How to Play the Pataflafla on the Drums

Transcript

A pataflafla is a rudiment that actually sounds like what you’re saying. Pata fla fla, pata fla fla. And it involves some single strokes mixed with some alternating flams as well.

Basically what you’re going to do is start with your strong stick up, and your strong hand up, and set up for a flam, which is your hand in the air, and the other stick close to the snare drum head. The first note is going to be flammed. And you’re going to follow that by two single strokes, left right, and then followed by a last flam note. Flam.

So it would be like flam, left, right, flam, flam, left, right, flam, flam. And this rudiment does not alternate. It alternates sticking, but it doesn’t alternate leaving on the hand. So once you practice on the right side, what you need to do is go back and practice on the left side as well.

A standard right side pataflafla grouping sounds like this. And again, if you get confused with any of these rudiments, if you say them out loud, a lot of them sound like what you’re saying. In the case of the pataflafla, pata, fla, fla, it’s exactly what you’re going to be playing on the drums. Flam, left, right, flam. [inaudible 00:01:39] Pata fla fla.
