How to Prepare Your Canvas for Acrylic Painting

Transcript

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. Back in the olden days, the artists used to make their own canvasses. They would have to prepare a frame, a wooden frame. They’d have to buy a canvas, and they would have to stretch it over and around the canvas. They actually nailed into into the back of the stretcher bar. They also had to prime their own canvasses. They had to make the gesso, or the primer. Nowadays, you can go to the art store and buy canvasses ready for you to use in many different sizes. There are also a couple of different examples of this type of canvas that’s got a deeper profile, and these canvasses are typically used without a frame, you just paint over the edges of the canvas and hang it on the wall. However, if you’d like to go through the process and learn how to stretch a canvas, you can also buy the parts and pieces needed. If you don’t want to go through all that trouble, then go to your craft store and buy a canvas of any shapes and sizes, and get started right away.
