How to Do a Vine Action in Line Dancing

Transcript

Hi, my name is Robert Royston. I’m a five time world champion of country dance working with artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley. I really hope you learn how to line dance and experience what it’s like to move to America’s music and that’s country music. Line Dancing: Vine Actions: The Grapevine. The Grapevine is kinda the cornerstone of line dancing and there’s a lot of different variations or things that live in the Grapevine family and we’re going to talk about them right now. So a basic Grapevine is side, then usually behind but sometimes in front, behind then side, then in front, then side and it continues on forever. You can go back the other way, side, in front, side, behind, side, right? So you can start either way you want. I’ll do it sideways. The idea behind the Grapevine is we’re just vineing our feet, one foot goes in front, then that foot goes behind the next go-round. So I go side, I can go in front or behind first, let’s go behind first, behind, side, in front, side. So we’re vineing our feet. Side, behind, side, in front, side, behind or side, in front, side, behind, side, in front. That would be a Grapevine. So another type of vine feeling is something we call a lock step. So, a lock step goes forward and back but you are still kind of hooking or vineing your foot around another foot. So you step forward, forward, taking this foot behind, right that’s a lock step. Forward, behind, boom is a lock step. If you wanted to do that on the other side you’d go forward, lock then take two steps, forward, forward and then lock the other foot, lock. That’s a back locking step. You take a forward locking step or a front locking step by going back and locking in front, going back, locking in front. Taking two steps back, back and switch legs to the other lock in front. So we have a lock behind or a lock in front. That’s kinda still a vineing action with our feet. So we have Grapevine’s side to side and locking steps forward and back. Another type of vine effect would be our jazz box. So jazz box, you’re going to cross one foot over, cross over so like you’re starting a vine but now go back, go back, go side and then cross your right foot over, cross over and then all the way back over again. So we’re doing the jazz box where we’re constant kind of vineing or crossing one foot over the other action, right, as we do our jazz box. So the vine action, grapevines, locking steps, jazz boxes all very important to core line dance elements. Just so you know sometimes you’ll hear line, in line dance terminology you’ll hear grapevines called weaves. Same type of thing, so we just weave our feet as we go, yeah. So we have grapevines, locking steps both back and forward and jazz boxes. All vine or weave type elements used in line dancing.
