Let’s talk about the natural minor scale. If I play the natural minor scale from A, it’s also called A Aeolian, by the way, there are several ways to play it. I like to start out on the 5th fret position. This is very close to the pentatonic scale. The minor pentatonic scale first is this. As I add in this not, B, and this note, F, in that exact same position, I get A natural minor. You’ll notice I played the B here on the 4th string. I also have the option of playing that on the 3rd string, 4th fret. It’s important to practice that in both positions. That’s the A minor 5th fret position.
Another way to play it would be playing three notes per string, working your way up the neck and ending up here. Whenever you learn a scale, you want to play it in as many positions as possible. What if I go to the next string, the 5th string, which happens to be A? I could play A natural minor at the 12th fret. I could play the same thing an octave lower and this gives me the open A string. There I’ve played the natural minor but only in A. Remember there are 12 keys and you should aspire to play in all 12 keys.
