Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York.

The palette knife is a great tool to use in painting with acrylics. They come in a lot of different sizes and shapes, you can find them in your craft store. I like this particular one, it’s one of my favorite knives, it’s got a long edge and then it has a short edge here and I can use if for a lot of different applications. I love to do paintings of flowers with my palette knife because I can a lot of different size petals with this particular one.

This one is mainly used for blending paint so you might want to save one of these little guys and have one of these in your tool kit just for blending colors. If you’re planning on using the palette knife and you’re blending your colors, make sure that you use a flat palette because you have to be able to pick the paint up with the knife.

So, let’s see, we have some other little knives here. This is a very small, little knife and this one can be used for small details in landscapes and florals and in still lifes.

What I’d like to show you a little bit about, is how we pick up the paint with the palette knife and how we apply it to the canvas, especially in this case, with the tree trunk. I’ll use the green on top of the brown just so that you can see it. And the way that I’m going to do this, is I’m scraping through the paint and I’m picking the paint up on the bottom side of the knife. I’m right handed so I use the knife this way and I apply pressure from the right. So the paint is on the bottom half of the knife and as I come to the canvas, I just scrape across and you can see how the paint is coming off onto the canvas and the branches.

If I want to build some grass and some more texture on the bottom of the canvas, I’m going to put a layer of grass coming across the bottom here. This gives me a really, different creative form of a landscape. It’s not just painted on, it’s almost just laid on top of the canvas. I’m going to use the short end of the palette knife this time to give myself some little blades of grass coming up and I’m just going to scrape up and those are some basic techniques for using a palette knife.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Acrylic paint is pigment in a suspension of acrylic polymers. It’s water based so it’s very user friendly. They’re very different than oils in that the water is the medium. With oils you have to use a turpentine or a paint thinner to wash your brushes and to thin the paint. You can mix water with acrylic to make it behave like a water color. All you have to do is mix more water in with your paint and use them in a thin application. You can also mix a product called a gel in with your acrylics and that makes it heavier and it almost looks and acts more like an oil painting. Acrylic paints are a great way to get started painting. They’re affordable, they’re easy to use, they dry quickly. So go to your craft store, grab some paints, and get started.

So we’ve decided to give acrylic painting a try. The first thing you are going to want to do is to get a canvas or a surface to work on. There are many different choices in the canvases that you can pick up at your local craft store. They’re already prepared too, so you don’t have to do anything, you just get started. A good alternative is a Masonite board, which you can get at your local hardware store, and you can have these cut into different sizes. Most importantly, you do want to prime this before you get started. The next thing you would want to do is choose your brushes. Make sure you choose brushes that are appropriate to the size canvass that you are using. This is a one inch shader brush or flat brush. We also have a half-inch flat brush or shader. An important brush to have in your collection is a filbert brush. This one’s got a rounded edge, a rounded top. And, we also will choose a liner brush, these are for small details. And that’s the brushes you need to get started with. The next thing you need to choose is a palate. I’ve chosen a very flat, large palate. I like this one because you can mix a lot of colors on it. You can also use a smaller palate that has wells in it to keep your colors separated. You’ll also need to choose some acrylic paint. There are many different colors and brands and bodies to choose from when you get to this craft store, so it might be kind of confusing. If you’ll just grab the colors that you really like, that is going to be a good place to start. You’ll also need a few basic supplies to get you started. You’ll need a cup of water, and this water is what you’re going to use to thin your paint and clean your brushes. Also grab a paper towel or a cloth. These are just small cloths that we’ve cut up. We’re going to throw these away later. And that’s all we need to get started on our acrylic painting.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Back in the olden days, the artists used to make their own canvasses. They would have to prepare a frame, a wooden frame. They’d have to buy a canvas, and they would have to stretch it over and around the canvas. They actually nailed into into the back of the stretcher bar. They also had to prime their own canvasses. They had to make the gesso, or the primer. Nowadays, you can go to the art store and buy canvasses ready for you to use in many different sizes. There are also a couple of different examples of this type of canvas that’s got a deeper profile, and these canvasses are typically used without a frame, you just paint over the edges of the canvas and hang it on the wall. However, if you’d like to go through the process and learn how to stretch a canvas, you can also buy the parts and pieces needed. If you don’t want to go through all that trouble, then go to your craft store and buy a canvas of any shapes and sizes, and get started right away.

When it comes to selecting brushes for your project, there are so many things to choose from. We’re going to select a few for our work today. Today we’re going to use a 2-inch chip brush. This one is good for a lot of coverage on your canvas. You can cover your canvas fairly quickly with a brush this size. We’re also going to use a round brush for some detail work. And we’re going to use a filbert brush, and the filbert’s got a round edge. This is good for circular shapes, and for flowers, trees – all types of different things.

I’m going to start by using the 2-inch chip brush. And what I’m going to do is put a lot of paint on this brush. I’m using blue, and I’m also going to put some white in this. This is going to be my sky area. As you can see, this brush covers a lot of area very quickly. I’m going to put some more white in so that it’s got some lightness as it gets towards the horizon line. So there, I have just created an entire sky with one brush.

The next brush I’d like to use is my round brush. And I’m going to create a tree with this brush. I’m going to use some brown paint and I’m going to load it up fairly heavily. I’m going to start, and pull it up all the way into the sky area. Let these branches split off and just go in all different directions with this brush. Okay, make some roots at the base of the tree.

The next brush we’re going to use is the filbert brush, and this one has a rounded edge on it. I’m going to use this brush to form the green part of the tree. I’m loading it up with a lot of paint and I’m just going to start dabbing in areas where the green part of the tree will be. And I’m just using a very heavy dabbing motion and going over where the branches and leaves of the trees will be. So the filbert brush does a great job of depicting tree leaves. We can also use it for shading on still lives.

How to Paint with Acrylic Paint:

Acrylic Painting Techniques

We’re going to talk about some painting techniques. Let’s start with putting our paint out on our palette. Basically, all you have to do is take your paint, squeeze it out of your bottle or your tube onto your palette. Separate the colors with a little bit of space so that you’ll have room to blend in between your colors. I also like to set them out sort of like they appear on the color wheel. And just start with a small amount of paint, each color.

The next thing we’re going to talk about is how to load your brushes and how to apply the paint to the canvas. I’m going to start by using a 1/2 inch flat brush. These are great for mixing colors with. I’m going to take some of my red paint and blend it into my yellow paint to come up with an orange shade. Make sure that you get a quite a good amount of paint into your brush depending on the technique and the subject that your going to be working on. You simply take the brush and you press into the canvas. Going back and forth will spread the paint and it will also fill in all the little pieces and parts of the canvas.

The next brush I’d like to demonstrate is the liner brush. This brush is used to get a lot of details in your subject. So you’re just going to take your brush and you’re going to load it up with the paint. If you use a very heavy pressure, it will give you a very wide line because the bristles splay out. If you use a very light pressure and stay on the tip of the brush, you’ll get a very thin and delicate line.

Another brush I’d like to tell you about is the 1 inch flat brush. This brush is good for covering large spaces. You can mix a little bit of water with your paint and your paint will go further. That way you can cover large areas very quickly.

You can go to the store and get all types of easels. You can get standing easels. You can get table easels as well. I prefer to use a small table easel and these take up very little space. And I can take them with me anywhere I go.

I also like to keep my palette very close to my painting. That way I can reach it very easily. I can replenish the colors anytime I want to.

And those are just some basic techniques for setting up your workstation.

When you buy your acrylic paints you may want initially to spend some time just getting to know how they work together, how they blend, and how much paint takes to make a secondary color.

The primary colors are Yellow, Red and Blue, and you cant mix anything together and you’ve got to start whit these.

So let’s start whit the yellow, and what we gonna do is mix yellow and red together and that will give us some orange.

And I am just gona dip a little bit into the yellow, and bringing it to the other wells, and Im gona take a little bit of red, now the red is usually a lot stronger than the yellow, so I am just gona start whit a little bit of red to make the orange, and those to colors together make me an orange shade.

I’ll go ahead and put it right here, and lets put a reference of red onto our canvas too.

So coming out around well take some of our red and will put int into another well and then i’m gona mix some blue into it, this will make purple.

When you’re mixing you’re colors whatever you’re working on is far as your subject matter just make sure that you mix enough paint so that you can get trough your project without having to remix, because sometimes the colors come out differently when you start over again.

Here is my purple, and then we’ll put a reference of blue on here as well.

So i’m gona take a little bit of yellow and put into the well here , and taking some of the blue and mixing it into the yellow, and that gives us green!

So now we have formed our Primary colors Yellow Red and Blue, and our secondary colors which are orange green and purple. And thats how you mix your paint!

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I’m going to show you a few little techniques that you can use when you want to do like a water-color wash. We’re going to build from transparent to opaque in this demonstration. So what I want to start with is just a basic wash of water on the canvas. And I’m going to use my acrylic paint on here in almost the same technique that we use with water colors. I’m going to start with some blue. And what I’m going to do is just paint the blue into the sky and you can see that it starts thinning out really quickly. As you can see, the paint is very transparent as it mixes with the water. So if I want more blue on my canvas, I’m going to use my brush without any water in it at all. And it has dried a little bit so it should stick to it, okay. So we’re just going to continue to add these layers. You can see the intensity of the colors getting stronger and stronger. So if we want to add some grass, we’re going to use a green. And it’s a transparent green. Go ahead and put it down here. You can see how thin it is, you can almost see the blue through this green. Now to make this green a little bit stronger and less transparent, we’re going to add some gesso to the green. It’s a medium and it’s a filler. It’s made with acrylic, which is a plastic and this is what we use to give our paint body and it also controls the opacity. So I’ve got my little section of green here and I’m mixing it down with the gesso. And you can also see that it’s hard to get the color intense and bright, so we’re just going to mix it to a medium green. Then I’m going to add this to our painting. This makes it much heavier and less transparent. And that’s how we control opacity and brightness.

How to Paint with Acrylic Paint: Keeping Acrylic Paint from Drying too Fast

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Acrylic paints typically dry very quickly. That’s a good advantage because you can work a lot on one particular painting in a short amount of time. However, if you don’t want your paint to be drying out you can use a couple of different methods to keep your paint fresh. One thing that you can use while you’re painting if your paints start to get a little film on the top of them you may want to spray them with a spray bottle with water in it. And you just take a small bottle and you just sprits the top of it and it keeps the paint from drying out too quickly as you’re working. Another way to do this is to use a slow drying medium that you can buy at the craft store. And what you want to do is take this medium and mix a few drops in with your paint. It’s a very kind of milky looking liquid. And what I’m going to do is just take a little bit of my red and blend it in with this medium. It also makes the paint quite a bit more fluid and makes it last a lot longer. Gives you much more open time with the paint. So it acts more like an oil painting in that case. So those are two methods of keeping your paint fresh and keeping them from drying out too quickly. Another good tips is that if you’re mixing a color and you want to remember what that color is try to keep a little piece of the color on the back that way when you go back to mix your color you’ll have something to refer to.

I want to show you some fun ways to paint with acrylic without using brushes. These tools can be so much fun. You just have to kinda know how to use them. So I’m going to use my palette knife. I’m going to use a sponge and I’m going to use one other tool, but I’ll show you in a minute what we are gonna do there.

So the first thing I wanna do is take my palette knife and just scraping it through this green paint and I’m going to make the stem of the flower and may be a couple of leaves. So I’m just pressing it into the canvas and then I’m gonna come up and make a couple of leaves.

Next thing I wanna do is take my sponge, it’s a little bit wet, so I’m gonna squeeze it out. I’m gonna use some of these orange paint and I’m gonna do the top of the flower. Let’s put a little bit of yellow in the center here.
And the third object we use to paint with is the top of this paint. So I’m just gonna unscrew this top and I’m gonna dip it in my white paint, give it a little twirl and give my flower a center and that’s how you paint without using brushes.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Hardboard is a great surface to paint on as well. And it comes in a lot of different shapes and sizes. These are some that we picked up at the craft store. This one is built like a box. It’s made out of hardwood and it’s primed so you can actually paint on the surface. The good thing about this one is that you can go ahead and paint the edges and just hang it on your wall as it is. You don’t have to frame these. They’re great for small works of art; maybe a little collage; or something that’s very simple. Another option is a hardboard panel. This one has also been primed, but you can see the back of it. It’s a masonite board that’s just been cut to size. This is also a great way to save a little money if you’re getting started because you can cut these, have them on hand, and just play with your acrylic paints. The surface is very smooth. It’s very different than working on a canvas. I’m going to show you just a little bit of painting on top of this hardboard. This is just a mixture of phtalo blue and white. And I’m just doing a very quick background stroke. And you can see that it covers very well. And the paint will dry similar to the way it dries on a canvas. And you can go over the paint time and time again and build your layers. As you can see, the hardboard is a very smooth surface. The paint glides over it very easily. The drying time is roughly the same as with a canvas, so you can paint a layer, let it dry, and then come back to it. And those are some of the benefits of painting on hardboard.

How to Paint with Acrylic Paint: Painting a Simple Background

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I want to show you how to do a simple background. Now sometimes it’s hard to get the background down just because the colors of the paint that we’re using they will leave streaks and strokes where the brushes have gone. So I’m going to try to help explain a little bit about how to do that and get a nice solid background. Then we might take it a step further and do something fun with it. So I’m going to start off with this red paint. I’m using a very large brush and I’m just going to get the paint onto the canvas first. So the key to using the big brush is that you can get the paint down quickly without it drying and then we can work on the brush strokes with a different brush. I’m just going to take my brush and go across. I’m not pushing very hard. I’m just touching it very lightly with the ends of the brush so that the paint is smoothing out. So that’s your simple background. If you want to take it another step further, you can add more color just to give it a little bit more interest. And I’m going to take some white paint and I’m going to blend it into this red that’s wet and it’s going to start turning a really nice pink color. I’m just going to work the paint back and forth to give it a modeled background. Going to make this really smooth and blended. I’m going to wipe the paint that’s on my brush onto my paper towel here. And this is a little bit warmer. It’s like an orange red. I’m going to add that into the canvas in this top corner. Once again if I want to lighten it I can add a little bit of white. And then that gives me another tone of red. I’m just going to continue to work myself my way around the canvas here blending these paints together and smoothing them out. And that’s one way to spice up your solid background.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I’m going to show you how to do a mottled background; I have two techniques to show you. We’re going to start with a flat brush and we’re going to use two or three different colors of paint. To get started we’re going to take some of the turquoise paint and apply it to the canvas without washing our brush we’ll go to another color, I’m going to pick up the light blue, I’m going to just strike it into the turquoise paint without blending it. So that you can see a difference in the two colors I’m also going to pick up some dark blue again without washing my brush and I’m just going to strike it to the background. I’ll go back and forth in between all three colors until my area is covered. Now that’s one technique for a mottled background. I’m going to show you another one on the other half of the canvas, I’m going to start with the turquoise paint, I’m going to paint a section with the turquoise. I’m going to go to the light blue and put it right next to the turquoise, I’m going to take a small amount of the dark blue and I’m going to put it right next to both of these colors. And the next thing I’m going to do, so I’m going to take this soft mop brush, and I’m going to use this to soften the colors in the lines in between the colors. And you’re just going to lightly brush over this colors until it gives you a very soft effect. Just keep brushing until the colors blend softly together. And that’s how we do a mottled background with Acrylic paint.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. We going to demonstrate perspective by adding a small road to our painting. And we’re going to show how the road disappears at the vanishing point. What you want to do is make sure that you establish a point where the road is going to go out of the painting. I’m going to choose this little spot right here. And I’ll just put a mark there so you can see it. I also want to make sure that the road has a place where it enters into the painting. I’m going to bring it about right here so that it clears the root of the tree. So, I’m going to make it very narrow towards the end of the painting where it vanishes out of sight. So, that’s going to be the narrowest point. I’m going to draw the line. This is the top line of the road. And then the bottom line of the road is here and it’s going to get thicker and thicker as it comes towards us. As I fill it in you’ll be able to see the perspective better. Now, we’re going to add another element that will explain perspective a little bit better, as well. We’re going to put a small fence going beside the road and out of our vision. So, what I’d like to do is take some of my brown paint and I’m gonna start the little fence about right here. And I’m going to put one of the post in right here. Now, as the fence gets further away from us the post will get shorter and also they will appear to be closer together. So, our next post is going to be a little bit shorter than the first. Our next one will be even shorter. And then they start to get closer and closer together. We’ll also put the rails on it and what I want to do is just make the line go equal distant from one line to the next all the way back. I’m going to let it just trail off and look almost like there’s nothing there. That makes it look like that it’s getting smaller and smaller towards the background. I’ll put another one here. And those are some basic principles of perspective.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I’m going to tell you about some brush techniques today. We’re going to use our 1-inch flat brush and we’re going to do a cross-hatch technique. We’re going to use two different colors of paint; I’ll be using yellow and white. Starting with my yellow, I’m just going to start make these X-patterns, and come across the canvas with your X-pattern. I’m also going to go to my white paint without washing my brush and put that into the yellow and I’m using the same X-pattern and you’ll be able to see both colors of paint and they’re just slightly blended on the canvas. And the next technique we’ll be doing is a dry brush technique. To do a dry brush technique you first have to start with a small amount of paint on your brush and the idea is to use the paint and draw it out until there’s nothing on the brush and then you get a variegated line with your brush. I’ll do it again for you. This brush is loaded with a small amount of paint and then I’m just going to drag in up until the paint ends, all the way. This works really well when you’re trying to layer you’re paint and get different techniques of shadowing and light. The next thing I’d like to show you is a liner brush. We use this for our details. So, I’m going to use the red paint to show you how I can do some small details with this liner brush. You can use this brush to create stems for flowers, or to make a tree. All you have to do is use a really light touch and let the branches get smaller and smaller as they come away from the trunk. The next brush technique I would like to show you is one that we use for an abstract flower. This is a filbert brush and what we’re going to do is we’re just going to take this brush and do a dabbing technique. I’m loading it up fairly heavily with the paint. And what I want to do is I’m just going to press it into the canvas and make the petals of the flower. And that gives you an abstract flower. And those are our brush techniques.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I am going to show you how to create texture and blend it. We are going to do blending by creating a sky with very smooth texture. We are going to also add a tree. We are going to use a pallet knife to give us some rough texture and we will use a sponge for the foliage of the tree to give us a different texture. Let’s start with our 1-inch flat brush. We are going to put our blue paint at the top of the canvas and we are going to let it lighter and lighter as we come to the bottom of the canvas and we are going to go straight to my white paint without washing my brush and I am going to blend the 2 colors together and what I am doing is just going back and forth between the colors so that I get a nice medium blue and I am going to continue to take this color down the rest of the canvas. The next thing I would like to demonstrate is how to get a rough texture using a pallet knife. I am going to load it up with a paint on the inside edge. I am just going to take the pallet knife and touch the canvas and pull just slightly. I am going to give it a little root. Now, I am going to do the branches of the tree. I am going to go ahead and start splitting the branches off the main trunk, the branches get thinner as they go out and away from the tree trunk. The next thing I would like to do is show you some texture with some sponge work, so I am going to use these natural sponges, you can get a variety of sponges at the craft store or you can either get the natural sponges, they also make synthetic sponges. I usually get the big sponge and I cut it in smaller pieces, it is easier to work with this way. I also have 2 colors of green on my pallet. I am going to start with the darker green and then I am just going to come to the outside edges and put my tree in and then the next step is to add some highlights. Once again, I am not going to wash my sponge. I am just going to go straight to the next color. I am using a citron green, which is sort of a yellowish green and I am just going to dab on the top edges of each of these branches and groups of leaves and those are the basic techniques of texturing and blending.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Now we are going to show you how to form shadows and highlights and we have prepared a basic apple shape to work with, We’ve got our acrylic paint in the red and it’s very flat. This paint is still very wet and workable I want it to appear as if the light is coming from the upper left hands corner. In order to form our shadows we are going to choose a complimentary color to red which is green and that will give us a really natural shadow color without being dull. So what I’m going to do is load up my brush with the green. This is a very dark green paint and I’m just going to start on this lower section of the apple and bring it up in to the red. I’m going to let it gradually get lighter and lighter as I come around the apple. This also gives it dimension it makes the apple like it’s got the round cylindrical shape Making it darkest at the bottom and as you slide it becomes lighter and lighter moving around. So I’m going to pick up my one quarter inch flat brush. I’m going use some more of the red paint a little higher. So I am going to make it brighter and little bit of white makes it lighter. This will be my highlighter color.

We are going to put the highlight color on the upper left. You don’t need much it’s just going to put a little bit on here at the end. This is sort of in a circular motion following the shape of the apple and that’s how we do basic highlights with acrylic paint.

How to Paint with Acrylic Paint: Sponge Painting

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I’m going to teach you some techniques using a sponge today. This is a basic natural sponge. They come out of the sea. They’re usually bigger when you get them at the store so you might have to cut them with some scissors and use the one that you like the best. We’re going to do two different techniques. One of them we’ve already prepared the canvas. This is a dry red that we’ve just put on the canvas and we’ll be sponging on top of this particular color. I’m going to start out with my sponge. Put him in the water and squeeze him out so that he is pliable. Sometimes these sponges can be very hard so you want to make sure that they’re pliable and you can work with them. So squeeze the water out really good and find the favorite spot which is right there. I like that spot so that’s what I’m going to use. I’m going to start with this medium green color and I’m just going to dab all over this half of the canvas. And I’m using quite a lot of paint. I just keep going back to my pallet, picking up more painting and pressing it into the canvas. The next thing I want to do is take a different color. I’d like to put some blue in with this one. So I’m going to use my blue which is right here. So I’m just pressing this blue right into the wet green paint and I’m just moving around the canvas trying to fill all the white spots. You may also want to twist your sponge around a little bit as you go around the canvas just because you don’t want it to look like a stamped object that’s got the repetitive stamping on it. So that is a simple two color sponge technique. Let’s put this little guy aside and I’m going to grab another one of my little sponges. Make sure he’s wet. Squeeze him out really good. Let’s just mix a little bit of red with white so that it’s more of a pink tone. I want it to sort of be a medium pink. So I’m going to take the sponge that’s loaded up and again we’re just going to press it onto this dry paint. And I’m going to move around, twisting my sponge. You can kind of see that there’s different colors. There’s pink and then there’s also a little bit of white in there that gives it some added interest. And that’s how we do two sponge techniques on a background.

How to Glaze Your Acrylic Paint Work https://howcast.com/videos/497825-how-to-glaze-your-work-acrylic-painting/ Thu, 17 Nov 2011 19:40:08 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/497825-how-to-glaze-your-work-acrylic-painting/

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. What glazing is basically layering one color on top of another to cause an effect. We water the paint down and then we use on top of dried paint to make a shadow or just to create depth in the painting. Sometimes people like to use this technique when they are doing a round object, or a 3d object just to give it shadowing and a little bit of depth. So what i’m going to do is we’ve prepared the canvas here This is just basic yellow paint and it has dried. I’m going to show you three different colors of glazes to show you what it does on the yellow primed canvas. So lets start with blue. What i’m doing is taking my blue paint and i’m watering down. Just right here on my palette i’m just watering it down with a few drops of water and then i’m going to take it and just go across the paint here and you can see what happens, you can see the yellow shining through of the paint. I’ll paint a little further so you can see the difference. Next i’ll show what red looks like on top of the yellow again i’m going to take the paint. I’m going to water it down on the palette. You can always go back over these glazes and layering them or stack them once they dry you can continue to glaze on top and get different effects. Now i’m going to take a little bit of this, take it on top of the yellow and we’ll get an orange to. So you can see the difference here, this is very red and this is goes to orange. Do another color, lets try purple this time and see what happens with the purple. Purple here we’re going to add a little bit. We’re going to take the purple over to the yellow. Since purple and yellow are complimentary colors the resulting color is probably going to be very gray or dull and that is a demonstration of some basic glazing techniques.

I’m going to teach you how to make an abstract flower. We’re going to use our one inch flat brush to get started and some red paint. This is sort of a dabbing technique. We’re going to load the brush up with quite a bit of red paint, and then I’m just going to take the brush and push it into the canvas, and it makes a flower shape. The next one I’d like to show you is more of a rose shape. Once again I’m going to load up the brush, and I’m just going to do several little circular motions to form a rose. I’m going to use my half inch flat brush, and we’re going to give a center to this little guy right here with the yellow paint, and we’re just going to take a glob of yellow paint, and we’re just going to set it right in the center here. Doesn’t have to be perfectly round. I’m also going to show you how to do the stems and some blades of grass or some of the blades that grow up around the flowers. We’ll use red paint. I’m going to take the brush, and I’m going to lay it flat on the canvas, and as I pull up I’m going to twist it to a point and then lift up on the pressure of the brush, and it gives me a really nice blade of grass, or it also looks like the little blades that grow up around the flowers. I’m going to use another brush here and show you how to make a stem. This is a round liner brush. I’m going to use the red paint, and I’m just going to start at the center of the flower with a lot of pressure and pull down and do the same thing for this one and just pull down. And that’s how we make abstract flowers.I wasn’t sure if I should start with her introduction that occurs before the title “”How to Make Abstract Flowers”” on the video. The example did not have an intro…he just started immediately after the title. So I included it since I was uncertain. Thanks for a well paying hit.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York.
We’re going to paint a tulip with acrylic paint. We’re going to start by using a one-inch flat brush. I’m going to use yellow paint and some red paint for shadowing and a little bit of green for the stems. Let’s start with the yellow. So I’m going to draw a cup shape first. I’m filling in the entire cup shape and I’m going to make the upper edge uneven, because the petals of the tulip are very uneven. I’m going to use the half-inch flat brush to do the stem of the flower now. I’m going to take some green paint‚Ķ I’m going to mix a little bit of yellow in it because I don’t want it to be quite that dark. And I’m going to use the narrow edge of the half-inch shader to for the stem. Starting at the center of the flower, I’m going to use medium pressure and I’m just going to pull straight down. Using the same green paint, I’m going to start with the brush very flat and I’ll twist it as I go up. So starting very flat and then I’m going to twist the brush to form the blade. I’m going to do it one more time on the other side. Starting with the brush flat against the canvas and then I’m twisting to form the blade. The next thing I’d like to do is put some shadow work on the tulip. So, I’m going to grab my one-half-inch flat brush. I’m going to load it up with some of this red paint and I’m going to form the inside edge of the tulip to give it some dimension. I’m just going to take the brush and pull up from the outside petal, and it makes it look like there is a petal on the inside and the outside. I’m also going to take some of the same color, the red with the orange, and I’m going to form a shadow on the bottom edge. I’m just going to blend this in with the yellow. I’m not going to go all the way around; I just want it to have a shadow on the outside edge and the bottom edge. If I just take my brush and pull down with the red, you can see where the petals start to separate. Another thing I like to do with my tulips is to put some highlights on the outside edges of the tulip petals. I do that by taking some white paint, again using the same half-inch brush, and I’m just going to put a little bit of an edge, a little tip on the outside edges of the petals. I can pull a little bit down through the body of the flower as well. And that’s your basic tulip technique.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. The first thing we want to do is establish our horizon line. I am gonna start with my purple paint and i’m using a 1 inch flat brush and i’m just gonna put a soft wavy line going across the canvas and next i’m gonna put the sky in, using some blue and some white. This is phthalo blue and i’m gonna put the darkest blue at the top of the canvas that’s closest to us , were gonna fade down to white as it gets towards the horizon line, that makes the sky look like its receding and going backwards. So this is the blue , the phthalo blue i’m gonna empty my brush out onto the canvas and this will serve as a mixing surface , i’m gonna pickup some white with my brush without washing it cause i want the blue to blend into the white and i’m gonna take the white right up into this blue and it gives me a beautiful sky color. Working the two colors back and forth together with a soft running motion. So i get towards the top of the mountains, i’m just gonna try to match the top line of the mountains with my brush stroke one up and down to give it an uneven horizon line. Now were gonna do the ground portion of the landscape and its kind of the opposite approach where you can have the lightest colors towards the horizon line and then your gonna have more color saturation, as you get towards the bottom of the canvas which is actually visually closer to us. I’m gonna start with a yellow ochre color and i’m gonna come right bellow our little mountain line, i’m gonna add a little bit of white in the background so that its a little bit faded out and I think i’l put a little bit of green in there too and this green is gonna be in the very foreground. I’m still blending the colors together you’ll have sort of a brownish tone in there which is good for landscape , the next thing i’d like to do is demonstrate a tree and were going to start with the 1 half inch flat brush , i’m gonna use the brown paint , i’m gonna start with the brush very flat and just pull up and as i get up, i’m gonna kind of twist it just a little bit so the tree trunk can get narrower, narrow as we go up , next i’m gonna add some roots and some branches, the next thing i’d like to demonstrate is the leaves of the tree , starting with some green paint in just a tapping motion and i’m also gonna add some lighter green paint on top to give it a little bit more dimension and those are some basic landscape tips.

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. I’d like to show you how to paint a sky with clouds, in acrylic paint. We’re going to start by using a two-inch chip brush. We’re going to put the sky in with this brush. We’re going to start with a basic medium blue color, and the top part of the sky is going to be the darkest blue. I’m using very flat, straight strokes going across the sky, and I’m going to bring a little bit of the color down towards the horizon line. I’ve loaded up fairly heavily with the white paint, and I’m now going to go from the horizon line up, and I’m going to blend the white into the blue. You can use quite a lot of paint with this technique so that the colors get a nice blend and you want to cover all the canvas. I’m just brushing it very lightly, so that the streaks go straight across. We’re going to use this one-inch chip, and we like this brush because it is very rough, and this is what gives us our light, airy clouds. We’re going to load it up with some white paint. I’m just trying to keep it on the very tips of the brush, and what I’m going to do is just I’m going to start by tapping into this wet blue paint, and clouds are very random shapes, so you’ve got to kind of go with your imagination, and let the cloud have many different shapes. So, we’re going to take a little bit more white paint, and I’m going to do another layer of clouds on top of this layer, and you can soften the bottom of the cloud by just barely whisping the brush over the bottom of the cloud, and it kind of gives it the look that the wind is kind of blowing through the clouds. Now, as we get further down towards the horizon line you want your clouds to get smaller and closer together. So, I’m just going to tap in a few more of these little guys, softening the bottoms of them just by using flat strokes, and then for the clouds that are closest to the horizon line, I’m just going to use a flat brush. There’s not going to be as much shape to these clouds, there going to be more straight lines, because you don’t see as much detail as it gets further away from you. So, I’m just going to kind of tap in these little guys and let them kind of trail off to nothing, and that’s how you do a basic sky and clouds.
