My name is Ben Nemzer and I’m a magician. One of my specialties is close up magic which is magic with ordinary objects, decks of cards, ropes, rubber bands and I do that all over New York City. I’m going to teach you some of the basics of magic that you guys can start performing right away. How to do the color changing sugar packet trick: I’m going to show you how to take a sugar packet and change the color. So we’ll use one of these yellow ones and put it one hand and (puffs into closed hand) and now its pink (removes pink packet from hand). Here’s the secret. You use two different sugar packets. Now this trick was recently published in Magic for Dummies, which is a great book, and it teaches you how to do it there but I’m going to show you right now. What you do is you crumple up a sugar packet and you hold it in your fist or in your fingers right here or in the palm of your hand, whichever is easier. And then you take another sugar packet and if you’re holding like this nobody should be able to tell you’re also hiding something else in there. You crumple it up nice and tight and you drop it on the table. Now when you go to pick it up, you push it into your lap and switch it for the other one. Now you’re actually starting with two but you can’t see one of them. Then you drop the other one off the table and they don’t realize that this is the different one. You place it in the other hand, do a magic move, and now it’s a different color. And that’s how you change a sugar packet into a different color.
