Once you have your fabric selected it’s time to start cutting. So, keep your fabric as it came on the bolt folded in half, it’s a lot easier to work with that way and we’re working with the width of our fabric as the width of the cape. So, take your measurement for the length of your fabric and measure down from the top of the cut, down across the length, until you hit the measurement you need. So, we’re going to just fold this up to get it out of the way.
We’re going to go down to about 40 inches for our cape. Once I see about 40 inches I can go ahead and take my scissors and cut across to make the length of our cape. Now, you don’t have to worry about cutting an imperfectly straight line. Once the cape is gathered and around your child no one will notice. Okay, so we have the length of our cape here.
The next thing to do is cut your ribbon. If you have a lot of ribbon, the one thing I like to do is to take the ends and just cut them at a 45 degree angle, especially if you’re working with a satin ribbon which can tend to fray. And now that we have out fabric and ribbon cut, we are ready to start making our cape.
