How to Play Metal Guitar Riffs in Drop D

Transcript

Alright, I’d like to talk about metal guitar riffs in drop D.

You have a lot of possibilities when you drop D. Basically you’re turning this low E string to the D. And it gives you this chord. And one of the best ways to create riffs is to really concentrate on the difference between muting the strings and opening the strings. So you could do this while you’re moving your first finger around to create different chords. That’s why drop D is so cool because you just move this finger around. And you have all these possibilities.

So if I move around and I mute the strings, I might get something like. Alright, so those are all muted. I’m going to break it up by opening up two of the chords. Check it out. So that was all done with chords. I don’t just have to do chords, I could also do single notes. So now I’m going to do the same type of thing, but I’m going to play some single notes [indecipherable 00:01:43] fifth string. Trading off with the low chord. Oh yeah, I should point out that you can down stroke and up stroke, and that really helps give character to your rhythm. Okay, the last thing I was doing was taking these chords, pulling off. So the more combinations of all those ideas you come up with, the better riffs you’ll come up with.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this lesson on metal riffs using drop D tuning.
