Continuing with our groove series, we are going to learn the most basic of grooves, which is pretty much just accenting up.

The two most famous people that I can imagine that do this all the time, are LL Cool J, and Mary J Blige. They do it in their videos. They do it on their shows. Rocking the mic, working the audience. You’ve seen it before, so now let’s do it.

We’re going to start feet apart, knees bent, and just for right now, bounce up. Up, up, up. Good. Up, up, up, up. Nice. So Mary and LL, we’re going to turn to the side a little bit, they use their upper body as well as their knees. You’ve seen Mary. Let’s go down. She comes up, and up, and up, and up. LL uses both. Hop, hop, hop. You can move it to the side. You can walk it. Whatever you want, just make sure your groove is up, up, up, up.

Let’s try it with some music. Hit it. Hit it, DJ.

There you go. Accenting up.

Buenos dias mi gente. We are going to learn how to dance like Shakira. She has so many different styles to her, but the one we most notice are the hips. Right? So we are going to learn one of her more recent movements. So we’re not going to take the hips don’t lie jammy. We’re going to do one of her ones from “Loca” which was more recent for her.

So we’re going to step to the side, bending the left leg slightly, and just perching this right leg either at your toe or on the ball of your foot. Okay. So this way you can sit nice and comfortably. We’re going to focus on the hip. So the hip is going to go down and it’s going to lock in the front. Take it backwards, down, lock in the back. We’re going to do it one more time. Down, lock in the front. Let’s try that again. So we have bending, step, one, two, three, four, five, six, almost there. Okay.

So now, she leans forward so that you can see this even more. Don’t forget the (?) claw, she wolf claw. And hand in the hair. Or you could just place it, whatever, but we’ll do it like this. So you got one, two, three, four, five, six. Now keep that hip up here. Don’t let it drop. Keep it right here where you locked it because you’re going to go down three times. Click, click, click. Okay.

Try that again. We did the last lock. Click, click, click. Good. So you go one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. Hold it back. One, connecting all of those. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. One, you lock it right there.

Let’s try that with music.

There you go and there you have it. Loca, loca, loca.

Hola! So we’re going to take it to the islands, not Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic but more on the Jamaica, Trinidad side. I got my friend, Tech. He’s going to help me demonstrate the Willy Bounce; one of the many dances that come out of Jamaica. Reggae music, island music, island breezes, island water, everything nice and relaxing and anything you could imagine.

So we’re going to start with the feet first. A lot of reggae dances, most reggae dances, are down accents. They’re into the ground because of African influence. So this one is a down accent. You’re going to step with the left foot, one, tap with the right, two, step with the right foot, three, tap with the left and four. Let’s try it again.

Six, seven, eight step down, tap, down, tap, down, tap, down, tap. Now, it’s hard to do this without arms, so let’s try the arms separate from the feet.

So take the right arm, you’re going to pull over and pull, swing down, pull, swing down. Just think fire engine, like the “errr,” “errr”. Boom. Add the bounce a little bit without the feet. Ha, ha and we’re going to add the feet. You go one, two, three, four, five, six try to double it up. You go one, two, three, four, sorry, five, six, seven, eight. I messed up. Let’s do it with music. I forgot about the triple double thing.

Eight. Willy Bounce. Willy Bounce. Willy Bounce. Willy Bounce.

Alright. So got my helper again. Tech is back. We’re going to show you how to do the Bart Simpson. So again, Bart Simpson is one of those dances from back in the day that was named after the popular thing or person of that time. Simpsons were brand new. Bart Simpson was the man, he was the homeboy. So this dance was named after him.

So to start out we are going to go to the legs first. Let’s start with the legs. You’re going to turn your knees, and bend first, turn your knees to the right and you’re going to step to the right. Bring it back left, center, together. Let’s do that again. Right, center, together. Left, center, together. Good! Let’s try that one more time.

We have right, center, together. Left, center, together. Great! So we’re going to add some arms to this. Now your arms, you want to leave your arms behind. So when your knees are going to the right, your arms should be going to the left, okay? So, we’re are going to try that slowly, just the first step. One, now and bring that arm in, two it comes up, good! To the left. Three, bring that arm in, and up four. Again, one and two, three and four. A little faster. Two, three and four. Yes!

Now add the head. You want to look at your elbows, if you see your hands you’re looking the wrong way. Go one and two, three and four, look to the right, look to the left. Let’s try that with music. Slowly first.

Bart Simpson with some sauce y’all.

Transcript

Part Two of the Robot. We’re going to show you how to mess around with the lower body as a robot instead of just the arms and the wrists and the elbows. Right? So there’s other parts of your body to use so we’re going to use them.

We just finished bringing our elbow back down. On eight you’re going to hold one, give yourself some time to sit, hold one. Now, in order to sit like a robot you have options. You can either bend your knees one at a time to sit down or you can use both knees simultaneously to sit. What you want to do is try to stop yourself so that you don’t look like you are in an elevator, but actually an elevator that is stuck on its way down. Okay?

So now, that’s two, you are going to straighten your legs, keeping your upper body stiff so that it tilts forward on three. Yes! Come back to sitting for a second. Now, when you do this, to make your tilt look bigger you can extend your arms; remember using from the shoulder joints to make it bigger. So we’re going to try that on three.

Both. And just stand up. Just lift your back, keeping your upper body stiff so that it all comes up together on four, bringing the arms in. Boom. Let’s try that together from the sit.

So we hold one, we’re down two, lean forward three, back up four. And you can play around with anything you just learned, five, six, seven, eight. Let’s try that with music.

Transcript

All right, so keeping it on the New Jersey side of things, we’re going to break this up into two parts. So part one, we’re going to do the sexy walk. The first part, let’s start with just the legs. Okay. This is most of the dance.

Right, so you’re going to step forward with your right foot and turn your knee out. Step back and do the same thing on the other side. Okay. So you’re going to go in, out, in, out, in, out, in, out. A little faster, in out, a little faster, in, out.

Now, notice my knees are staying bent, okay, because club music is fast. So if you did this straight, you’d be a little stuck. So stay down, boom, boom, boom. And I suggest staying on the balls of your feet; it will help you move faster because you’ll be lighter. Okay?

So legs again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Just imagine doing like a funky chicken with a step up and back. Up and back, you’ve got to keep those legs flapping.

Arms just kind of go opposite. So you go right leg, left arm, pull, pull, pull, pull. Think like you’re elbowing somebody. Put it there, there, there. You can even pull up, up, up, up. Okay? Stay nice and low. Right?

Second part of this dance, of Video One, are rock my hips. You’re going to hear that in the song. She goes, “Watch me rock my hips.” And, you have dip, dip, dip, lean forward. Okay?

So you’ve got one, two, three, four, again, five, six, seven, eight. Other side, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. All together, five, six, seven, eight. Boom, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Again, one, two, three, four, again, five, six, seven. Hips, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Switch, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Switch. Let’s try it with music.

Okay. So we’re going to talk a little bit about having confidence on the dance floor, either while you’re already out there or the confidence to get yourself out onto the dance floor. Okay? And it’s a very simple concept to say, it’s a little harder to do because it’s more internal than anything else. You have to tell yourself that whatever you choose to do is the thing that should be done. Very easy to say. Very, a little harder to do though.

So if you ladies or gentlemen, if you choose that your Two Step is your prize winning performance then you stick with that Two Step and you do whatever you do to feel good about this Two Step. The second you feel good about what you’re doing, you’re going to look good while you’re doing it, okay?

So we’re going to party around a little bit when the music comes on and all three of us, my two friends, Tech and Tom, they’re going to come in and do whatever they do that makes them feel good and I’m going to do the same thing. So hit it!

Hey! Hey! Ha! Shake your booty! Oh that’s not it? Sandwich! Just have confidence y’all.

Hey everybody, I’m Charlene, also known as “Chi-Chi.” I’ve been dancing for about, almost 7 years now. I’ve danced for Salt n’ Pepa, Shakira, LL Cool J, Mary J. Bilge, Snoop, Diddy. I got into dancing after college. I went to Rutger’s University and I graduated. And the only thing I knew is I wanted to try dancing. Didn’t really know that people do it for a living. So I dedicated one day a week to something towards my creative career and ended up in a dance class. Which led to a rehearsal, which led to a show, which led to work steadily for the past nearly 7 years. I do a lot of television, which I love, and I also love to teach. I teach in Canada, I teach all over New Jersey, I teach in New York, I teach in Mexico, and soon I teach in the Dominican Republic. And I just love sharing my gift with the rest of the world who shares that love, whether they do it professionally or not. And that’s me. If you want to keep up with me, you can follow me on Twitter at dancechi or check me out on Facebook, facebook.com/itsmechichi, one word.

[music] You guys have seen this dance all over YouTube, and I’m pretty sure you are going to recognize it once you try it. We’re going to do the SpongeBob. Don’t ask me why it’s called that. I don’t remember.

SpongeBob has a couple of different ways, variations to do it. None of them necessarily wrong, just different. I do mine accenting in, and I start with the leg kicking out.

So, right leg, your left, my right. Whatever. One, two. These are the feet, because SpongeBob is mostly all feet. Again, kick out, same foot, in. Six, seven, eight. Kick out, in. When I kick out, I kick a little bit to an angle. Not necessarily side or front, but angling. You’ll see why in a second. Out, in.

Now when you bring your foot in, you’re going to hop on your left foot. One, two. Let’s try it on the other side. Left, in. Left, in. Let’s try it with the hop on the left side. One, two.

To switch to the next side, you’re going to plant this foot. Just hop to the other leg. Boom. In, boom, in, boom, in. Keep your knees soft. You don’t want to land on a straight leg. You’ll feel crazy. You feel crazy, you look crazy.

It gets faster. Boom, dah, dah, dah, dah. As you get faster, you’re going to hop every time. Hop, hop, hop. Five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, it gets even faster. One, and two, and three, and four, and five, six, seven, eight.

Let’s try it with music. [music]

Baltimore club music. New Jersey club music. Philly club music. So Giddy Up he calls it. Your feet are going left, right, left, right, left, right the entire time. It’s faster but let’s get this first. Da. Da. Da. Da. You can get your knees. Act something out. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. You can do it to the side. Da. Da. Da. Okay.

Tech and I are going to show it together. We’re going to start with the feet. You are hopping but it is a little hard to hop in slow motion so we will demonstrate it as slow as we can. So, left foot, you’re going to hop on to your left foot. One, tap the right and hop over to the right foot. Two, tap and, try it again. Three, tap and four, tap and again, five, and, six, and, seven, and, eight, and.

Now, we are partially doing the arms already, even though we said we will only do the feet, it is just really hard to move without your arms, which is why we walk using arms and feet, right? Pedestrian move, so we have opposite arms; it is kind of led more by your shoulders so let us actually try it with just the upper body; boom. Swim. We have Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, if they were to have a dance together this would be it, okay? You want to swim up here to the islands, right? Let’s try it adding the feet.

We’re taking you back to the island, island breeze, island everything. We’re going to show you how to do the Butterfly. Not the swim technique, but the dance, okay?

You’re going to start with your feet a little bit wider than your shoulders. You’re going to bend your knees, because the motion of the Butterfly, your knees go in, and then they come out. They go in, and then they come out. In, out, in, out.

Now, there’s always a waist involved, when it comes to reggae. So, especially since the Butterfly was always done nice and slow, you want to try to wind your waist, which is just taking it in a circle. I’m going to go clockwise, it’s the way I like. So, you have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

You can use your arms, if you want. You can hold them up. You can do one leg, same motion, or keep it to two. And the Butterfly used to move.

Let’s try some music.

Okay. So Miss Shakira, Miss “hips don’t lie,” brought us an updated version of Waka Waka, which was the World Cup song for 2010. And I am going to show you how to do the chorus of Waka Waka.

So let’s focus on the feet first, because she’s super specific. So I want to do the same thing for the dance. Okay? You’re going to step up starting with your right leg. One, step up, left foot, two, step back, three, four, and take tiny steps in your spot. Okay? So you have six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, in your spot, six, seven, eight. You repeat it. Two, three, four, in your spot, six, seven, eight. Okay? So now, of course, there’s a waist involved, and of course there’s arms involved. We’re going to get there.

So let’s add the waist a little, with the arms, because it’s a little hard to separate them. So hands are placed here, like you’re praying, just lower. Okay? You’re going to move your arms from side-to-side the first four counts. So you’re going arms only, two, three, four. Again. Six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six. Your chest pushes up. And I’ll show you from the side, twice. Five, six, so it’s hitting your hands out, out.

Let’s try that with the feet so far. Six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, and seven, eight. Seven, eight. Okay, just getting your audience up. We have five, six, seven, eight. Tsamina mina eh eh. Waka Waka eh eh. Let’s try it again. Five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, repeat. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

Before we deal with music, your waist just goes with your arms, and with your legs. Boom, boom, boom, boom. Boom, boom, boom, boom.

Let’s put that with music.

There you go. You can dance along with her, next time.

So we’re going to start off, very basic version. We’re going to start off with our right foot. We’re going to just take it to our toe. One. We’re going to turn this knee out, and we’re going to lean on this leg. And. And now, you’re going to press your heel, your right heel into the floor sliding the left foot back. Two.

Let’s try that again slowly. Six, seven, eight. One and two. Good. Seven, eight. One and two. Nice.

Now, if you wanted to keep going you can take your heel to do one and two, all over again. Let’s try that again. One and two.

Let’s move over so we don’t lose Tom. We have a little bit faster. We’ll just do two in a row. Six, seven, eight. One and two, one and two. Nice.

Let’s try that with music.

Beginner gliding.

Alright. So we have Cupid Shuffle brought to us by none other than singer Cupid.

You’re going to find this dance, again, barbecues, weddings, cruise ships. People love line dancing because nobody’s singled out, right? Everybody wants to be part of a group.

So we have, starting with the right foot, going to the right. Just listen to the song, he tells you everything to do. Right foot goes: right, left, right, left, right, left, right. Going to the left you got: left, right, left, right, left, right, left. Let’s try that with counts. We have six, seven, eight. One and two and three and four. To the left: and six and seven, and eight.

Next, you’re going to hear him tell you to kick. Start with the right foot: Kick. Kick. Kick. Kick. Let’s try it from the beginning. Five, six, seven, eight. One and two and three and four. Five and six and seven and eight. Kick. One and two and three and four. The last part, “when you walk it by yourself now walk it by yourself.” you’re turning, switching direction to start it all over. You want to step and twist. Step, step, step, step, step. Remember to always keep your knees bent. Okay, let’s try that from the beginning.

Five, six, seven, eight. Right, to the right, to the right, to the right. Keep flavor in your arms and body and… eight… now kick, now kick, now kick, now kick. You can add some sauce here hip, hip, hip and boom! Okay. Let’s try that with music. I think you’re ready.

There you have it. Cupid Shuffle, everybody. Have fun.

Alright. So. As you can see from our beginning pose, we’re going into something slightly different. We are continuing with the different grooves of hip hop. This one is drop. We’re going to show you something that’s often done in locking called Leo Walks.

Soft knees, always. You’re going to lift up your right leg like you want to step over something big. And step down and then scoop. Same thing on the other side. Up, down, scoop. Up, down, scoop. Up, down, scoop. Up, down, scoop. Up, down, scoop. Yes.

So now, up down scoop aren’t necessarily all of the grooves. Up is just the leg. Down is just the leg. Okay? So so far really you groove up, and then the drop comes in, the surprise, because you don’t suspect it. Okay? Sp that’s really what makes a drop groove a drop groove.

So we have five, six, seven, eight. One and two, three and four, five and six, seven and eight. And Tec’s arms are natural. Boom. Like he’s walking or like he’s running. Okay?

Let’s try it with music.

There you go. Leo Walks.

So, made famous by the Rej3ctz who had Chris Brown in their video doing the Cat Daddy. Do you guys know what it is already? It’s all over YouTube. It’s all over your video channels. We’re going to break it down for you right here right now.

You’re going to take your right arm. You’re going to punch across your upper body. When you punch, boom, you want to lean to the left, boom. I use my heels a little bit, boom. Leaning to the left, punching with the right arm. One. Same thing on the other side. Two.

Now, the instructions go move your arms like your wheelchair’s stuck. We’re going to go one, two. You’re going to drop. Three. You drop again. Four.

To do it on the other side. One, two, three, four. Let’s try it, a little piecing it together. So we have right arm, left arm, double, drop. Left arm, right arm, double, drop.

Now, your own flavor changes it a little bit. I don’t do the double drop. I like to do a little one, two, three, four. I like to come up on my last one. It helps for old knees. So, we have six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.

Let’s get it with music. Throw in your own little salt and pepper in there.

And there you have it. Cat Daddy.

How to Do the Smurf Hip-Hop Dance https://howcast.com/videos/505186-how-to-do-the-smurf-hip-hop-dancing/ Wed, 15 Aug 2012 21:12:05 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/505186-how-to-do-the-smurf-hip-hop-dancing/

Transcript

We are bringing you the Smurf, today. Not the la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la. Not that Smurf. Dance move the Smurf.

We don’t see it too often, but it has a very familiar groove. Groove, you say? Is that what I said? Groove? This is part of our groove series. Up, down, bounce, and drop. We are doing the Smurf with the down groove, because you can always change any dance you want to a different groove. We’re going to do it down.

Let’s relax our knees. We’re going to start our knees bent about shoulder width apart. Wherever you’re comfortable. If you’re too close it’s a little hard to move that way. You’re going to bounce, accenting down. You’re going to go down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down. This is the essence of any down groove, no matter where it goes. No matter where it moves. Hey, I’m going to be a rapper when I grow up, down, down, down, down.

Now, Smurf uses arms. You can do anything you want with any down groove. Smurf has arms. We want to use them kind of like we’re swimming. Side-to-side, though. You’ll go left and right more than forward.

Starting with the right arm, down, down, down, down, twist the arms. Down, down, down, you’ll keep connecting all the moves. So it’s one nice groove. Ha, down, down, down. Kool Moe D does this dance. He goes, ‘I used to live downtown, one twenty ninth street,’ ha.

Let’s try it with some music, DJ.

There you have it, y’all. Hit the Smurf. Hit the Smurf.

Hey everybody! So I got a new friend and his name is Tom and he’s my personal human robot. Tom and I are going to guide you through some steps in learning how to control your body for the Robot.

First we are going to start off by relaxing every muscle in your body. Just shake it all off. This is to get you ready for step one, which is to tense up every muscle in your body, which means make a muscle from head to toe. That is awesome.

So we’re going to try moving the arms first. You’re going to take the right arm up down, nice and slowly. Left arm, up, down. Also keep in mind that your arms are moving from your shoulders. Play around with that a little bit. Watch Tom, bang, bang, yep, straight from his shoulders. Awesome.

Let’s play with isolations in the wrist a little bit. So let’s move the right wrist, then the left. Now we’ll move both of them together. Nice.

Now, playing around with the elbows a little bit. You can use your elbows to take your arm higher and even lower. Nice. Let’s try that from the beginning. Relax. And we got tense up. One, two, three, four, four right wrist, five, six left wrist, seven, eight together. One, two elbow three, four, five, six back down, seven and eight. Awesome.

Let us take it that much with music.

How to Do the Robocop Hip-Hop Dance https://howcast.com/videos/505185-how-to-do-the-robocop-hip-hop-dancing/ Wed, 15 Aug 2012 21:12:05 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/505185-how-to-do-the-robocop-hip-hop-dancing/

So some of you might remember the movie RoboCop. Well if you do, if you don’t, this dance was named after him. So RoboCop is mostly upper body, but it gets a little flavorful down here, too.

So we’ll start with the arms first. So you want to make a nice box with your arms. Let’s start them here. Bend your knees. Now, just the arms. You’re going to tilt a little, and you’re going to straighten. Tilt, straighten, tilt, straighten, tilt, straighten.

That’s the essence of the move. Okay? There’s other things involved. So you are soft knees. You’re going to go one. When you straighten, you’re going to bring your arms and your shoulder both up. Two, three, same thing on the other side, four, five, six, seven, eight. Okay? So that’s most of the upper body.

Now, let’s try that again. Six, seven, eight, and one, and two, and three, and four. You can double it up. Single, single, double up, single, single, double up. Okay? You always want to make sure you return to this box.

Now, if you want to add some sauce you can go, same level up. Boom, boom, down, you can move feet and go with it. Boom, boom, boom, boom. You want the feet? You just go it. Right, left, right left, right. Keep the knees bent. Left, right, left. Okay? That’s if you want to add the feet.

Right now, we should go, and, one and two, double up this side, three, double up that side.

Let’s try it with music.

RoboCop.
