Okay. I’m going to show you how to make the basic knit stitch.
There are four components to the basic knit stitch. I call them in, around, up, and off. Every loop on your needle has a left side and a right side. To make the knit stitch, you’re going to insert your right needle into the left side of the loop on your left needle. In through the left, and notice that the needle is going away from you.
You’re going to wrap the yarn around the back needle, the one that you inserted, and that’s the “around” step. And then for “up,” you’re going to be coming straight out from where you went in to, and scooping up a new loop, here’s my new loop, and popping an old stitch off the needle. Again, that’s in from the left side, wrap the yarn around the back, scoop up a new loop, and pop the old loop off the back needle.
Here it is, a little faster. In from the left side, wrap around the back, scoop up the new loop, and pop the old stitch off. The faster you get, and the more comfortable you are at loading these stitches up towards the tip, the more you can combine steps three and four, so, it actually looks like in, around, up, and off. In, around, up, and off.
I like to hold the yarn with my right hand, but some people prefer to hold it in their left. To do the basic knit stitch holding the yarn in your left hand, you’ll do it exactly the same thing.
You’ll go in from the left side, but notice that the yarn is already here. All you have to do is scoop it up from below, and pull up that new loop. It could be a little faster, because the yarn is already there. In from the left side, catch that yarn, the needle tip going under the yarn, straight through the loop, and off. In, around, up, and off. In, around, up, and off.
And that is the basic knit stitch.
