Muting strings is the process of dampening strings, and then playing them. We usually do it with our palm on the strings near the bridge. It can be a really effective technique. You can start by just playing open strings. It is not that necessarily important to be muting all the strings all at the same time. You can just be muting the string that you are playing, and that will do fine. So if you palm mute the strings, you can play with your thumb, or you can play with your fingers the way we have been talking about so far. And that is the basics for muting on the electric bass.
