Today, we’re making instruments from household items.

Today, we’re going to make a xylophone out of glass cups. What you’ll need: you’ll need four or five or six glass cups, a spoon, some water . . . I’ve got a little planter water. And to make things fun, some food coloring.

So what we’re going to do is we’re going to take the food coloring and we’re going to put it in . . . a dot in each one. To make things fun, we’re going to do it in some different sizes. I’m going to put a little bit in this one, and then I’m going to try different colors. Especially for the kids; I think they’ll really enjoy the different colors. Of course, make sure you do it so that you don’t make a mess. I’m going to fill this one a little bit more up. And so . . .

Okay, doesn’t that look pretty? I like it.

So that’s our basic glass xylophone. Try using different size cups to make different sounds. You can try bigger cups and smaller cups, since they’re going to make different noises.

I’m Allie Sunshine. This is part two on ‘How to Make a Vase Out of a Soda Bottle’. Now that we have the body of the vase constructed we are going to get our rubber bands out and cut the rubber bands in half. We’re going to tie them together. We’re going to take one of the rubber bands and we’re going to thread the macaroni through it like so. And we’re going to tie a knot.

That’s going sit with the ends of the soda bottle to secure the rubber bands. Then we are going to attach a couple of rubber bands to each other so we have a nice long string to run down the vase. Like so. We’re going to put the rubber bands together. We’re going to pull the string through. Then we’re going to take the popsicle stick and we’re going to attach it to the rubber bands.

This is going to make the base sound tighter or lower in pitch. And we’re going to put it back through the hole and we’re going to thread it through. Here’s what it sounds like. You can stretch the rubber bands to make noises. The tighter you hold the rubber bands the basier the sound. I like to sing ‘Take Me Out to The Ballgame’ with my vase bottle.

Johnny. Or I should say ‘Johnnie’. Take me out to the ballgame. Take me out to the crowd.

Today we’re making egg shaker maracas. What you’ll need is one egg carton, some rice, beans, or lentils, or anything that makes sounds, a pair of scissors, some tape, and paint is optional if you’d like to decorate.

Step one. Take out your egg carton and we’re not going to need the top half of the egg carton so we’re going to open it up and we’re going to cut off or pull off the top. Now we have the bottom of the egg carton.

We’re going to take the pair of scissors and we’re going to cut one piece of the whole egg carton off, so you’re going to actually have two, the top and the bottom. Once you have that you’re going to fill it up with some lentils, some rice. Different things make different sounds so be sure to experiment with them.

You put it together like so. Some might fall out. You’re going to need to take a piece of tape, you might need some really secure, strong tape, or glue would work as well. So we’re going to take it and put it in your hand and tape it together or glue it together if you want. Make sure it’s secure.

And then we’re going to get ready to jam, jam, jam. Beans and rice, sure sounds nice. Beans and rice, sure sounds nice.

We are making instruments from household items. And today we’re making a windchime out of a coathanger and some metal objects. This is a truly fun one to make. I take in lots of different things like washers. You can take keys. I’ve even added some of my favorite jewelry. My bracelet. I added my necklace. Put a little decoration on top of my necklace. You can have your kids go through their jewelry box and pick out some of your favorite jewelry. It’s really fun, and it’s colorful, and it sounds really good. So I’m going to show you how to do it.

What you’ll need is you will need a hanger. Beads. Some tape. Scissors. Anything with metal, and some ribbon. So the first thing we’re going to do, is we’re going to take the ribbon and we are going to cut different sizes. We just need a little bit. Start out with a little bit of ribbon. And we’re going to thread the ribbon through the washer. Or our metal object. Our key, our jewelry, whatever it is that you’re threading through. And you’re going to attach it to the end of a hanger, and tie it on. You can use jingle bells too. I think that would work well too.

Okay. So just like so. And I think if you do as many things as possible, it might be super fun because you get all these different images. I like to add in the butterfly. Or a thing that’s a dream because it inspires me. And, you know, you could even have a chime of all inspiring words. That could be fun too. So I take the key, thread it through. You might want to do different lengths. One shorter, one longer. One shorter, one longer. Just for texture.

You’re going to want to continue all the way down the hanger. And once you’re done, you’re going to have a beautiful wind chime. And I like to sing little bit of lullabies to. Jonny. We’re going to sing a lullaby with our pretty chimes.

Hush little baby don’t say a word. Mamma’s going to buy you a mocking bird.

Today we’re making musical instruments out of household items. We’re going to make a Buzzing Machine. Sounds like fun. We’re going to need a pair of scissors, an index card. A colored index card will work too. Some stickers if you want to decorate the index card. A rubber band, a broken pencil, or you can break it yourself, a couple of erasers, a stapler and some yarn.

The first thing we’re going to do is take our index card and we’re going to cut it into a square. If you want to decorate the index card and like to do that it’s kind of fun. After we’ve decorated it we’re going to take our pencil and we’re going to take the erasers and put it on either side of the pencil. Once we get the erasers securely onto the pencil then we’re going to cut a piece of yarn, maybe string, yarn. A few feet, one foot, should be enough. Cut the yarn. Once we’ve cut the yarn I’m going to attach the yarn, make a knot onto one side of the pencil. I’m going to take it and I’m going to make a knot. We’re going to staple the pencil to the index card. So you’re going to open your stapler. It might take you a few times to actually get it. Now that we have our buzzy thing stapled we’re going to take a rubber band and we’re going to put it lengthwise around the pencil like so. There we go. And, that’s a cool buzzy thing.

Aly Sunshine: Today we’re making plastic bowl tambourines. What you’ll need: some ribbon, a hole puncher, a pair of scissors, some washers, and some jingle bells. What you’re going to do first is you’re going to take your plastic bowl or paper bowl of your choice, and you’re going to take the hole puncher and you’re going to place the hole puncher around the edge of the tambourine. You can do it around the whole side like this, so there’s holes on every side. Circle all the way around like so. Next we’re going to take our ribbon and our scissors and cut a few inches off of the ribbon, like so. So we’re going to tread a few of our washers through the ribbon. And I’m also going to add a few jingle bells. These might be a little bit harder to thread. So once we have some washers and jingle bells on the tambourine, we’re going to take the outside of the bowl that we punched, and we’re going to thread the ribbon through, like so. Now, you don’t want to tie it too tight, because you want to still have that jangly sound. So tie it sort of loosely. Leave a little bit of room here. And we’re going to tie it. So you’re going to repeat those steps for all the other holes that you punched all the way around. You’re going to thread the jingle bells and the washers all the way around like so. I’m going to call my good friend Johnny Wheels to play some jingle bells with me. Johnny.

Johnny Wheels: Hey, Aly.

Aly: Hey, Johnny. Jingle Bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride on a one-horse open sleigh. Hey.

We’re discussing how to make household items into musical instruments. Today we’re going to make some container shakers.

This is one of my favorites because it’s super easy, it’s fun and your kids will love it and they get a chance to look what’s inside your cabinets and see what you can make into a musical instrument. So what you’re going to need is, you’re going to need anything around the house that’s food that might make a shaking sound. So some beans. I have some lentils. I have some rice. You can also use popcorn, macaroni, anything that makes a sound. Then you’re going to need different size of shakers so I got a soup container here, I have a tin can and an old glass jar.

So step one is to decorate your shaker. Don’t forget to get creative. You can get stickers and some construction paper. You could all pretty glitter, whatever you want. And then step two is to experiment with different sounds. So, you know, you might want to take one piece of bean. One popping sound. You might want to add a few more. Add a little lentils. Sounds good. Little bit of rice. You could experience with what sound’s what.

So this is a plastic container. Let’s see what it sounds like with a tin container. It’s probably going to have a different sound. Yeah, it does. And you can also use straws. In this one I used some cool beads. Different colors, it’s colorful. I even put some string in it to kind of trap the sounds a little bit and that’s really easy to do. Just put two holes on either side of the container and put the string through and put some knots on each end. So this is how we make a container shaker. Take a plastic jar, wrap her in some paper, fill with rice and beans, you got yourself a shaker. Yeah.

Today we’re making instruments with household items. We’re going to make a soda bottle bass. So what you’ll need is one soda bottle, a bunch of rubber bands, some macaroni, a Popsicle stick, some scissors, some tape.

First thing we’re going to do is we are going to take the soda bottle and decorate it. I decorated mine with pretty flowers, construction paper, stickers. Finished one has some pretty dots on it. Use your imagination, let it go wild. Do whatever you want. It’s kind of fun.

So first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to get a scissor and poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle. Now this is a little bit tricky. It might not come out right away, so what you might need to do is you might need to get a hammer and nail. You might need to get a screw. Just even a pen might work. Put it in the bottom. Finally, when you have hour hole, then we are going to take the bottle, the body of the bottle, and you see I have put four holes here. We’re going to put four holes here. One, two, three, four. And then we’re going to punch with the scissor, we’re going to cut them out. You don’t want the holes to be too big and you don’t want what we’re cutting out to be too big.

So we’re going to now connect the dots and cut a square. The square should be about the size of three fingers. So if before you make the holes you want to try to do three fingers, that’ll work. So we’re going to cut a square inside the box. Okay, so now I have my square in the box. So that’s how you prepare the body of the bass, and next we’re going to show you how to string the bass.

Aly Sunshine: We’re making instruments from household items. My name is Aly Sunshine, and today we’re going to make a tom-tom drum out of an oatmeal container. You’ll need an oatmeal container or any kind of cardboard tube, some balloons, some rubber bands, a scissor, and some pencils to act like your homemade drumsticks. Step one, you’re going to decorate the tube. So I chose to make it look like a real drum, got some construction paper and some stickers, got some ribbon. I think it looks really pretty. Different sizes have different sounds, actually. And then the next thing you’re going to do is you’re take the balloon, and you’re going to cut the balloon. I need a little help putting the drum together, so I’m going to have my friend Johnny come on and help me put the balloon onto the oatmeal container. Hey, Johnny Wheels!

Johnny Wheels: Hey, Aly Sunshine.

Aly: What’s up. So this balloon matches your shirt.

Johnny: It sure does.

Aly: We’re going to put the container on like so, and we’re going to secure it with a rubber band. Go ahead. Wrap it around. Great. And then we’re going to do the same thing to the other side. We have to punch a hole through it to get the bottom out. See, so you can see through it. And on the other side we are going to take the balloon and do the same thing that we did on the first side. So let’s hold this down. Can you hold this down for me? Perfect. We’re going to wrap the balloon around the top, put the rubber band on it. Now we’re going to play these drums. What do you think? Will you using a little song? Play it out. Take your pencils, homemade drumsticks. This old man, he played one. He played knick-knack on my drum, with a knick-knack, paddy-whack, give the dog a bone. This old man came rolling home.

We’re making instruments with household items. We’re going to make a
homemade spin drum. This is one of my favorite instruments. I use this
a lot in my classes around the Chinese New Year.

So what you’ll need is you will need one Pringles container, a scissor,
a dowel, two jingle bells, a hole puncher, and some yarn. Let’s get
ready.

Okay, we’re going to take the Pringles container and we are going to cut
a hole in it, like so. Then we’re going to take our scissors and we’re
going to circle all the way around the Pringles container in a circle. All the way around. Of course, it doesn’t have to be Pringles if you have a tube that looks like this.

So we have our circle. Okay, so once we cut out our circle, we are
going to decorate our circle with construction paper, stickers, or
glitter whatever you want. So now we have this part of the spin drum.

Next, we’re going to take our circle and we are going to punch a hole in
it. I’ve already punched one hole, a big hole, and we’re going to take
our dowel and we’re going to thread it through. You might want to take
some glue and put it at the end of the dowel as well just to make sure
it’s secured in place, like so.

Next we’re going to take our hole puncher and we’re going to place holes
on both sides of the circle. There’s one. And we’re going to do the
other side. We’re going to use this to string our bells through. So on
one side, and then on the other side.

Okay, and that completes step one of how we’re going to make a spin
drum.

How to Make a Harmonica out of a Popsicle Stick https://howcast.com/videos/501421-how-to-make-a-harmonica-musical-instruments/ Mon, 18 Jun 2012 19:36:44 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/501421-how-to-make-a-harmonica-musical-instruments/

Today we’re making instruments from household items. We’re going to make a Popsicle stick harmonica.

What you will need is two Popsicle sticks. It doesn’t really matter what sizes you get. Just make sure they’re both the same. They can be long or short. I thought these were kind of cool curvy ones. You will need one thick rubber band and two thin rubber bands. One index card. And some tape and some scissors.

So part one. What we’re going to do is we’re going to take the index card and we’re going to cut them into quarter pieces. So about so. Something like that. Make a few of them. You’re going to place both Popsicle sticks on top of each other, like that.

Once they’re on top of each other, you’re going to take what you’ve cut, the index card, and you’re going to wrap it all the way around the Popsicle stick like that. And you are going to get a piece of tape and you are going to tape it together. It doesn’t really matter if the index card falls off a little bit. What matters is that eventually that it stays on the ends of each Popsicle stick. So it should look like that.

Now we’re going to do the same thing on the other side. Take the index card, wrap it all the way around, and secure it with some tape. Now we’re going to remove one of the Popsicle sticks and save it for later.

So next thing we’re going to do is we are going to take our thick rubber band and put it lengthwise around the harmonica. Make sure that the index card stays towards each end of the stick like that. Then we’re going to take the other Popsicle stick that we put aside and we’re going to stick them on top of one another.

Now we’re going to take our thinner rubber bands and on each end we’re going to tie them around. Might have to tie them three or four times, however it takes. That’s one end. We’re going to do the other end.

Okay, now we’re going to get ready to blow our wooden harmonica. And that’s how you make a harmonica out of Popsicle sticks.

Aly Sunshine: We’re going to make an oboe straw. So what you will need is you will need straws. You can get different size straws if you want. I got some bubble tea straws and some smaller straws. And you can play around with which ones work best for you. And then you’re going to need a pair of scissors. Not much required.

So the first thing you’re going to do is you’re going to take the straw, and you are flatten the straw out on the end. Flatten it as much as you can. You’re not going to get it perfectly flat, but you’ll get it flat enough. And then take the scissors, and you are going to cut each side of the straw into a point like a triangle. You’re going to flatten that out as well once you get your point. And then on the same side as you have a point, you’re going to take your scissors and punch a hole on the side on the front of the straw.

So you might want to do that with the scissors. I got it through the scissors. Maybe get a pin to secure it. Make it rounder. So you can add many different holes down the tube if you want. I am going to call up my good friend Johnny Wheels from the Funkytown Playground Band to get up and help me play this oboe straw. Johnny. Hey, Johnny Wheels.

Johnny Wheels: Hey, Allie Sunshine. Okay. So this is what you do. Cover up the holes with your finger, and you’re going to blow into the little mouthpiece that you made. And you pinch it. Sometimes it’s a little tricky. So experiment with where you pinch your mouthpiece, and blow.

Aly: And that’s how you make an oboe out of a straw.

This is part two on how to make a box guitar.

It sounds like a scary monster. So, now that we’ve decorated our box – I decorated in my funky town band poster, my favorite poster – we’re going to pick out some rubber bands. I like a little bit of a thicker rubber band, but you might want to experiment with different thicknesses and sizes. You can put the rubber bands horizontally or vertically depending on what you’re looking for. They might have different sounds, so go ahead and experiment with them.

I think your kids will have a lot of fun playing this guitar. It’s super fun. It’s playful. Kids love guitar. You can decorate your box with glitter, or a funky poster, maybe some cool newspaper, wrapping paper. Use all the options that you want.

Now that I’ve put the rubber bands on already, that sounds good, right? That sounds good, but I think that what we’re going to do is we’re going to take two pencils and use them to do bridges of the guitar. That’s going to give it a little bit more of a tighter sound. So, I’m going to stick the pencil on one side, just like that. Then I’m going to put it on the other side. If the strings get caught just make sure that they aren’t twisted.

Now we’ve got our funky town guitar. I think I want to jam out some songs on this one. What do you think, Johnny? You want to come up and play some songs?

Oh, you got a guitar there. It sounds pretty good.

Right. I’ve been working on the railroad all the live long day.

Today we are discussing how to make instruments from household items. Shake it out! The first thing we are going to make today is a bottle-cap shaker. What I did was I decorated mine with some purple construction paper, some yellow polka dots, some yellow construction paper, a little pink, and made it really pretty.

What you will need:

A wooden dowel
1 large nail
3 smaller nails
6 bottle caps
1 hammer

What we are going to do is start out with a bottle cap and the large nail. We are going to take the hammer and drill a hole inside the bottle cap; like so. We are going to do the same thing with all of the bottle caps. Then we are going to take the wooden dowel–once we have the holes in all of the bottle caps–and we’re going to take two bottle caps and we are going to put them together. They sound like little castanets. I like that.

Now we are going to put the nail inside the holes that we’ve made, and put a hole inside of the dowel. What you are going to do is put holes on every side: 1-2-3. You’re going to have 6 bottle caps on 3 sides, and it’s going to sound awesome! That is how you make a bottle cap shaker out of a wooden dowel and some bottle caps.

Today we are talking about how to make instruments with household items.

Sounds like a scary monster. We’re going to make a fast guitar. This is one of my favorites.

What you’ll need is a cardboard box. Any size. A shoe box will do. A bigger box. A tissue box. It’s up to you. The sturdier the box usually the better the sound.

You will need a pair of scissors. Four rubber bands. Different lengths and sizes are great too. You’ll need a couple of pencils and you will also need this is optional if you want to use a paper towel roll for the top of the guitar.

And now what we’re going to do is we’re going to take our scissors and we are going to punch a hole in all four corners in the square. You can do a circle if you’d like but I chose to do a square. It really doesn’t matter. And we’re just going to go ahead and cut a hole out of it.

So, step two. Once you have the hole in your box you’re going to decorate it. I decorated mine with my Funky Town posters. My band. Funky Town Playground. That’s the poster for our album.

But you can also use construction paper, and you can use a paper towel and make it like super cool stickers. Make it fun. Glittery guitars, whatever you want. The more fun, the more creative the better.

So, that’s part one and for part two we’ll teach you how to string the guitar.

My name is Ally Sunshine. We’re making instruments with household items. Today we’re going to make a kazoo out of toilet paper. So, the first thing you will need is, you’ll need a toilet paper roll, you’ll need some scissors, some wax paper, a rubber band, and some construction paper and stickers if you’d like. So, step number one: you’re going to take the toilet paper roll and some wax paper and you’re going to take the wax paper out and you’re going to trace it.

You’re also going to need a pen. You’re going to trace the wax paper. Make a large hole with it. Then you’re going to cut out the hole. Really cut a circle into the wax paper, it’s really simple. This is a super easy one that sounds really fun. So we’re going to cut a hole on the end of the wax paper into a circle. And you’re going to place it on the end of the kazoo. Now try to wrap it really securely with your hand. And then you’re going to get the rubber band and just wrap it around. Probably going to have to wrap it around two or three times to make it stay. That sounds pretty good. Finally, punch a whole in the top of the toilet paper tube like this with the scissors.

Abby: We are discussing how to make instruments with things around the house. Today we are going to be making a wrapping paper rain stick.

What you’ll need is you’ll need a wrapping paper tube or you can even use a paper towel tube. And you’ll need some balloons and some rice and beans or popcorn or anything that makes a sound.

So step one. We’re going to take the tube. I chose to use a wrapping paper tube because I though it was super pretty and they’re already decorated. This one has balloons on it. I love balloons. So step one. We’re going to take aluminum foil and we’re going to take the aluminum foil and we are going to use it as wide as the length of the stick. Yeah, like so. Then we’re going to take the tin foil and we’re going to crumple it up in our hands so it fits easily inside of the tube. We’re going to take the foil and put it inside of the tube. Put it all the way in.

Then to secure each side, we’re going to get a balloon. If you want you can cut the end of the balloon off. Otherwise it’s going to be hanging. But either way works fine. I’m going to cut this off and put the balloon on either side of the tube. So it’s nice and secure. If you get the right size balloon, it should stay.

Next you want to fill up the tube. So I have some lentils. You can use some rice, beans, macaroni, popcorn. You could even use some straws or metal. Anything that you think sounds good. So you’re going to fill it up with whatever it is that you want to fill it up with. And when you’re done filling it up, then you are going to take the other side and put the balloon on the other side to secure it. So like so. Put the balloon on.

And now we have ourselves a rain stick. And I’m going to call my friend Johnny up. Sing a little song about the rain.

Johnny: Hello everybody.

Abby: Hey Johnny Wheels.

Johnny: Hey Abby Sunshine.

Abby: [singing] It’s raining, it’s pouring. The old man is snoring.

This is part two of how to make a spin drum. Now that we have our spin drum made with the holes in it and the dowel, we are going to get some yarn and we’re going to cut the yarn about the length of the dowel. Then, we’re going to thread through holes that we put and we’re going to wrap it around the dowel like so. I’m going to do it securely. It’s going to wrap around, pull it tight, and you’re going to pull it through the other hole. Once it’s through the hole, we are going to get some jingle bells and we are going to attach the jingle bells. We’re going to take the yarn, and we’re going to slide the jingle bells through the yarn and tie it on each side. Once you have both the jingle bells on both sides of the yarn, then you can tie them and then this is what is sounds like. What you’re going to have to do is take the caps of the Pringles container, the plastic caps, and on both sides secure them. It’s going to sound like this. Now, we have a spin drum.
