How to Cut the Deck One-Handed

Transcript

My name is Ben Nemzer and I’m a magician. One of my specialties is Close-Up magic which is magic with ordinary objects. Decks of card, ropes, rubber bands. And, I do that all over New York City.

I’m going to teach you some of the basics of magic that you guys can start performing right away.

All right. I’m going to teach you how to cut the cards using only one hand. Also known as the Charlie Cut. That looks like that.

Let me walk you through it. First of all, you want to hold your hand like this. So, you can hold the deck about an inch and a half above your palm.

And, you’re holding four fingers along one side. And your thumb along the other. Now, you apply a little bit of pressure here and let the bottom half drop. Just using gravity.

Then, you take your pointer finger here. And you begin to lift up. Now, as soon as there’s enough pressure on the bottom of the deck, you can release the grip here and just push up with your pointer finger.

And let this packet fall into your hands. And then you close it shut with your thumb.

I’m going to walk you through it one more time so you can see it from a different angle.

Once again, you hold it with four fingers here and the thumb right over there. You let the bottom half drop. Then, you push it up with your pointer and let that packet fall. And you close it there.

Now, it’s going to take a lot of practice. You’ll probably end up dropping the cards several times, but it’s worth it.

Practice it, practice it and practice it. And, pretty soon you’ll be able to do it easily.

And that’s the One Handed Cut.
