EntertainmentHow to Throw a Party

How to Stage a Flash Rave

Instructions

  • Step 1: Put together a team Put together a team to share the responsibilities of deciding on a location, spreading the word, and getting music.
  • Step 2: Decide on a location Decide on a location. Pick an easy-to-find public place with enough room to accommodate a dance party.
  • Step 3: Use social media to recruit Recruit flash ravers using social media like blogs, networking sites, and text-message services. Be sure to include the when and where, along with cues for when to start and stop dancing.
  • TIP: Establish rules to keep the rave safe, courteous, and legal.
  • Step 4: Get music Get music. Flash raves are short, so pick one or two high-energy dance songs. Use a portable stereo; just make sure it’s loud enough that everyone will be able to hear it. If that isn’t an option, consider throwing a silent rave where everyone brings headphones and mp3 players to dance to their own beat.
  • Step 5: Get the party started Get the party started! Be courteous to non-raving bystanders and disperse at the agreed upon time. Most importantly, have fun!
  • FACT: In February 2009 a flash rave with more than 14,000 participants shut down Liverpool train station in London.
