So we’ve been talking about moving from one chord to the other using base notes, right? We’ve been using our four chords G, Em, C and D. But now let’s talk about once you get there what you can do to the chord. So, when I was a kid I can do somebody fooling around with D, right? All I heard them do is put down their pinky here. You know, maybe I saw that on TV or I heard that on recording you know. I saw then put down their pinky there in the middle of the strum. So I said, ‘wow’ that’s beautiful. I have to be able to use that, you know. So I practice like crazy on just that one chord. Right. Then I saw somebody else do something with D were they lifted up their middle finger so you can do that too, right? So or maybe a combination of both. Right? So, now let me try to put that into our little pattern, right? G, Em, C, and D, right? And when I get to D I’m just gonna sort of fool around with it. Anything that comes to mind, right? Do I go G, E Minor, and C and then D. I’d say how much more interesting now our song has become. Now, of course D is not the only one I could do that to. You could do that to C, right? For C to fool around with we can put our pinky right here on the fourth string, third Fret. So, right. Interesting sound and then I let go. Back to normal, right? So how about if I do all the strum. Down. Right. Down, down, down, up, up, down, right? So, let’s put that in our pattern, right? When I get to C. When I fool around. When I get to D, I’m gonna fool around right? So I have G, E Minor, C this time I’m gonna fool around with it and then D. How about if I put some of the bass notes. Right? Playing with C. Right. See how much interesting that could be. So that’s a nice way of playing around with the chords.

E minor 7 is next and, I know it sounds funny but we’re going to use an E minor 7 shape to make and E minor 7 barre chord- It’s possible. I’m taking my E minor 7 shape, that’s an open chord, and I’m just going to flip that around so I have my 1st finger a little more comfortable, and in this case I have to travel all the way up to the 12th fret, (the double dots). I’m barring the 12th fret, I’m making my minor 7 shape, So this is E minor 7 as a barre chord. And then I can do the same thing with A minor 7. Here’s the shape here, I’m going to change it so that my 2nd and 3rd fingers are playing the 2 notes that I need, and I’m gonna move that up the the 7th fret- So my barre is at the 7th, I’m making what looks like an E minor shape, but now its E minor 7 as a barre chord.

Okay, so now we come to the 7th chords. Dominant 7 or 7, same thing. And this time, instead of using E major or E minor, well we gotta use E7, right? So here was the original E7 shape and how I made that is my 1st finger is on the 3rd string, 1st fret, right? And my 2nd finger is on the 5th string, 2nd fret. There’s E7. So I’m just gonna move that around so I have my 1st finger free. And now I wanna make A7 so I take that and I’m gonna bring it to the 5th fret ‚Äì that’s where A is; here’s my 7. So, A7, then barre chord. Now, that’s just using the E shape. I can also use the A shape so I know that sounds weird ‚Äì I’m using A7 to make an A7 barre chord. That’s okay, we’re just going over every possibility here right? So, so this is how I can make A7 ‚Äì I’m taking my 1st finger and I’m putting it on the 4th string, 2nd fret. And I’m taking my 2nd finger and I’m putting it on the 2nd string, 2nd fret. That’s how I originally made A7 as an open chord, right? Again, I gotta switch it around so I have my 1st finger free so you could see, all I did was change which fingers I use. In this case, I’m gonna use my third finger and my pinky. And then, I gotta find A and A is all the way up here at the 12th fret. That’s where the guitar starts again. So, here it is ‚Äì I have my barre at the 12th fret, I have what looks like A7 here, so this is A7 barre chord. So A7 is a barre chord using the E shape, A7 is a barre chord using the A shape.

OK let’s talk about G7. You know G7 we’ve played as an open chord, but you can also make that as a barre chord. And how you do that is you take an E7 shape, switch it around so you have your first finger free, and in this case we’re going to move it to the 3rd fret. And now we’ve made G7 as a barre chord. Then we can also take A7, right, and switch that around a little bit so that I can get the barre involved. And I’m going to take that all the way to the 10th fret. SO here we are, I have my barre at the 10th, what looks like an A7 chord, but now it’s G7. G7 as a barre chord.

OK so here we are B Minor 7. What we’re going to do is we’re going to take E Minor 7 shape, right? Usually I make it with my 2nd finger, but in order to make B Minor 7 I’m going to use my ring finger. All right? And here we go, I’m going to move it all the way to the 7th fret. So here I am at the 7th fret with the barre. Just 1 finger here to make the Minor 7 shape. And this is B Minor 7. And then I can do the same thing with an A Minor shape, or the form. I can take it and move it around so I have my first finger free. I’m going to move that to the 2nd fret. So 2nd fret, A Minor form. So this is B Minor 7 as a barre chord.

G major 7 you can play as an open chords but what we were doing here is talking about barre chords so it’s the same concept as before. We going to take the E major 7 shape a just that so I have my first finger free in order to barre and in this case I’m going to move it to the 3rd fret that’s where G is, so I have G and here is my major 7 shape, so G major 7 as a barre code. And then what we can also do is A form of that right, the A style so I’m taking my A major 7 shape right I’m just adjusting that so my first finger is free and then I’m going to move that all the way up to 10th fret that’s where G is for the A style. And so what do I have, I have G and the major 7 shape. G major 7 as the barre code.

Okay, next is E7. E7 is already an open chord and we’ve been using it to make other shapes, but it’s still possible to make this into a bar chord. So I take E7, switch around my fingers so I have my first finger free, move that all the way up to the twelfth fret, that’s where the guitar starts again. So here we are, E7. [strums guitar] And then I can take A7, switch that around so I have my first finger free, and move that up to the seventh fret, that’s where E is on the first string. And here we are, here’s the bar at the seventh, an A7 shape. [strums guitar] E7 as a barre chord.

And in this case I’m going to move it all the way up here to the eighth fret. So my barre is at the eighth fret, I have what looks like an E minor 7 chord, but now we turned it into C minor 7.

Then we can also do that with an A minor shape. All right, so here’s A minor 7 – just switching it around so I have my first finger free. And I’m just going to move it right on up to C, here at the third fret. So this is C minor 7 as a barre chord.”

Okay. Lets talk about barre chords and how to find any barre code you want. Now, there is many ways to do this, but we’re going to use a couple of ways, right now. And the first way is going to be with the E shapes. So, what does that mean. I’m taking every form of E that we know. So, we have E major, E minor,E seven, E minor seven, and also E major seven. And I can use that to make any chord I want, right. So, lets talk about makeing G sharp minor seven. Okay, I just think of the craziest one I can, right. So, what am I going to do? I’m going to find G sharp. So, here’s E, right. We know that E and F is only one fret apart. We know that F to G is two frets. And one more makes G sharp. So, there I found G sharp. And now I’am going to use the minor seven shape. If you remember that’s only one finger. And there you go, G sharp minor seven. Lets find B flat major seven. So, here’s my E, right. Here’s my F. Here’s my G. A, B now we need B flat, right, so I’m just going to flatten this note meaning I lower it one fret. And then if you remember our major seven shape, our E major seven shape. I use that and there you go. There’s B flat major seven. After a while you get to remember where they all are and it becomes easier and easier. At first, when I was a kid I had to do the same thing. I had to start, okay, where’s B flat? Okay, E, F, G, A, B flat major seven, but you’ll get it. That’s how you can make any barre code with the E shapes.

F minus 7 is a bar code we are going to use the same tools that we used before. We going to take E minor 7 had to flip that around a bit, so I have my first finger little more comfortable and just I’m going to move that 1 fret to the 1st fret. So here is F and here is my minor 7 string. Now I have the F minor 7 then I can do the same thing with the A minor 7 the form of it, right. I’m going to switch that around so I have my first finger free and I’m going to move that all the way up to the 8th fret so my bars at the 8th I have a A minor 7 form here but we turned this cord into F minor 7 that’s the barre chord.

F Major 7 as a barre chord. Just like before what we’re going to do is take E Major 7 the shape, and we’re just going to adjust that so I have my 1st finger free. And this time it’s very simple, we’re just going to move it to the 1st fret. So here’s F, here’s my Major 7 shape, and there you go ‚Äì F Major 7 as a barre chord. The next way we can do it is as an A form, or A shape. All right? So I’m taking my Major 7 shape here, just adjusting it so I have my 1st finger free, and then I’m going to move that all the way up to the 8th fret ‚Äì that’s also where F is. So, B Major 7 as a Barre chord. Very simple. We gonna take E Major 7, the shape. Just turn it around just so my first finger is free because that’s what we need to use this as a bar and I’m gonna move that to the 7th Fret. So here’s my bar at the 7th. I have what look like AM7 but now we turned it to B Major 7 and then I can do the same thing with the A form, right. Here’s my original A chord. “We’re going to talk about A Major 7 as a barre chord. First, what we should do is talk about the shapes that I’m going to use, in order to make A Major 7 as a barre chord. I’m going to use an E Major 7 shape and an A Major 7 shape, in order to make A Major 7 as a barre chord. How do I do that? For E Major 7 shape, I’m going to take my 1st finger and I’m going to put it on the 4th string 1st fret. Then I’m going to take my 2nd finger and I’m going to put it on the 1st fret, but on the 3rd string. And then, my 3rd finger I’m going to put all the way up here on the 5th string 2nd fret. It’s a little awkward. But that is the shape. E Major 7, very jazzy sound, right. Now, in order to make a barre chord out of that, I have to adjust my fingers so my 1st finger is free. Right? So, I’m just going to switch around my fingers a little bit, and get my 1st finger free, look how I do that. Now, I’m going to bring that shape all the way up to A, which again here is at the 5th fret. And so, here you go. A Major 7 as a barre chord.

Then you can also use the A form of that to make A Major 7. This is the shape here. And what we’re going to do is you’re going to but your 1st finger on the 3rd string 1st fret, and then your 2nd finger on the 4th string 2nd fret, and then your ring finger is going to go on the 2nd string 2nd fret. A Major 7, all right. Again, I just going to switch that around so I have my 1st finger free and so look how I did that. First, like that, then I just switch it around so that this finger is free. Now, in this case, we already have A Major 7 but just to prove that it can be a barre chord, we’re going to go all the way to the 12th fret. That’s where the guitar starts again, make that shape. A Major 7 as a barre chord.”

In order to play minor 7 barre chords, we should know A minor 7, the shape, and the E minor 7 shape. Both as open chords, right, so we’re gonna, the idea is we’re gonna take those open chord shapes and move them around to learn all the other shapes. RIght. Ok, so how do you make E minor 7? It’s just one finger. I’m taking my second finger and I’m gonna put that on the fifth string, second fret. That’s it. That’s E minor 7. Right. Then for A minor 7, it looks very much like A minor, but this time I’m going to put my first finger on the second string, first fret. And then my second finger on the fourth string, second fret. There’s A minor 7. That’s what we’re going to do – we’re going to use these two shapes to make all of the other barre chords for minor 7. Here’s E minor 7. Alright, and I’m going to move that to the fifth fret. That’s where A is. So here’s A and what I have here is a minor 7 shape. SO you can see I’m just using my ring finger to play one note there. Alright, so here is A minor 7 as a barre chord. Now for the A type. So now I’m just adjusting so I can get my first finger to play the barre. And in this case I still want to make A minor 7. So all that means is I’m going to play it at the twelfth fret. That’s where the guitar starts again. So here it is. Here’s my barre at A, what looks like an A minor 7 shape, and it’s still A minor 7.

My finger’s free so I can barre and I’m making that at the 7th fret. So my barre is at the 7th, I have E7 down, but now this is B7. And then I can also do that with my A7 chord. I’m taking A and I’m moving to the 2nd fret. So here’s the barre at the 2nd, what looks like an A7 chord but now it’s B7. That’s how you make B7 as a barre chord.

“So we’ve already found the E shapes of all the barre chords. Now, lets find the A shapes of all the barre chords. So, what does that require? Well, that, if you remember here’s our A open chord, A major, right. Here’s A minor. Here’s A seven. Here’s A major seven, A minor seven. So, we already know those, right. But now we can move those to make any chord we want. So, let’s try to make C sharp minor seven. Okay, so, what am I going to do? I’m going to find C sharp. To use it on the A, right, I have to use the A string. That makes sense, right. So, here’s A. We know that B is two frets away. We know that C is one more. And now here’s C sharp, right. A C sharp raises a note one fret. And now all I have to do is remember my minor seven shape, right. So here it is this used to be A minor seven down there, right. So, I’m at C sharp. I use my minor seven shape. Here’s C sharp minor seven as a barre code. Lets find E flat major seven. Okay, so, here’s A, here’s B, here’s C, here’s D, here’s E. If you remember E flat we’re going to lower one fret. So, I back that up one fret. I just have to remember my major seven shape. There it is E flat major seven. • Step 2: The second way is to take the A major form and move it to the 2nd fret.

Transcript

B Major can be played 2 ways also. Here’s the E Major style. Right so I’m taking E major and I’m going to bring it all the way over here to the 7th fret. And I’m going to place the barre. And here’s B Major as an E type. All right. And then as an A type, I’m going to take A and I’m moving it to the 2nd fret. So again I can use these 3 fingers, or I can just use 1 finger. It’s up to you, there’s really no right way to do it. And that’s it, B Major.

How to Play a G Minor Barre Chord on Guitar https://howcast.com/videos/434439-how-to-play-a-g-minor-barre-chord-guitar-lessons/ Mon, 20 Dec 2010 04:01:34 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/434439-how-to-play-a-g-minor-barre-chord-guitar-lessons/

Transcript

Okay, G minor. We’re going to take an E shape, E minor, and we’re gonna move that to the third fret. All right? Here’s my bar at the third; here’s what looks like an E minor chord. I’m strumming all the strings, and that’s G minor.

Then of course I could do that with the A shape. So, I’m taking A minor, because we want a G minor chord, right? So I have to use it in a minor shape. I’m just adjusting my fingers so I have the first one free. I bring that to the 10th fret, that’s where G is. So here’s G minor.

That’s how you make a G minor barre chord.

Instructions

  • Step 1: To make D minor, take the E minor form down to the 10th fret, or the A minor form to the 5th fret.

Transcript

Okay, next is D minor. So D minor, if you remember, we played it as an open chord earlier. And you can always do that, but other ways to make it – and here’s one way, here’s E minor, I’m going to bring it to the tenth fret to make D minor. So my barre is on the tenth fret, and I have my E minor shape. But now it’s turned into D minor. And then, you can do A minor shape – with my first finger free. But this time I’m going to bring it to the fifth fret to make D minor.
