How to Make a Tom-Tom Drum from an Oatmeal Container

Transcript

Aly Sunshine: We’re making instruments from household items. My name is Aly Sunshine, and today we’re going to make a tom-tom drum out of an oatmeal container. You’ll need an oatmeal container or any kind of cardboard tube, some balloons, some rubber bands, a scissor, and some pencils to act like your homemade drumsticks. Step one, you’re going to decorate the tube. So I chose to make it look like a real drum, got some construction paper and some stickers, got some ribbon. I think it looks really pretty. Different sizes have different sounds, actually. And then the next thing you’re going to do is you’re take the balloon, and you’re going to cut the balloon. I need a little help putting the drum together, so I’m going to have my friend Johnny come on and help me put the balloon onto the oatmeal container. Hey, Johnny Wheels!

Johnny Wheels: Hey, Aly Sunshine.

Aly: What’s up. So this balloon matches your shirt.

Johnny: It sure does.

Aly: We’re going to put the container on like so, and we’re going to secure it with a rubber band. Go ahead. Wrap it around. Great. And then we’re going to do the same thing to the other side. We have to punch a hole through it to get the bottom out. See, so you can see through it. And on the other side we are going to take the balloon and do the same thing that we did on the first side. So let’s hold this down. Can you hold this down for me? Perfect. We’re going to wrap the balloon around the top, put the rubber band on it. Now we’re going to play these drums. What do you think? Will you using a little song? Play it out. Take your pencils, homemade drumsticks. This old man, he played one. He played knick-knack on my drum, with a knick-knack, paddy-whack, give the dog a bone. This old man came rolling home.
