Your basic step, it’s just a transfer of weight. There are 8 beats, which makes merengue one of the easiest dance and one of the hardest because of the cueing motions. It’s really simple.
We’re going to start with the left foot, and we’re going to transfer the weight on the count 1, so you go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, in an open double hand hold. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I’ll show you the other side. Closer dance position. Leaders, most of you, should always start with the left foot. Follows always with the right. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7, 8. If you’re closer to your partner, same way. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Make sure your feet are in between each other. The leader’s left foot will be outside the follower’s right.
