Let’s go over the thumb palm, another wonderful coin concealment. Take a look. Showing the left hand empty, then you’re able to pluck a coin out of the air.

Unlike the classic palm which is held right here, the thumb palm is where the coin is clipped here, between your thumb and pointer finger, so from the front you cannot see the coin. You have all the freedom in the world to just move your fingers; play the piano if you’d like!

To produce the coin, have the coin in your thumb clip and show the left hand empty. Turn your left hand over, take the pinchers, they come in and pinch the coin from the audience view. That coin is clipped now, the hand moves down and produce and show the coin.

So in real time, the hand is shown empty; front and back. Clip, or pinched, and then exposed. And now you have a coin miracle.

Hi guys. This is Matt Wayne. Some of you may remember me from a couple years ago. I did some Howcast videos a while back and I’m happy to be back in the studio, filming the Coin Magic series this time around. And I hope to bring you many more in the future.

How I got started in magic was about 5 years old, I got a magic set from my grandfather for, I think it was either Hanukkah or Christmas, I don’t know, I celebrate both. And ever since then, it kind of just took off. I had my first paying gig when I was 8 years old and then, from there, it just kind of snowballed.

I’ve been all over the world. I entertain mainly for celebrities and at parties, like for the Emmys and the Tonys and It’s a lot of fun. I get to do magic tricks for a living. How amazing is that?

I hope you enjoy the videos. If you’d like to find me on the World Wide Web, you can do a Google search. Just type in celebrity magician Matt Wayne and you’ll find me. You can also tweet me on Twitter. It’s @realmattwayne or if you want a direct link, it’s celebritymagician.com.

So you’d like to learn more about magic, huh? Specifically coin magic. Well, I can help you.

Here’s a secret that I’ve learned over the years. Practictioners of the art of magic over the years have secretly, and cleverly concealed their secrets in books. So what does that mean to you?

Take a trip to the local library and you can actually find a book called JB Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic. It’s available at any Barnes & Noble or bookstore. You can work through this book and you’ll learn slight of hand with coin, vanishes, everything. It also includes the history behind coin magic, a wonderful find.

The second book, the first chapter is completely dedicated to coin sleight of hand. Worth getting. This is a nine volume series, my mentor Danny Hein, who is very, very influential, pushed me on these books, and I absolutely loved them.

The third is for you experts out there, once you work through Bobo and then once you work through the Tarvelt course, you can pick up David Roth’s Expert Coin Magic book. It’s highly recommended for those that start with those two books first and then move on.

Remember, magic is not just about the tricks. There’s also the skill and the dexterity that comes along with it that you have to master. Doing something like the coin roll, for instance, is a perfect example of something that you could be doing while reading or studying the art of magic.

I highly recommend building up your dexterity because it’s something that will carry on into the tricks that you’ll perform for your friends and family.

I’m going to show you how to produce a coin from two cards. And, what’s going to happen, or what you’ll see, is the two cards are shown. And then, out of the middle of those two cards a coin will appear.

Looks like this. Card number one is shown. That’s the seven of hearts. Then the second card is shown. That’s the six of diamonds. Place the six of diamonds on the bottom. Give the cards just a little flick.

Maybe you can say the magic words: Iggy, wiggy, piggy and poof! And, out pops money.

You secretly, from the very start, have a coin underneath the card. Now, you’re going to take one of the cards off the top. Bring it up to the audience and show it. In this case happens to be the seven of hearts.

You’re going to take that card, placing it on the top. At the same time, you’re going to steal that coin from that bottom card, as you then show the bottom card to the audience.

By bringing it up. Showing it. In this case it happens to be the six of diamonds. You then say that you’re going to take that card and place it to the bottom.

Now, what’s happening here. That coin is being placed on top of the card that you just showed, is now secretly in the middle. You’re then going to give a little flick of the card.

You can squeeze the cards like this and it will make a popping sound. Or you could say a magical phrase. I always prefer, “Iggy, wiggy, piggy and poof.”

Just release your grip on the cards and out will naturally fall a coin. And you have a coin miracle.

I’m going to show you how to do a Four Coin Flourish. Now what flourish is, is not necessarily a magic trick, but it gives your coin magic perhaps a much needed flair.

As you can see, coins are nice displayed in my hands. Now we’re going to start small with this, and we’re going to use just one coin. We’re going to work up to four coins here, and it will take you a little bit of practice.

Now as I said, we’re going to start with just the one coin, and just have it placed between your thumb and your pointer finger. Now this might sound crazy, but believe it or not, getting the right position here is not the easiest thing.

So what I would like you to do is place the half-dollar or the quarter, or whatever size coin you’re using, and place it right there and press down. Just keep doing that for a few seconds, and then take that coin and place it as far down between your pointer finger and your middle finger as possible, and press down.

What you’re doing here is you’re strengthening the muscles over time. You’re also building your finger range. You’re going to then go between the middle finger and ring finger, hold it like that.

You want to get it to the point where you can shake hands with someone like this, so that coin will not move. Then we’re also going to finish this little exercise by having the coin between the pinky and the ring finger.

Once again, if you can do this and move around without the coin falling out, you’re good to go. Now once you’ve gotten comfortable with one coin, well, then you can go to the second step, which is with two coins.

Have the two coins between the middle and the pointer finger, and then just peel off with the thumb and open up.

Once you’re able to do two coins, then you can do three. Take all three coins, and have them between the thumb and pointer finger to start. You’re going to then transfer the coins to a middle grip, middle finger grip, and pointer finger grip. You’re going to use your thumb to push over that top coin, that top coin is going to then be wedged between the ring finger and the middle finger.

You’re going to open up, you’re going to take your free thumb, and then move it over like this, open up, you’re going to have a nice little split. Now if you’re able to do three coins, you want to be adventurous, you can then do four.

You’re going to push that coin over all the way and clip it between the pinky and the ring finger. Second step, is taking that third coin and pushing it over between the ring finger and middle finger. You’re going to leave the second to last coin right where it is, and with your thumb, open up like this, and you’ll have a very, very nice display of coins.

Four Coin Flourish is not a magic trick, but it is something that will give your coin magic an added extra flair. Enjoy.

Hello, this is the “Coin through table” trick. Take a look. It’s a real fun trick to do when you’re out at a restaurant.

Just take a coin and find the soft spot in the table by knocking around. Did you know that every table has a soft spot? Bet you didn’t know that. Right there, that’s the soft spot. Ready on the count of three. That’s one, two, three. Did you hear that? Yep. That coin actually went through the table. Let’s take a look. I think we did pretty good.

Some versions use just one coin. This particular effect is going to use two coins. Now, there’s a coin that I have secretly hidden under the table on my left knee. I’m going to put that back on my left knee, so we have that extra coin there. This coin is going to be placed near the edge of the table. Now, like I said, you can do this trick at a restaurant. And at a restaurant, it would make perfect sense for you to have a napkin in your lap, I hope.

So, right here, I have my little net. This net, or your napkin, is going to be able to catch the fall of this coin. Because what you’re going to do is you’re going to take your empty hand and you’re going to move the coin close to the edge. The coin will fall into your lap. At the same time, when that coin falls, you’re going to pick up your hands as if you’re holding that coin. You’re then going to tell your friends that you’re going to find the soft spot in the table by banging your fist against the table. Looking and searching for that soft spot, but really, you have an empty hand.

You’re going to take your empty hand, your left hand, show it completely empty. Go down underneath the table, grabbing the coin on your knee that you placed there before the trick even started. At the same time, above surface and above the table, you’re searching for that soft spot. Say that you found a soft spot right here. You’re going to count to three. One, two, three. When you get to three, you’re going to make a sound underneath the table by slapping the coin to the top of the table underneath. That sound is the effect of the coin going through the table.

At the same time, when you make that sound, you’re going to slap your hand down flat against the top of the table. So, it’s a little bit to work out, but watch. That’s one, two, three. Pause. Then slowly, turn over your hand like a book. Show that the coin has vanished and then seemingly gone through that soft spot you found in the table. Slowly bring your hand back out to reveal the coin on top of your palm and you have a coin miracle.

Here’s a great trick that you can do with a borrowed quarter. All you have to do is borrow a quarter from someone, put it in your hand, and you’re going to show them that you have superhuman strength by rubbing on that coin. Just rub, rub, rub, rub, and push down on the coin, and then, hopefully, you’re able to cause that coin to bend.

Here’s the explanation behind the coin bend magic trick. All you need to do is borrow a coin from a friend and, before you borrow the coin from a friend, you have to make a bent coin up yourself. Here’s a very impromptu way of doing this. Grab a hammer, take a coin, preferably a quarter. Go outside and, the pavement cracks in between the cement, stick the coin in one of those cracks. Take the hammer and hammer down on top of the coin. That coin, as you hammer it, will start to bend in half. It’s a very impromptu way of bending a coin. Now if you have access to a vice, you’re more than welcome to do it that way. Just turn it in the vice. Make sure it’s nice and tight and then hammer it that way. But not everyone has a vice or a work shed, so you can go outside and make it by using the pavement.

Now that you have your bent quarter, you’re ready to start the trick. Place the bent quarter on your middle finger and it will be nice and clipped because of the bend. Show the quarter to your audience. Come in. As you come in front of the coin, you’re going to drop the quarter, but replace it with the bent coin. Like that. And you say that you’re just going to start lightly start brushing the coin with your middle finger, like that. As you do, you can make some sounds as if you’re pushing on the coin, a grunt or whatever you’d like.

When you’re done rubbing, just remove your finger and show that the coin has bent. As a bonus, if you’d like to show your friends that you have some psychic powers, you can then give the illusion that the coin is bending by holding it between your thumb and forefinger. If you push the coin up, it will naturally bow outward. And it’s a perfect illusion, if done right. And I highly recommend practicing it in front of a mirror. As you say the word, “bend, bend, bend, bend,” you push that coin up into view and it will give the illusion the coin is bending even further. I hope you have fun with the coin bend magic trick.

I’m going to show you how to make a coin appear, just using your hands.
Watch one hand. Shown empty, closed, watch. Just give a magical gesture, perhaps a little snap. And look. A coin appears.

It works by a contraction of the muscles in your right hand, or your left hand, if you’re a left hander. The coin is placed at the base of the hand. The muscles are then contracted when you bring your thumb a little closer to the forefinger. Notice how the thumb comes in, the muscle will then go over the coin. From the front, this looks very, very natural. Okay? This is not natural. This is natural. Not natural, natural.

Over time as you practice this, you’ll be able to place your hand down on a table then pick it back up. You’ll be able to then conceal coins without anyone knowing.

For the trick that I just showed you, making a coin up here, all you have to do is show your left hand empty, keeping the concealed coin in your classic palm position, showing the hand empty. As you bring the right hand concealing the coin, over your left hand, you’re going to drop this coin into your left hand as you turn over your left hand and give a tap with the right hand. You can then give a snap, turn the left hand over, and then open to expose the coin. And you have a miracle.

Now, the second variation is a little subtlety, and it’s how I personally prefer to perform it. It’s by showing the left empty, coming over and instead of putting in the fist like this as you’re turning over and then exposing the coin, I prefer to drop the coin like this and then turn over.

A little variation. You pick whatever works for you. So I wish you luck with mastering the classic palm, because it is the basis for all of your coin magic.

Here’s a wonderful coin concealment that you may want to add to your repertoire. It’s called the Downs Palm, popularized by T. Nelson Downs. It looks like this if you want to actually produce a coin, which, I happen to see one right over here. We can pluck it out of the air. The Downs Palm is a palm that utilizes the thumb and the base of the bone for the pointer finger, which is right there. Just have the coin in that position, so if you can get to that position you’re good to go. You should be able to shake hands and the coin will not fall out. From the front this looks very, very natural. You can move your fingers and are free to do what you wish. You could play piano if you like, as long as you keep your thumb and your middle finger together.

You can then show the other side like this. You shouldn’t be able to see the coin in that exchange. Once again from the front, keeping the middle finger and thumb together, move it over, opening. To make the coin appear is very, very simple. You come in with the middle finger. The middle finger goes to the bottom of the half dollar, or quarter, or whatever coin you’re using. The pointer finger comes on top, pulls it out of that thumb crotch position of the Downs Palm, and then the thumb pumps it into view. The Downs Palm can also be used as a vanish. Here’s how it looks, taking the coin and tossing it up into the air. You can make it appear once again by using the Downs Palm.

Here is an exposed view. Having the coin clipped between the middle finger and the pointer finger you’re going to bring that coin slowly in, put the thumb crotch, which is right here, gripping it, releasing your grip as your fingers come out and your hand goes up. The Downs Palm.

Let’s now go over the ‘Back Palm’. Another wonderful coin concealment that you can use to make a coin either appear or disappear, out of thin air.

It looks like this. Let’s make a coin disappear. Taking that coin and, watch, with a wave of the hand, cause that coin to disappear. To make it appear, we reverse the process. Just gonna wave this way, and the coin appears.

What’s going to happen is this half dollar is pivoted between the pinkie and the pointer finger. The two middle fingers, the ring and the middle finger, are going to help pivot that coin. Like that. Now, if I was to move these two fingers out of the way. You can see that I’ve built up enough strength between my pointer finger and my pinkie finger. This comes with just a little practice.

And all you do is grip, pivot and now you’re in the back palm. To make the coin appear, you’re just reversing the process. You’re taking your two middle fingers, right here, and you’re pivoting. Like that. And you can just sit down, watch TV, and work on this. You’ll get it in about ,maybe, a day or so.

To show you that in real time, here’s how it looks. Take the coin. Make a pass with the left hand. As your left hand comes in front of the coin. We’re going to take that coin. We’re going to pivot it into the back palm position. To make the coin appear again, remember, we do it in reverse. We come back around and we’re going to pivot that coin again into view.

And so, that’s a fun appearance or disappearance of a coin, using the ‘Back Palm’.

This is how the back clip looks in performance.

Taking that coin, tossing the coin up in the air by moving the hands up.

Watch.

One, two, three. The coin has vanished.

To make it reappear, one, two, three. Making the coin appear again.

How this works is simple.

Your pointer finger comes around the coin, like that. So just practice keeping your thumb pressed up against the coin and the middle finger, and allow your finger to swivel around that coin. That’s it.

In performance, swivel around, the coin is now clipped behind the hand. To make the coin up here, from that clip, if you were to remove your thumb, you’ll see a little edge to the coin. That’s what you’re going to press on to re-pivot the coin into view. Pretty easy stuff.

This is coin magic.

Parlez vous francais? Oui, oui. Je suis le magicien

And right now, we’re going to show you the tourniquet vanish, or commonly known as the French drop vanish, which is one of the oldest coin vanishes in print. Let’s actually take a look at it here. I’m going to take coin, and we’ll make it vanish. Like that.

The book version tends to teach it like this. The version that I personally prefer, looks like this, where the coin is twisted and vanished. Both have their place. If you’re beginner, I personally would recommend just learning the book version, where you reach in with your thumb, and you’re grabbing the coin. As you grab the coin, the coin drops. At the same time, your right hand turns over, concealing the coin from view. You can then crush your hand and turn it over, then show that the coin has vanished. And then you can pull it out of someone’s ear, or you could pull it out from behind your leg, whichever reappearance of the coin that you prefer.

So once again, your hand comes over. As your fingers go through, the coin is dropped. The coin is then shown to appear in this hand, just by keeping your hand natural. This is not natural. This is natural. If you were to grab a coin normally, you’d just take the coin like that. So try and mimic normal actions, by taking the coin, giving it a little blow, and making it vanish.

A subtlety to the French drop vanish is where you twist the coin right before you drop it into your right hand. This was taught to me by a magician, John Blake, where you take your pointer finger and you swivel the coin, once again right before you drop it. And would be a retention of the eye for the spectators, those who are watching you do this trick. Watch. Just give a little twist. A little blow. The coin vanishes.

Let’s do The Thumb Palm Coin Vanish, right now. All you need is a coin and a hand.

Watch. I’ll just make a couple passes over this coin. And, hopefully, that coin has vanished. Making it reappear is very simple. Voila.

The secret to this vanish is in the title. The Thumb Palm. Which, you’re going to take the coin, essentially, and place it in the thumb palm position. From the front, you cannot see the coin.

Now, how do we actually get into this position? Well, remember the coin is held by the left hand between the thumb and the middle finger. We’re going to come over with the thumb outward, which will catch the coin and clip it between the thumb and the base of the forefinger.

And it will steal that coin away. Like that. But, we’re going to do it in an downward motion. Causing the effect of the coin vanishing.

But, the coin is now just right here in a thumb crotch or thumb palm position.

To make the coin reappear, all you do is you turn your left hand, palm down. Take the pinchers, your pointer finger of the left hand and thumb. They’re going to go underneath the right hand.

At the same time, the coin will be released from the thumb palm position and held between the pointer finger and the thumb of the left hand. The right hand will then make a downward motion, exposing the coin into view. And you have a reappearance of a coin.

And that, my friends, is The Thumb Palm Coin Vanish.

  • Step 1: Hold the coin Hold the coin vertically between your thumb and the side of your index finger. Keep the rest of you fingers closed.
  • Step 2: Drop the coin Drop the coin in the palm of same that’s holding it and lead your audience’s eye away from the trick with a flourish of the other hand.

Transcript

The drop vanish, it’s a great coin vanish. Here’s how it looks. Taking the coin, dropping it into the left hand, and making it disappear. All you need, is a coin, so I happen to have one right here.

The coin, to start this vanish, is held up at the top between your thumb and the top part of the pointer finger in the right hand. The fingers aren’t spread, they’re closed. What is going to happen, you get to do a little bit of acting here, a little bit of mime.

This left hand will never actually contain the coin, the coin is going to be dropped from view. But it’s going to be dropped into the palm of the right hand. With the left hand, mimic as if the coin is dissolving in mid air, and then cause the coin to vanish.

So once again in real time the drop palm vanish looks like this. The coin is shown right there in the hands. Left hand comes in, grabs the coin, and your able to just dissolve that coin into thin air.

Now it’s time for you to learn the tunnel bench. It’s a really quick, simple and easy coin vantage which just uses one coin. Here’s how it looks. The coin is held right there in the hand like that. The hand comes over and pushes the coin farther into the left hand fast. Turn the hand over, give a little squeeze to that coin. You can kind of melt that coin down into nothing and the coin has vanished. Hold the coin in your left hand fist as shown.

Just like that. Keep your other fingers, though, below, open. What’s going to happen is the right hand thumb is going to push that coin farther into the fist. But really what’s going to happen is that coin’s going to be pushed into the right hand as the thumb goes in. So essentially, the coin is stolen from the left hand back into the right hand. Now remember, the audience thinks that the coin is in your left hand.

But really, the coin is secretly concealed in the palms of your right hand. Make a magical gesture with your right hand, perhaps by tapping your left fist. Perhaps by turning it over, making a magical punching gesture. Punching that coin into the abyss.

  • Step 2: Execute the illusion Simultaneously close the palm of your dummy hand while retaining the coin in your original hand, shielding it from the audience.

Transcript

Do you want to learn a great coin vanish? Well, stay tuned. I’m going to teach you one.

It’s known as the retention vanish, probably one of the prettiest coin vanishes you’ll ever actually see. Properly executed you’ll have a gem on your hands.

So let me show it to you right now. All you need is a coin and a hand. Watch, the hand is shown empty, the coin is then placed into the hand. As the hand turns over that coin will actually go up the sleeve. You don’t believe me? It goes up the sleeve, across my body, down the other side, and then comes out right over here. The retention vanish.

This is the work behind the retention vanish. Once again, if you practice this you will have a gem on your hands. It is a retention of the eye, so the audience will see one thing. They will be convinced that they see that coin being placed in your hand. And it works like this.

The second the coin touches down into the palm of the left hand the coin is then retracted back into the right hand. Now normally these fingers would curl over, but here’s an exposed view. Once again, just like that. The coin is being brought back in to the fingers in the right hand. So at full speed it looks like this, without the fingers closing. With the fingers closing it looks like this.

And I personally then take it and I put the coin in a finger clip position. However, you can just hold it. Full time once again. The coin is placed into the left hand, the fingers curl, the coin is retracted back into the right hand. I tend to tug on the sleeve just a bit, and I make a motion with the right finger up my sleeve, across my body and to the other side. The retention vanish. Learn it, live it. You’ll have a gem on your hands, I promise you.

Hey, it’s time to show you a really cool vanish, it’s called the pinch vanish. All you need is a coin and your hand.

The coin is held in the hand like this, the hand comes over, grabs the coin, watch. You can squeeze that coin into oblivion and it’s gone. That’s pinch vanish.

Like a lot of coin vanishes, the secret is in the title. You’re going to pinch the coin and it’s going to then be clipped between the thumb and the pointer finger.

Watch what happens when I pinch the coin. Just by applying a little pressure, downward pressure that coin flips down like that. Now, in performance your left hand will come over momentarily shielding the coin from view. As that happens the coin is pinched, like that. The left hand comes over mimicking taking the coin.

Your audience will then think the coin is here. You then crunch it, mimic, dissolving the coin in thin air and show that the coin has vanished and there you go. You’ve preformed the pinch vanish.

Here’s a wonderful way of making a coin vanish, using either a napkin, or in this tutorial case, a men’s handkerchief. The coin is held in the left hand, whisked over the hand like that, give it a little blow and that coin has vanished.

… I’m going to teach it to you without a silk. As the hand comes over, the point where the silk gets to about here, is when I know that I should drop the coin. I time it to be caught by my right hand. Once again, using the silk this time. As the silk is tossed over, your audience is looking out at you, and I time is just right to drop the coin. I drape it over, I drop the coin. I drape it over, I drop the coin.

Now, with the silk it looks like this. Now, personally, when I make the coin vanish like that, I wrap the silk back up again and that noise is kind of magical. I feel that makes a much cleaner and better vanish.

How to Do the Coin through the Pocket Trick https://howcast.com/videos/499434-how-to-do-the-coin-through-pocket-trick-coin-tricks/ Wed, 25 Jan 2012 14:37:07 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/499434-how-to-do-the-coin-through-pocket-trick-coin-tricks/

This is one of my personal favorite coin tricks, The coin through pocket. Four coins are shown, put into the hand, and then put down into the pocket. Taking a look right here, I think I actually left a hole in it, because you can actually remove a coin, hopefully without any holes.

Now, as you dump the four coins into the left hand, you’re actually going to secretly retain one of the coins in the right hand. The move looks like this. Really three coins. Now, because you’re using more than one coin, you’re covered. No audience member is actually going to have enough time to count the coins in the left hand, because you’re immediately going to take these coins and place them into the pocket.

Now, what goes on over here is, one of the top coins on the stack is going to go into a thumb palm position, which is just by moving one coin up like this, and clipped between the thumb and the base of the forefinger, as you dump the coins.

So once again, placing the thumb on top, turning the hands over, one coin is actually retained in the hand. Three coins then are placed in the pocket. Your audience will think there’s four coins now in your pocket, but secretly remember, you have one coin secretly palmed in thumb palm, right there.

You make a little pass through your pant leg, with your left hand. Pull up on your pant leg, then you’re going to load this coin underneath the fabric by taking the coin, placing it on the fabric, and then peeling the spare fabric around your finger. Then, just slowly pull out the coin that you placed underneath the fabric, and it will look like the coin is melting through your pants. When the coin is revealed, simply open the pant legs like that, and show that there’s no hole.

And that’s how you do the coin through pocket trick.

Here’s a great trick to perform when you’re out and about with friends. It will really blow their mind. Take a look. It’s the coin through hand trick. I’m going to cause this coin to go down through the top of my hand. Now what I have to do is I have to find my soft spot here. Oh, there it is watch. On the count of three, oh. That coin just went through my hand. All you have to do, is have a total of two coins on your person. You can use quarters for this. You can use dimes, you can use dimes, I personally will be using half dollars.

And you have the second coin in a thumb clip or thumb crotch position. Right like that. Turn this hand down, pick up one coin, show it to your friends, angle your hand so that your hand is not like this, but at an angle. Say that you’re going to find your soft spot by tapping the coin on your hand like that. This is the acting part. Then you’re going to count to three, when you get to the number three, you’re going to push the coin that you’re holding like that. Through your fingers. Okay, and when you get to three and that coin is pushed, throw your fingers like that, and your thumb against your hand, your going to drop the coin that’s in the thumb crotch down.

And it will land either in your friends hand if you have them cup their hands underneath your hand, or it will land on a table if you’re just performing on a hard surface. So, once again, the performance on the count of three. One, two, three. And that coin has just gone through your hand. And that’s the explanation behind the coin through hand magic trick.

Did you ever walk past a gumball machine, reach in your pocket, pull out some change and you had everything but a quarter? Well, not to worry anymore because I’m going to show you the penny to quarter trick. Here’s my penny. Watch. Just a little magical pass over that penny, and it changes into a quarter. You’ll never be gumball-less again. … Here’s the secret. You ready? Surprise. There’s two coins. And you thought it was real magic. Hah. Watch. The penny is clipped between the thumb and the pointer finger. The quarter is concealed in the right hand with the thumb pressing the coin up against the other fingers. Held in a very, very natural position.

Your right hand, secretly containing the quarter, will pass over the left hand holding the penny. As the hand comes over the penny, and the thumb touches the penny, the penny will drop into the left hand. Looks like this. Okay? That motion. The penny drops into the left hand. Now in full time, with the hand coming over, it looks like this. The quarter is concealed. The right thumb touches the penny. The penny drops. The quarter is left in its place, as the right hand comes back out, exposing the quarter to your audience. And you have a visual, instant transformation of a penny into a quarter. And that is as close to real magic as you’ll get.

Here’s a great way of making a coin appear out of thin air.

This is thin air and I think I see a coin.

Oh, it’s right in front of me.

Oh, there we go.

That’s a coin from thin air.

All you have to do is have a half dollar secretly concealed in a finger clip position in your right hand. It looks like this.

From the front, if I was to put the coin in that clip, it’ll look like this. Now, hopefully, you cannot see that coin.

But from the back, in the exposed view, you can see the coin as clear as day.

To make the coin appear, from the exposed view, all you do is you take your thumb, you go underneath the coin, and you push up. See how I’m pushing up?

That coin, from the audience view, will look like it pops up.

So that’s how you can produce a coin from thin air.

And remember, this trick has multiple uses. You can produce it from someone’s ear. You can produce it from someone’s nose. You can produce it from… Well, the possibilities are endless. I’ll let you come up with that.

Enjoy.

Alright. This is the Appearing Coin From Handkerchief. Or, if you’re out at a bar, you can also use a cocktail napkin.

Take the handkerchief or the napkin and show completely empty. Both sides, like that. Take your left hand. Put it underneath the handkerchief. Go like this. Give a little shimmy, shimmy, shimmy with the handkerchief. Watch. You can actually produce money.

Start by showing the handkerchief both sides. Front and back. Secretly, in your right hand, hello, I have a coin concealed. Like that.

So, it’s just held in the hand. So, as long as you don’t make a big deal about the coin being in the right hand, no one will know.

Take the handkerchief and drape it over your left hand. Now, you’re going to make this motion towards your audience. As you make this motion towards our audience, you’re going to drop the coin that’s in your hand into the palm of your left hand.

Now, this will not be seen by the audience because of this curve in your hand, that you’re going to make. So, you’re making a nice little well for the coin to be dropped into.

You’re going to, then, drop the coin. That’s the exposed view. You’re going to then come over, like this. Close your hand, your left hand, around the coin. Come back towards yourself. You simply give a little motion with your hand.

A little shimmy if you will. Slowly opening your hand to reveal the coin to your audience. Now, all you have to do is pull the handkerchief and the coin will slide off the handkerchief into your hand. Like that.

And, you’ve just completed the Appearing Coin From Handkerchief.

Not everything that you see or learn in magic is going to be used to fool someone. Some things are known as utility moves. Now, the Change-Over Pass, for instance, is one of those moves.

Where I take a coin and I toss it to the left hand. But, what you see as one coin is really two coins. The Change-Over Pass. Not necessarily a magic trick, but a utility move that you’re going to have to learn in order to continue on with your coin magic.

You secretly have an extra coin in your left hand. This is the coin that’s going to be exchanged for the one in your right hand. But, the audience will only ever really perceive it as one coin.

So, with the coin in the left hand hidden, you’re going to show the coin in the right hand. Now, as your right hand turns over, it’s going to be flipped at the base of the three fingers in your right hand. Like that.

At the same time, the left hand, which conceals the second coin, is going to turn over, revealing its palm coin. So, essentially, it’s a switch. Like I said, not necessarily a magic trick. But, a useful utility.

Now, I told you that the utility pass couldn’t be used as a magic trick. Not necessarily true. You could then, after you do the pass of one coin to the other. You could, then, take that coin and turn it into two by splitting them in half.

But, in my opinion and my experience, the Change-Over Pass is best used as a utility and not a magic trick.

But, that’s why magic is great because you get to be as creative as you want as magicians.

Enjoy the Change-Over Pass.
