How to Entertain Kids on a Rainy Day

Instructions

  • Step 1: Introduce the classics Introduce kids to rainy day classics like building forts with bedding over furniture, interior hide and seek, and playing doctor, using toilet paper to bandage teddy.
  • Step 2: Inspire art lovers Slice a potato in half and cut a shape onto the flat surface with a kitchen knife to make a stamp. Dip the stamp into paint and create away.
  • Step 3: Get their wiggles out Get their wiggles out with a dance party. Put on some high energy music and rumba, turkey trot, twist, or hokey pokey until everyone drops.
  • TIP: Adding pillowcase capes to the dance party turns it into a grand ball for princes and princesses.
  • Step 4: Involve the family dog Involve the family dog in a new twist on the scavenger hunt. Have the kids hide doggy treats to see if they can stump Fido’s keen nose.
  • Step 5: Bring out the trash Bring out the trash — old boxes of all sizes, including cardboard tubes and paper bags, to transform into puppets, costumes, cars, castles, telescopes, box cities, and faraway universes with tape and crayons.
  • TIP: Other clean trash such as cereal and toothpaste boxes, milk cartons, and laundry soap jugs are perfect for creating a play store.
  • Step 6: Head to town Head to town when all else fails and the kids get grumpy. It may be time for a trip to the movies, museum, or library to restore spirits and bring back everyone’s sunny disposition.
  • FACT: It has rained frogs on rare occasions throughout history when amphibians were swept into clouds by waterspouts, whirlwinds, or tornadoes and later dropped.
