How to Break into a Dance Circle

Transcript

Loretta: Hey everybody, what’s up? My name’s Loretta. This is my twin sister, Ava.

Ava: I’m Ava.

Loretta: And this is Anthony. Today, we’re going to teach you how to break in a circle of dancers. If you see a group of people and they’re all dancing and you want to dance with them, the key thing to remember is to just match their groove.

Watch them for a second, if they’re all doing a certain kind of move and they’re all together, you want to break in doing that move. You don’t want to break in doing something else, because then the circle is just going to go a lot further away from you, and then you’re just going to be stuck there by yourself.

Ava: Exactly, so the key thing is to just remember, you want to break into their circle so just match their groove. If we’re in a circle and Anthony wants to come in and match our group, Loretta and I are in the circle. We’re step touching, right? We’re in the groove. We’re in the groove. Anthony is gradually going to come into our circle, and he’s going to match our groove, and now we’re all together.

Loretta: Our circle opens, and now Anthony’s in the circle with us and we’re all dancing together. Awesome. Okay, so again, if we’re dancing and we’re in a circle and we’re in a groove, and Anthony wants to come in, this is what he shouldn’t do. We’re dancing. We’re in a groove.

Ava: Okay, so Anthony, you’re going to do what we shouldn’t do.

Anthony: Yup.

Loretta: Got it.

Anthony: So the big don’t in this, is to really unbalance the level that they have at the moment, so with me coming in like this, and just…

Loretta: You know what’s going to happen? This is what’s going to happen. Our groove is going to stop. There’s going to be no more circle.

Ava: Our groove is going to stop.

Loretta: Our groove is going to stop. We’re going to stop dancing. So the key thing to remember, when joining a circle of people dancing, is to match their groove and come in with confidence, and have fun with us.

Ava: So let’s do it again. We’re going to dance. We’re going to groove. “Hey. Hey. Hey. Oh, who’s this? Let’s welcome this person into our circle. Let’s all have a good time. Let’s all dance together, because that’s what it’s all about. Having fun, yes?”

Anthony: Yep.

Loretta: Yes, all right, so that’s how you break into a circle and dance.
