How to Do the Sumo Dance Dip

Transcript

Ashley: Hey guys it’s Ashley and Henry and right now we’re going to teach you a dance that is called the Sumo.

Henry: The Sumo Dip, right.

Ashley: So this one comes with a warning, be ready.

Henry: To demostrate the Sumo Dip for you we’re going to use as a base dance, the salsa. But you can do it in other styles. So we are going to do a basic step. One, two, three, five, six, seven. You go away. One, two three, and five, six, seven. One, two, three, and five, six, seven. Show one more time. And one, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven. Good?

Ashley: Now we’ll break it down.

Henry: Now we’ll break it down. So let’s break it down, just the simple concept of that and then we add the basics of a salsa. So basically guys what we do is. If you are close to your partner all you really want to do is literally pass her, but you keep holding her back, so you will pass right behind her. What happens is she has no other option but that square.

Ashley: You have to.

Henry: What we do here guys is you open your legs slightly. Let me show you up front so you can see, sorry. See the angle? Here guys when you do this you want to open your legs slightly, in what’s called second position, so then her legs can rest on your leg. From here you bring her back up and to the other side. To your right side to be specific. So let’s show them one more time. Let’s pretend that we are dancing slow. And then I just go past the lady, and Sumo Dip her, and bring her back up, and we continue dancing in this style. Right?

Ashley: Girls, basically, you are going to feel like you are being clothes lined by the guy and technically you are. But the same rules are going to apply with our basic dips and you don’t throw your body in to him. So don’t just collapse as you feel him. Say “Okay, he is taking me into a dip.” You still want to wait until you really feel that he has you, and you are going to stay here. So now you can see that my back is supported by his knee and I barely have any weight on my legs. So just don’t throw yourself into him. You say, “Okay, he’s coming up now what’s going to happen?”, just go with it. Just let him take you down.

Henry: Yes, pulling your center up and then the guys have fun with it. So now let’s put it with the salsa stepping, okay? Which is going to be really fun. So you use the basic step; one, two, three, five, six, seven. Count number one you go away from the lady. One, two, when I count number two you’re already charging towards her, to the dip. So I grab the lady and then you do the dip and right away you bring her back up and continue to your basic step in salsa. Let’s demonstrate it one more time. Here it goes, basic. And one, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven, and one. Now you can do this step slow or sharp. We’re doing it sharp because it’s salsa, but maybe you are doing zoot you can take your time and go up slow. We can demonstrate as slow, we’ll do both versions with the music. Let’s do it. Five, six, seven, and one, two, three, five, six, seven. One, two, three, five, six, seven. Open it, five, six, seven, one, two, five, six, seven, one. Let’s do it one more time. Five, six, seven, and one, two. And we are in one, two, five, six, seven. One, five, six, seven, one. Now let’s do some more. And one, two, five. One, five, six, seven, and one. Five, six, seven, and one. And that was your…

Ashley: Sumo Dip.

Henry: Sumo.
