How to Do a Waltz Ladies Underarm Turn

Transcript

Aaron: Hey guys, it’s Aaron.

Kristina: And I’m Kristina.

Aaron: And we are professional dance instructors here in New York City, and today we’re going to be continuing in our waltz series, taking a look at the ladies’ underarm turn. So what we’re going to do is start this pattern in closed position with our partners, starting with a basic action. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three. Now as we step back, after half a box, here back on our right, the lady is forward on her left, I’m going to drop my right arm here, gentlemen, and raise and open my left to the lady’s right hand.

So from here I’m going to continue with this box action, side, together, stepping forward, and side, together, to meet the lady. And from here, continuing on back, and forward for the lady, side, together, flowing right back into our basic action, one more time. One, two, three. Forward, side, close. Back, side, together. Forward, side, together. And one, two, three. Forward, side, close. Back, side, together. Now let’s a take a closer look at what the lady is doing with her footwork.

Kristina: So ladies, we’ll just jump right in. We’re going to do the first half of the box. So back, side, close. And the gentleman is going to release our left side and raise our right. Again, really important that this left forward step is directly toward our partner. So we have one, and then we have forward walking steps, two, three. One, side, close. And then we finish that box going forward, side, and close.

Aaron: Now let’s try that with some music.
