How to Use Drop B Tuning on Heavy Metal Guitar

Transcript

More and more guitar players are asking about Drop B tuning. Drop B tuning is something that got popular in the 90’s and the 00 and the basic idea behind it is you’re tuning the whole guitar to B. So, if I take the B string, and then I take the low E string and I drop it all the way down, that’s my first step for Drop B tuning.

Okay? So what just happened? I took the E string and I dropped it down a fourth. Same pitch as up a fifth. So now, every other string has to drop down a fourth. So, A has to become E. So, I’m going to tune that to E. Now, I’ll fine tune this with a tuner once I’m done, but this is just to get started. D is going to become A. G is going to become D. B is going to become F sharp. And then E, is again, going to become B. Octave of a low B, which is now drifting upwards, because it’s used to being tuned E. Okay, so now I’m going to fine tune all this with a tuner.

So now, you can just play the guitar as you normally would, but it’s going to sound very low and sludgy. So, great for power chords. And there you go. Have some fun with Drop B tuning and I hope you enjoyed the lesson.
