Alright you guys, we’re going to do the Michael Jackson toe stance. Now, you want to make sure you have the right shoes for this, which means you have to have a great plate of a sole which is in front of the shoe or the sneaker or whatever you are about to wear. So, with that in mind, I’m not going to lie to you, my loafers kind of went out of commission right now. So I have to break out the dunks real quick. So, you can use your spin move before the toe stance, because that’s usually when he does it. Like, including that Billie Jean sequence. So, you want to do your spin move, however many spins you want to do. And then you land, [BOW!] Right there. So then you want to try to hold that. So, once again, spinning, shew. One or two spins, and then you are going to go, [BOW!] That is your tow stance. Okay, guys, now I can’t stress enough to you that you have to wear the right shoes. No flip flops, no sandals, no bare feet, no soft shoes, no soft sole. I’m talking about the hard soles that are really going to protect your toes. So really, really use that. There is no way that I’m doing this without hard soles of the feet. So really, really keep that in mind. Don’t forget it. Alright, you guys, we’re going to do the toe stance together.

Alright you guys, what’s going on? We are going to get into the Micheal Jackson spins or spin. So, the first thing we want to do is get the preparation for the spin happening. So what you’re going to do is your prep. You’re going to step on both feet. But what ever direction your turning you want to have both feet go to that direction. If you want to start to your right, and go here, ha. So when you prep, you’re going to jump with both feet, ha. Take the foot cross, ha. And that’s where you are.

Lets do that again. So I’m turn to my left. So I’m going to prep. Cross, then I turn. Now for you people who are spotter, or technical dancers, if you want to do two turns you may want to spot. So what I mean by spotting is.. Spot spot. Checking out your direction. Now Micheal doesn’t spot. He just goes. Then it’s up to you. I like to spot just for verification purpose. Yeah, there’s your spin.

Alright you guys, what’s going on. My name is Robert Taylor Jr. or aka the Woo man. I’m a entertainer. I’m a singer/dancer/actorm and I’ve been doing this for about 20 years, you know, entertaining. Really sorely sipping myself into the dance community for 15 years and more so into the music industry for the last five years. I released two songs on iTunes this year, one song is called Get Down Tonight, another is called Break It Down. I was on So You Think You Can Dance last year, last season, season eight made the top 16. I was in a music video with (?) as a dancer for the wined up song. I recently just danced for LL Cool J as a dancer.

I first discovered Michael’s music back in the year of 1987. The 1987 Smooth Criminal video captured me and you know just seeing him in his style and the way he gave his flare, and his voice and his demeanor and what every move meant and using his dancers in the whole scenery in the whole your know 1930s’ style. Yeah, I really felt I immersed as a child wanting to do something just like him. It made me want to become a entertainer and he’s why I sing, he’s why I dance, he’s why I express love, peace and unity. So if you want to find me on line you can look me up on twitter which is @d8robert, the letter D, the number eight, Robert. My Facebook fan page is facebook.com/d8robert.

Transcript

All right, you guys. So now we’re going to get into the Moonwalk, which was debuted by Michael Jackson in 1982 for the Motown 25th anniversary. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve got to check it out. Please do.

So the Moonwalk: What creates the illusion is the fact that he’s shifting weight, as he usually does in most of his moves, but he’s shifting weight using the terminology from gliding.

So with that in mind, let us start out by pressing through the right foot. Now, as you press, this is what the right foot would be doing. You’re here, and you’re pressing all the way through to the heel. The other foot is just simply sliding back. Now, keep in mind that the leg that slides back, you don’t want the weight to be on this leg. You want it to be sorely on the right, since this is the one that’s creating the push, so if I did it slowly, it would look like this.

Now, what’s going to happen is I’m going to change weight, shift it, the left heel is going to come up, and the left heel is going to push through like this, and as the left leg pushes through, my right foot goes here simultaneously. It looks like this. And then you switch and shift over to your right side. Shift. Switch to your left. Shift right. Shift left.

So with that in mind, let’s try it a little faster. I’m going to go here. Shift. Left comes up. Shift. Right comes up. Left comes up. Right comes up. And so on and so forth.

Now, that is your Moonwalk.

Transcript

All right you guys. We’re going to do the moonwalk sideways or a.k.a. the side glide. So pretty much the same exact thing as the moonwalk in place. Same thing as the original moonwalk. Your only difference is you’re turning your heels forward. So I want to start with my heel turning on the inside. Remember how we pressed with the moonwalk going this way. Same thing but now you got to turn that heel inwards because we’re going travel towards the side that you’re going towards. I want to start pressing through my left and I’m going to travel to my right. So I’m going to press here. Press. My right foot is sliding. I’m shifting weight over and I’m bringing this right heal up. The left foot is coming in. Guess what? I’m going to turn out again and push. And now my right heel comes up as my left foot comes in. I repeat. Left heel turns out. I push through the ball of the foot to the heel as the right foot skates in. And this right heel comes up and I go to the ball of the foot, to the heel. And so that comes in. That is our side glide.

Alright you guys, this is the Michael Jackson head and foot walk. So, it’ almost like his own pimp walk. So you’re going to go flick, lets just go over the feet first. Flick, one, flick, two, flick, three, flick, four. You can make a circle with it as well. Flick, five, flick, six, flick, seven, flick, eight. Now when the foot goes in, the head goes down, when the foot goes out, head comes up. So what’s happening is, and one, and two, and a three, and a four, and a five, and a six, and a seven, and a eight. Now during this walk, he does a couple of gestures. He does three main gestures. The point, the shaking hand or the your talk is cheap hand. So with that in mind you have, a one, two and a three and a four, one, two three, four or this one six, seven and then a eight. This was his 1987 joint right yeah. It’s, like you got to get, get into the crease. Into the crease, into the crease, all right.

Transcript

All right you guys, we are getting into the MJ Robot. He has quite a few different robot styles, and he goes on with, there’s Dance Machine, there’s Billie Jean, there’s Human Nature, there’s Working Day and Night, but we’re going into two of my favorites, which are the robot from Bille Jean 1996 MTV Music Awards. And we’re going to get into Human Nature 1993 Bucharest concert, ooh hoo, yeah. So let’s do the first, which will be the Billie Jean.

So we have a tick, his ticking robot. What’s happening is you’re going to, this is your motion in without the robot, this is your motion. So we’re pretty much walking with our hands on the belt, or whatever you have that you’re wearing, mm-hmm. Now what you want to do is tick each part that you’re doing. You can tick, what you want to do is tick every part of your body, even if it’s your shoulders, your feet, and the head. So with that in mind, you’re going to go pick up, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, and place, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, pick up, tick, tick, tick, keep ticking as much as you can, tick, tick, a tick-torial, ooh hoo, tick, tick.

Now we’re going to do the Human Nature Robot. So he starts out here, he brings his legs in and out, he grabs, like he puts his hand on the wall, puts his hand on another wall, and he looks like he grabs the wall, pushes. So, you want to bend those legs, place one hand on the wall, place another hand on the wall, and when you place the hands on the wall, lock your arms, soot, soot, so you have, shoot, shoot, and then you’re going to pretend your hands are stuck on that wall. And when you push, lock, shoot, you see what’s happening there?

So you have phewt, shoot, shoot, shoot, and then he turns, and then he goes kick, kick. So you have, robot, robot, woot, tribble, poom, and then you want to turn, and then you’re going to fade out with the shoulders.

All right, you guys. We’re going to get into the Michael Jackson foot/leg work, so you can put it together with your hand gestures. So, one of the main positions that he uses is this. Mm-hmm. There are quite a few of them. There’s the long version. There’s the shorter version. There’s the pelvis version.

So let’s use the pelvis version first. What’s happening here, I’m sitting on my hip. In this particular case, I’m sitting on my left hip. Now, the right foot is out, because I’m sitting on my left hip, and then the weight is on the left leg, so my right heel is going to be up as my left hip sits. If I were going to be sitting on the right hip, my left heel would come up, so I would say pow. You see what’s happening? In slow motion, I would say bow. You see what’s happening here? So this is your position, you’re sitting. This originated in the ’70s and ’80s.

Now, as he got into the late ’80s, early ’90s, he used this. It became closer. He went from this to bringing it in a little bit closer. You see what’s happening? So I strike, bam. So I’m going to step, hah. Notice I’m not sitting too much on the hip like I did in the ’80s. I’m bringing it upward a little bit, and the leg is even more straighter, because I’m not sitting so much into it. You see what I’m saying? So we’re here.

Now, getting into one of those, for example, if I want to go bow, see how both legs are straight? As I’m using one of the hand gestures, I break in, shah!. You see that? Hah! As he used in Smooth Criminal. So I can go here, bah, or I can go here, bow. You see what’s happening?

So pretty much, using those two, you can sit, be right here, or be out there.

Alright you guys. We’re getting into Michael Jackson hand gestures. Now, one thing particular about the hand gestures – I know sometimes when I teach my dance classes and I’ll do a move or something like that a lot of people don’t really get the articulation of the hand, the fingers, the wrist and what everything does. And I know when I was a little kid I studied all that stuff. So we’re going to tap into that.

Here’s gesture number one. The pointer finger. So it’s like this when he’s singing, points up.

Another one. Pointing at you. You. You. You, and you, and you and again you. And you too. So that’s number two.

Number three. This. It looks like Spiderman. Spiderman is here. Michael is there. So there’s a bending of the wrist. There’s an angle. You see what’s kind of going on here? So you want to angle that wrist. Two of the fingers are down. Your pointer and your pinky finger is up and your thumb is out causing that.

Another one. The shaking hand. When he does this in “Billy Jean.” Yeah? The shaking hand.

Also, the inside pointer finger pointing on the inside when he’s singing, “Wanna Be Starting Something.” When he comes up to you and he’s like…on the inside, yeah?

Another one. All five fingers. This one of the only times he has his fingers together with the exception of the thumb being out. So you want the hand to come out here, four fingers together, come out.

Transcript

All right, you guys, we’re going to do the Michael Jackson James Brown Shuffle. Now, there’s two different versions of this shuffle. One shuffle, you can actually count it. The second one, you can’t.

So, I know I’m unable to count it. Let’s not say, “can’t,” let’s just say “unable to at the moment.”

So, you’re going to go, One. Now this is the main stance that you want to hold, right here. This one right here because this is the pause of all of it, which is on the three, the five, and the seven. You start it on one.

One, snap and turn in. Two. Now the right is going to come on the, And turn out. The left is going to turn out as well. But on the right, you’re going to be on the ball of the foot.

Now, on the three, you come back to this position. You’re going to go, four and five. Six. Now, I’m going on the heel. On the left, and I’m picking up my right foot. And, now guess what, I’m going to pick up my left foot this time. Seven. And my right toe comes out, staying on the right heel.

I know. I know what you’re thinking. What’s going on? I got ya. Here, you step out. Your right foot is going to pick up. The left heel just shifted, this way.

You have here, shift, [pick up the left foot and just move the right toe. Shoot. See what’s happening? So, here. Step. Here. Causing, shoot.

Now, the other shuffle, you just gotta go. You know what I mean? You just gotta go. So, basically, in slow motion, this is what’s happening. The heels are swaying from side to side. Hands are on the waist, and you can use your hips to kind of help you guide through. So, here.. Slow motion for you.

And sometimes, one foot kind of trickles. And then sometimes, he has another foot that goes here, and this one is kind of coming here.

Together it’s like. See what’s happening? There you go. It’s crazy, I know. You can do it.

Alright you guys so we are going to do the Moon Walk forwards. Forward but still in place. So what’s happening is, same idea as the moon walk, but the only difference is you’re not going back. So you’re going to do the same thing as we did in the Moon Walk. Now, normally, in the Moon Walk, we would start to go back but in this one your weight is going to continuously stay. And now we’re kicking the left to stay in the place. See what’s happening. So we’re kicking a leg placing and then we push through. So if I’m starting on my left, I want to kick the left, prepare, go through the ball of the feet and heel, as my right foot just skates back. I going to kick my right, prep, the weight is going be on the right foot. I’m going to go to the heel, and the left foot just slides back. Once more. I’m going to kick the left, make sure you’ll push through the ball of the foot first and then go to the heel and that’s right, kick through press to the ball of the foot, and to the heel, and the left is sliding back. For my technical dancers you want to go through your metatarsals.

All right you guys, we’re going to go into Michael’s heel groove, it’s one of the simpler steps in his wide ranged vocabulary of movement. So, pretty much, he uses this in Jam, and he uses this in Billie Jean, sometimes when he just gets back into the songs. So you have the heel, it’s just going to come on the one, stay on the ball of the foot on the end count, heel comes in two, heel comes out and heel comes in three, out and four. So basically this is what the heel is doing, but you want to sit, and then, and uses the pelvis too. Snap . . . you got to do the heel groove for your brother, yeah.

All right, so we are here doing some more of those freestyle Billie Jean moves. You guys doing a good job so far, so keep up the good work. Here we go, patience is a virtue, especially with MJ. So you have this one, around the world, so you’re going to push thing in. Pshew.

Make sure you’re pretending that you’re pushing air. And what creates the illusion? The more your shoulder goes to the direction that you’re moving to, the more of that elastic illusion you will create. So you’re going to push, and also start on the heels, you see what’s happening here? Much different if you just go here, but if your heels shift up, you’re good to go. So you want to push as if you’re pushing against the wall here, and then shift over, pshew, nicely. Push. Pshew.

So now you have the shifting second position move, so you’re going to prepare kick, up, down, left, right, grab and out. One up, down, left, right, out, hit, hit, hit, poom bow, one more time. So you’re doing a kick, left, right, hit, in, out, up, down, left, right, out, ha. Now he checks his hat sometimes, checking the hat means hitting it, making sure it’s down. So for example if I come here, bow, check, so that’s what’s happening, make sure, bow, he does that in a lot of his moves. So that’s another one right there.

We just did the intro of “Billy Jean”, so now we’re going to go into his freestyle moves. Freestyle move number one, you’re going to glide in place. It’s similar to the moonwalk, but the only difference is you’re not traveling, you’re just staying into the same place. If I start with my right foot, shoo, kick, push. You kick, push, kick, push, kick, push, kick push. Now what’s happening here, as I’m kicking, I place the landing. If I start on my right, I kick on my right and I’m pushing through to the heel on my right foot as my left foot is skating backwards. Without both feet, it looks like this: shoo, ha, shoo, ha. Now if I’m going here and I use the other leg, shoo, that’s what you have. Kick. As I’m pushing through my left heel, my right foot is coming back simultaneously as the left heel comes down. I kick here, I kick, go here. The kick goes to my right, goes down to the heel, the left foot goes back. I kick from my left, my left heel comes down as my right comes back, so you have this. Angle with the head, too, those isolations. That’s one move.

Another move, you have a shuffle. One shuffle here. You have, he steps, here’s your preparation. Prep, prep, give a little head nod, shoo, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle. What’s happening with the shuffle, weight is on one side of the leg. He shifts over to the other side. That’s what it looks like in slow motion. Shoo. Now I’m shifting over to the right side, shoo, your left, my right. Shoo. So, that’s a shuffle.

Now, you have an easy move here, ha, shoo, ha, shoo, ha, ch, ha, ch, ha. Basically, I’m doing jumps. Right left, left right, right left, left right. I’m going right left, that is what I’m going to use with the arm and point, shoo, ha, and usually his background singers, they go, “Ho, ho, ho, ho.”

All right, you guys. We’re getting in the bridge of the Billy Jean song, so this is like the climax of the song.

So you have… you’re going to go one, two, three, four, mm-hmm, five, walk, six, walk, seven, point, eight. Mm-hmm. Let’s go again. Five, six, seven, eight. One, and a two. Same, almost very similar to the camel walk. You’ve got one, and a two, and a three, four, five, and a six, and a seven, eight, or eight. He changes it up. Eight. You have one, two, three, m-hmm, look, look, turn, hit, step, look, look. Mm-hmm.

So you have, there’s a one, and a two, and a three, he, five, and a six, and a seven, whoo. One, two. Or sometimes it goes there, so you can go one, two, look, hah. Now, make sure that your wrists are up here. Very important. And here, push down, look, look. Make sure your wrists are up. Prep your turn, hit, boom, look, look. Or in the ’80s, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And then that’s where your Moonwalk comes in.

Now, if you need a tutorial on the Moonwalk, check out that Moonwalk video. Mm-hmm. So you have. You’re going go Moonwalk, Moonwalk, Moonwalk, Moonwalk, turn, turn, turn, and then you have the toe stance, bam, right up in there. Mm-hmm. Now, make sure that toe stance, you have to have the right shoes for it, because if you don’t, you could do a little something down there to the toes, so make sure you have the right soles up here, so you can really, bam, land that. Mm-hmm.

All right, now we’re going to do one of Michael Jackson’s signature verse moves in “Billie Jean.”

So, you’re gonna shift. First of all let’s get our weight shifting.

You have shift left, shift right, shift left, shift right. As you’re moving to the left, my right leg is going to come in. So, you’re gonna flick it in. See how I move it in. Weight to center. Now moving to my right, my left comes up. Move to the left, right comes up. Move to the right, the left comes up.

Now, you break this down slow. As it shifts, both feet are going to turn in, but you want to make sure that the weight is solely on one leg. As I start one, I start the other.

So, you have this.

You can do whatever you want with the arm.

Swing it.

Bring it forward, bring it out.

That’s one.

Now, you have the Camel Walk. This one we know. So, basically you’re step-touching. So, you’re going to go, one, and two, and three. From this angle, you’re going to go, left, right, touch right, left.

So in actuality, you have this: And a one, and a two, and a three, and a four. With my arms, one and a two, and a three, and a four. In the 90s he turns it with his hand.

Turn.

Camel Walk with the heels this time.

One and a two and a three and a four. Heels. Heel, heel. He had an upper body groove, too. So, I’m going on one, and a two and a three. Then I clap, then I clap.

And now, the Flick Kick. As he does in most of his kicks, he has three different kicks, this is one of them. The flick starts outwards first. You’re gonna step, go outwards. And then bring it in.

So, you’re going to prep, come out and then in.

So, you have in fast motion, bang.

All right, you guys, what is going on? This is “Billy Jean.” The intro, the very beginning, he starts this pose here. What you’re going to is you’re going to step in with your right, and then come here with your left. He does this pose in most of his music videos, but he uses this as the intro for this song. You’re going to have a hat, too. Very important, get a hat. As long as you have a hat and shirt or a jacket that kind of flips over, you’re good to go.

Now, you have here. Make sure when you put the hat on, the fingers are spread so you have this, and then you’re going to ping, put it down like you’re getting ready, razzle dazzle. You’re going to go one, two, three, and a four, five, six, seven, eight, and a two, two, three, four, five, six, and a seven, and an eight.

Okay. Now, the next part of the intro. Prep your jump, now you’re going to kick. You’re going to go kick and you’re going to tap that knee, so it’s like bah. That’s what creates the electricity in that kick. You got to tap it and pose it. Pah, roll, shoot out, bow, and then you’re going to pelvic thrust, look.

You’re going to repeat the same thing. Step, kick, bow, roll, shoot out, sit, and make sure your hands are stylized right up in here. Shoot, look, cross, bow, jazz hands, boom.

You’re going to come out here, shwoop, ha. When you hear boom, the right is going to go behind the left or vice versa. However you want to learn it, your choice. Then switch, shwoop, mm-hm, grab your hat, shoo, and then flick it. So, you have, hold this for four at one, tick tick, two, tick tick, three tick tick, four, and a one, two, three, four, five, six, and a seven, and an eight, and two, two, three, four, five, and a six, and a seven, eight, prep, kick, roll, shoot, bow, hit. Prep, kick, roll, shoot, thrust. Look, swhoo, ha. Throw it. Take it off first, shwoo.

And then, he gets ready. He smooths his hair. At the time, he had a nice little jerry curl going on, so he swooped it, ha, and then smoothed it again, shoo, ta, shwoom, step, and then, that’s when he gets his microphone, shoo, and he starts singing.

All right you guys, we’re getting a little deeper into the song, so we’re going to do the Mamase Mamasa Mamakusa. So you have, you’re going to go one and, two hops, you got, you could tap yourself, one, and two, and three, and four, and a five, and six, and a seven, and eight.

So you have three hops in-between each one. The first one is going to be just two hops, so you’re going to say one and two. Now the rest of them are three hops, and a three, and four, and a five, and six, and a seven, and eight. On your even numbers, the two, four, six, and eight, the leg flick happens here, ha. So you’re going to snap, flick, and you can give a little head whip too, so that there are boom, boom bam, see what’s happening?

So let’s go slow with that again. You have one, and two, and a three, and four, and a five, and six, and a seven, and eight. Now, the walk, because he usually walks after that. So you’re going to go eight kick, one kick, two kick, three kick, four kick, five kick, six kick, seven kick, eight.

Now during that walk is mini head-nods. So what’s happening is, as you’re flicking the feet, there’s head nods, and then you can put your hand in a pocket because he does this in some of his other songs, and you can use this, the fingers too, he does this, you’ve probably seen this in Bad as well.

This walk is in Billie Jean, as well as You Wanna Be Startin Something, as well as the hand shake, and there’s your walk. So you have, in total you have, and you can also do the Mamase in circles. You can go one, and two, and a three, and four, and a five, and six, and a seven, and eight, more one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

All right, what’s going on now? This is Rock With You, and this took place in the late 1970’s so it’s very groovy, and you’re really sitting into the pocket of your groove. So whatever your groove is, you want to feel that. So, basically you can start either from your left or your right. Whatever’s more feasible for you. What’s happening is, you’re digging in on a one, two, dig three, four, dig five, six, dig seven, eight. Excluding the upper body, what’s happening is your knees are going to bend. Well, the first knee that you start with, the first leg, you knee is going to bend. The hip is going to sink into the knee. You’re going to go on the one, and the heel is going to come up. So here’s one, come out with it on the two. Other side you’re going to go three, the knee is going to dig in, the heel is going to come up, the hip is going to sink and it’s going to twirl around.

Four. You’re going to repeat, five, sinking in. My hip’s sinking in. My knee’s bent. My heel comes up, five. His swerve, six. Again, repeat on the other side. A hip sinks. Knee bends. Heel comes up, seven, eight. Now keep in mind whatever’s sinking, let’s say my right hip sinks, my right leg bends, my right heel comes up. The part that’s sinking is the part that swoops. So here I’m going to swoop to the right side. Now I sink in, my left hip sinks. My left knee sinks. My left heel sinks. I sink it and I swoop it over to the left side. So the swoop helps create that feel. You see what’s happening?

Now, what’s happening with the upper body, my arms are following those swoops. So let’s say I’m swooping just on the right side. See what’s happening? The arms are following those swoops. So if I’m swooping this way, my arms are going to also swoop this way. If I’m going to the left side, my arms are also going to swoop. Now what’s also happening is, you’re really going to dig into it. Because if you swoop here, if you don’t swoop here, then you just get this type of feel. But if you dig it. So, with that in mind, let’s try this with some music. I’ll count you in.

And five, six, seven, right side. Play with it. Dig it.
