How to Do a Hip Lift in Swing Dance

Transcript

Aaron: Hey, guys, it’s Aaron.

Christina: And I’m Christina.

Aaron: And we’re professional dance instructors here in New York City, coming at you today with a little bit of our Advanced Swing Series. Talking today about the hip lift.

Now, for starters, just want to throw this out there; this is one of the more… when we get into the lifts, this tends to be one of the more difficult things we’re doing in any form of dance, and something that really requires a little bit of understanding of the technique to be able to support our own weight, so as not to over-burden our partners. So, as we take a look at this, we’re going to be very mindful of where we’re placing our weight, and how we’re helping our partner to support that weight.

So, for starters, we’re going to be starting with our basic action again; starting with a hand-to-hand hold in an open position. One, two, three, and four, five, and six. And, again, releasing to the lady: one, two, as we give her a strong indication coming forward to us. Gentlemen, we are going to step together, and make sure we get down low enough that we get under – get our hip underneath the lady, so that we are able to support her and place her on top, here.

So take a look at that one more time, how we just got into that. One, two, three, four. Okay? And moving on from there, we’re just going to take that around. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight; one, two. Take a look at that one more time from another angle. And one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight; one, two.

And just as another side note, ladies, what we’re going to be really doing to help the gentleman to support the weight here, is when we come into the lift, when we come up on the hip – three, four – we’re going to be putting a little bit of pressure through this left arm, pushing off of the gentleman’s shoulders, as in to hold us up. This is where a good ballet technique really comes in handy. Okay… So… let’s take a look at that, and let’s try that to music now.
