How to Make an Origami Bookmark

Transcript

This is a video for an origami bookmark. The first step for the origami bookmark is we’re going to start with a sheet of paper with the color on top, and what we’re going to do is we’re going to make a diagonal fold. So go ahead and take one corner and bring it all the way up to the other. Make sure that it’s right on top, so that it’s not off to the side one way or the other, but right there. Go ahead and hold it in place, slide your finger on your other hand down, and then hold it in place with your thumb, slide out to the edge, and then slide out to the other edge. That should give you some really nice sharp corners.

Open that back up and then we’ll do the other side. Take the bottom all the way up to the top for the other diagonal. Open that up, flip it over, and now we’re going to do two book folds. So the book fold, the bottom edge is going to go all the way up to the top, again, try and make it as precise as you can, hold it in place and then squish it down on the bottom. Open it back up and then do the other one as well. So we’re going to have both of the book folds, squish that down.

Now this last book fold go ahead and leave that in place, and you’re going to put your fingers right up on top, near the top of the corners of the paper. What we’re going to do is we’re going to put all four corners of the paper together at the same spot right at the top. We’re going to fold that down and that’s going to make what’s called a square base, and the square base doesn’t use any new folds. It’s just using all of the creases that we already have. It’s just re-positioning them.

So go ahead and lock that down. You want two flaps on each side, so that you have its equal on both sides. And now we’re going to take one flap of paper, there are a bunch of flaps here at the top. Go ahead and just take the top flap and what we’re going to do is we’re going to rotate it and put it inside the paper. You see how I’m not folding it down over the top. I’m actually folding it back the other direction, back inside the model and just push it all the way up, until it gets as high up into the model as you can, and then squish it flat just like that.

And we do that on the front and then also on the back, so go ahead and take the next sheet, rotate it back, and put it all the way underneath, pushing it up as far as it’ll go and then squishing it down. Then go ahead and find whatever you’re working on or whatever you’re reading and the squarish corner and then this right here is the origami bookmark. It’ll slide and it’ll fit right there on top and it’ll hold your place, wherever you are; the origami bookmark.
