What Is LA Style Salsa?

Transcript

“Hello, my name is Jorday Rivera, and I am an expert in salsa. I own two dance studios in Queens, New York. We’re going to be learning a progression of salsa moves so we can actually go out, practice, take it to the clubs, take it to a party, and you can show off all the great moves you learned. What is LA style salsa? Mark tell me

Mark: Well here you go, this is LA style salsa, well basically, if you, let’s take a step back a little bit when we talked about Cuban style salsa, Cubans are one of the first immigrants to this country and they brought their style of salsa everywhere not just to Miami but to the West Coast as well. So in LA they also dance on one and as is typical of LA you’ll see a lot of flash, a lot of turn patterns, a lot of very intricate dibs, a lot of aerial moves, you know, they are very Hollywood, it’s a very Hollywood and dynamic way of dancing. It’s also danced on the one so it’s also a feeling very different to the way we dance in New York, very different to on tune but it also has its roots with Cuba and it also has its roots with the, you know, with the whole vibe of what Hollywood and LA is. So when you think of LA style salsa you’re right to think about LA in every respect of the word, you know, it’s going to be flashy, it’s going to be tricks, it’s going to be intricate dibs. And you know, when they go out, they wear their black and white shoes and they wear their Zeus suits and they are really in character for dancing salsa. Harquin [sp] back to an earlier decade, like 50s and 60s. And that basically is LA style salsa.
