you’re just going to add little flicks on the side. And you can add another snowflake, as if the snow has fallen. Do another snowflake on this side. And what I like to do with masks is just to have a little bit of a trail of dots on each side to kind of give the mask it’s completion. And again for all princesses you can either add lipstick, but again, I prefer not to. I think it looks very pretty the way it is and that is how to do a winter princess.
