Hi. My name is Jess Tice-Gilbert and I’m a paper engineer. I work with Matthew Reinhart in Manhattan and I also teach at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. I literally fell into pop-ups by accident. I took a class in college and fell in love with it. I’ve been making pop-ups ever since.
There is a little bit of math involved, which I love. I’m a little bit of a geometry nerd, not gonna lie. You also need to problem solve at the same time. And the wonder and the surprise that comes from pop-ups. Like, you can have the smallest card and once you open it, you get this surprise, this thing that just pops out at you. And I also really love that it brings a lot of people joy, like, seeing people’s faces light up after opening a pop-up card or a pop-up book and them just being like, wow, that’s awesome. That is another reason why I love pop-ups.
A lot of people will think, oh, I can’t make pop-ups. It’s too hands on. It’s too complicated. But I’m able to show them step by step that they can. Making pop-ups is my passion and I want to share it with you. I make pop-ups. End of story.
