How to Play Triplets on Heavy Metal Guitar

Transcript

All right, let’s talk about triplets. If you’re relatively new to the guitar, a good place to start might be the pentatonic scale, where you have the option of ascending or descending in triplets. A common way to play the pentatonics with triplets would be to take the scale, which is this, then start on the second note, and go from the second to the first and back to the second, in a triplet.

You’re dividing the beat into three parts. So, I’m not going one, two, three, four, that would be eight notes. I’m going da-da-da da-da-da da-da-da. Here’s what happens if I work my way up the scale in triplets.

So, I’m still here, feeling this as my pulse. Here’s what happens when I descend in triplets. Okay, so you should practice that slowly. Here it is with full volume.

Descending.

Okay, another thing you can do with triplets, this is a little more advanced. I’m going to go the E-minor scale, all right, starting with the low string. This gets kind of interesting. You can take a four note pattern, so take the first four notes of E-minor, and then the next four, et. cetera, et. cetera. Play those as triplets, so then you get a pattern like this.

Okay, so those are all triplets, just a four note pattern. Now, I’m going to play that fast, and with full volume.

There you have it. Fun with triplets, enjoy.
