How to Turn into Dip in Swing Dance

Transcript

Aaron: Hey guys it’s Aaron.

Christina: And I’m Christina.

Aaron: And we’re professional dance instructors here in New York City. And today we’re dipping back into our advanced swing series. Today talking about our final step, the turn into a dip. So what we’re going to be doing here is we’re going to be starting with a two hand hold. Let’s take a look at that from our basic again. One, two, three and four, five and six. Now from here gentlemen as we rock back we’re going to lead the ladies into our cuddle. Rock, step, triple step. So we have our ladies in that cuddle position now, from here gentlemen we have our right leg free. Ladies we have our left foot free. And we’re going to take two walking steps, single, single, as we roll the lady out. Single. Single. And to the side-by-side position. Now from here gentlemen we’re going to hold our position and lead the lady back in as she turns to her left, one, two, three, and, bang.

Christina: So let’s try that again. And ladies let’s look a little bit more closely at our footwork and the things that we have to do in this step. So starting in a double hand hold, we have, rock, step, triple step, walk, walk, left and right. And so here my weight is firmly on my right foot, my left foot is just kind of tapped out to the side, so that when he leads me to do the turn in, I’m going to start with my left foot. So that’s going to go, left, right, left, and then I’ll just set my right foot behind to kind of steady myself and go into the dip. And another thing that’s just kind of helpful, ladies make sure your not just throwing your weight at your partner. You don’t want to end up on the floor in this move. And gentlemen just make sure that you have a good, wide base, and that you’re there to kind of support the lady, whether she does just a very small dip or if she tries to go into a little bit of a more advanced move.

Aaron: Absolutely. Gentlemen it is our job to create a base and a frame over which the ladies can do that dip from. So as to whether she wants to go a little further, or whether she’s not so comfortable then we just take it nice and easy. So let’s take a look at that one more time, rolling into that. One, two, three, and there we go. Now let’s add that to some music.
