EntertainmentBelly Dancing 101: How to Belly Dance

How to Do Piston Hips in Belly Dancing

Transcript

So now we’re going to try a downward hip accent or as we can call it piston hips. So, now we’re going to keep the knees really bent. We’re going to lift the right hip up and we’re actually going to take the right hip off the floor as well completely. Then we’re going to take a step onto the right leg and we’re going to instantly life the left leg off of the floor. And again switching to the right foot hovering above the floor and then switching to the left foot. While we’re doing this we’re actually going to add a hip drop on each side. So in order to do a hip drop you can just release the hip down and life it back up and you are going to feel this in your obliques. So as we switch our weight to the right side your going to do an accent downward. You’re going to hop over lifting the hip off the floor which is the opposite side. Switch, and switch, and switch and switch, and what you want you want to try to avoid is having a bounce down. In order to do that you need to keep the knees really bent at all times, chest lifted tummy tucked. Lets try with music. And since you’re taking a step with each movement you can travel with this very easily. You can come forward, you can travel back. Lets try that a little bit faster. Remember to still breathe, relax the neck, relax the hands. And that’s how you do a downward twisted hip.
