How to Paint a Basic Sunset Using Acrylic Paint

Transcript

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville and New York. We’re gonna start by using our 1.5 inch flat brush and the yellow paint for the sun. First thing we’re gonna do is establish the horizon line on the canvas. It’s a good idea to stay away from the very center of the canvas. Its more intereting if your just above or just below the center point of the canvas. So, i’m going to start about an inch below and i’m go ahead to put a line going straight across the canvas. I like my sun to be somewhere on the left hand side of the canvas so i’m just going to pick a spot and draw my sun in. I’m going to take my yellow paint and i’m going bring some of the yellow paint out in the sky are. What i’m going to do is pick up a little bit if the red on the brush and I’m gonna start blending it right into this yellow paint. You want to do flat strokes going straight across and as you get next to your sun just try to make a nice straight line coming around the sun, blending whatever color is on your brush into the sun. I’m not trying to push down to hard on the brush. I just want to the colors to kinda naturally have a streak to them. Next thing im going to do is i’m going to take some of this straight red paint and i’m going to let the colors get gradually darker and darker as I go up to the top portion of the canvas and i’m going to blend it down into the paint I alrady have on the canvas. I’m going to come straight across. Once again I want it to be a little bit streaky and irrigated so i’m going to let some of those other colors kinda shine through. Now i’m going to take my red paint and going up a couple of steps and i’m going to introduce a new color. This is a magenta red and it will just give us a nice warm blend. The next thing i’m going to do is take this magenta red up a little bit further and i’m going to blend my purple tones into this magents red. This is the purple paint and i’m coming down from the top, just on the upper inch to inch and a half and I’m also going to try to fill in all rest of the white spots on the canvas. Letting these colors just gradually go from one to the next and thats how you you do your basic sunset.
