How to Play Blues in Fingerstyle Guitar

Transcript

Finger style blues guitar. Well, finger style blues guitar is a little bit more simpler than the Chet Atkins/Merle Travis. Usually the thumb is playing a drone note underneath. So I’m gonna use the low E string as a drone. I’m just gonna keep the beat, basically, with my thumb. And then on
top of that, I’ll play some other notes.

Now to get a blues sound, one really good thing to do is think about the scale that you’re playing. In other words the choice of notes. So, and then I’m also doing slight little bends. Things like that really help. So let’s talk about the scale. I’m using basically an E blues scale, or an E minor
pentatonic scale. The notes would be E, G, A, B flat, B, D, E, G, A, B flat, B, D, E. and then I can play another G up here like this. So that covers the whole range that I can play in first position, and that’s actually quite a bit of notes. So if I’m droning on the low E string. I can play any notes in that scale.

Blues is really fun to play.
