How to Do the American Spin in Swing Dance

Transcript

Aaron: Hey guys, it’s Aaron.

Kristina: And I’m Kristina.

Aaron: And we’re professional dance instructors coming at you today from New York City, and today we’re going to be talking about the swing and a little step we like to call the American spin. So let’s take a look at this one. Guys, what we’re going to be doing here to start is we’re going to be changing hands and starting with what we call a handshake hold. So from here we’re going to fall into our basic action, taking our left foot for the gentlemen, or right foot for the ladies, and rocking behind. Rock step, triple step, leaning in and indicating with our upper body the change of direction here. So we’re not going to let our elbows travel behind our bodies because we’re going to be winding up together leaning in sharing this connection here. Just send the lady to turn.

Kristina: So at this point, our right foot, we’re on count four. When we step on four we’re going to use this good kind of build up of rotation. And ladies it’s really important again, don’t let your elbow go behind your back, because you’re going to want to lean into this so that when you step on four you can start to turn. I’m going to look like this. Four, five and six, rock step. So, from here we’re going to do the rock step. One, two, three and four, five and six, rock step.

Aaron: So, let’s also talk about how we’re getting to that handshake hold because we’re normally used to starting with either a two-hand hold in our close position, so from here what we want to do is go back. One, two, leading our lady’s underarm turn, changing to a handshake hold. One and two, three and four, starting with a two-hand hold and changing over to the handshake, triple, triple, rock step. Now let’s try that to some music.
