How to Play the Flam Tap on the Drums

Transcript

The flam tap is a very common rudiment that you’re gonna run into when learning the drums. What you’re gonna start with is basically a single flam, which is your one stick up in the air and the other stick down toward the drum. This is set up for a right flam since your right stick is up. And what follows is a single tap afterwards. You’re gonna strike the drum, not hitting them together but just separated enough where you hear that flam sound.

Bring your right stick back up and tap it. And then what’s gonna happen after your tap is its going to reverse itself to the left side. Your left stick will come up. Your right stick will be close to the snare. It will then tap the following, and then it’ll reverse itself. So a single flam tap grouping would look something like this.

When you alternate it for both sides, it’ll look like this.

Remember a flam tap is the flam on the first stroke followed by a tap afterwards. And then a reversal of the entire rudiment on the other side of your body.
