Now that you have your t-shirt selected, it’s time to make our scarf. It’s a really easy process. What you want to do is take your t-shirt and lay it out flat. We’re going to cut across the width of the t-shirt, and before you start cutting, kind of think about how big you want the neck portion of the scarf to be. That would be the part that actually goes around your neck from the fringe to the top. And think about how long you want your fringe to be as well. No right or wrong answer. Just kind of eyeball it and start cutting. We’re going to cut across, and if you’re more comfortable, you can mark this off with a water soluble marker before you begin. You can use a rotary cutter or a ruler. But I just kind of eyeballed it and cut the top off.
So now we have our scarf tube, and we need to cut the fringe. If you’re going to cut it from the side that’s cut, this makes for a really nice neckline with the hem at the top. When you’re stretching this out, especially if you’re going to double it over when you wear it, you don’t want the top to stretch out too much. It will lose its shape. So the hem actually helps to keep that in place. But if you want some added style to your scarf, or if you have a print that goes in one direction, you might want to cut from the hem side up. And you can see how the fringe on this will actually curl in where we’ve cut but then come back out at the hem, and maybe you like that for a stylistic feature on your scarf.
On our scarf here, I’m going to cut from the cut side, which is here, and leave the hem side as our neckline. So you can lay the t-shirt out flat and eyeball, or mark if you like, the width of your fringe. I’m going to do about an inch. You can do it narrower or longer. And I’m going to cut into the shirt, leaving about a four-inch space for the actual neck of the scarf. So we’ll just take our scissors and cut in about an inch wide for fringe. Now, this scarf is going to have some longer fringe. If you want a shorter fringe, you would cut strips that are not this long.
So you would just repeat this process all the way down, and once you have all of your fringe cut, we’ll get to making the fringe and tying off the knots.
