Male 1: So really, really quick I got some rubber bands right here. All I want you to do is examine that and make sure it’s normal. Are there any trap doors? Battery compartments or holes?

Heather: No.

Male 1: (?) drink. There’s a hole right over here.

Heather: [laughs]

Male 1: Just kidding. Okay. Now, you have heard of handcuffs before, right? Well, these are rubber band cuffs. And you’ve taken science before. In science, can a solid object penetrate through another solid object?

Heather: No.

Male 1: This can’t come through without breaking, correct?

Heather: No, it can’t.

Male 1: Watch. It can’t come out here, here, or here. Watch. All I want you to do is blow on it, just like that. (?) comes. Right. Through. I’ll show you one more time. Hold it just like this. Okay. (?) Thumbs up. Get a great grip. Hold (?). Watch. Now. My rubber band is on your side? Or on my side?

Heather: My side.

Male 1: Okay, watch. This is my right, my left, and middle. Where do you want it to come out?

Heather: My right.

Male 1: Okay, your right. Okay. It can’t come out any which way. Watch. You blow on it just like that. Here it comes.

Heather: [laughs]

Male 1: Thank you.

You’re going to have the first band on your left hand. Or reversed if you’re a righty. Whatever. And, you know, you’re going to have the other one right behind it with the first finger and the thumb. … So situations like this. And you stretch it out a couple of times. For the penetration, you’re going to come down with your right hand. And the middle finger of the right hand is going to pinch the rubber band on the top of the right hand. So it doesn’t come off. And then the first finger of the right hand goes into the gap of the band. And as you come back, you let go of the middle finger, and it looks like it went right through.

And you could actually make the motions again. So it looks like it’s still inside. And whenever you want, you can rub the middle, straight to blow on, or snap their fingers. And it looks like it comes right through. And the same goes with when the spectator’s actually holding it. Put their first fingers and thumbs up. You’re going to put your rubber band right behind it. And all the moves are the same. The pinch, insert, come back let go, and the reveal.

Roger “Rogue” Quan: Hey Heather, how about a card trick?

Heather: Cool.

Roger: I just need a number between, I guess 10 and 20. Any number you want.

Heather: 18.

Roger: 18. Do you want to change your mind?

Heather: No.

Roger: No. We’ll deal out 18 cards, alright? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. That’s pretty fair, right? Let’s randomize this a little bit more. 18 consists of two numbers, one and eight. What’s one plus eight?

Heather: Nine.

Roger: Deal down nine cards. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Actually, memorize that card. Got it?

Heather: Mm-hmm.

Roger: I’m gonna read your mind. It’s a black card, correct? It’s a club. It’s an odd card. The number, it’s a little low, pretty low. It’s a three of clubs.

Heather: Yeah.

Roger: Awesome.

Okay, here’s the secret to the math card trick.

Basically, you need a regular deck and you have to memorize the card at the tenth position. So One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. In this case, the five of clubs.

You have to kind of force this card on your spectator without them knowing.

So that’s the tenth card from the top of the deck. You have them name a number between ten and 20. So any number from 11 through 19 will work.

So let’s pretend the card is 12. You deal down from the top. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12.

Now you’re gonna tell them they’re gonna randomize the trick a little bit more. You’re going to have them add up the two numbers that make up 12, which equals three actually. One and two equals three.

And they’re going to deal from the smaller pile. One, two, three. They memorize this card. That happens to be the five of clubs. The card that you actually know in your mind.

So basically what happens now is you’re going to read their mind any which way you want. I like to do it nice and slow. I tell themm, “Your card is a black card, it’s a club, it’s a number card, it’s little bit low, it’s the five of clubs.”

It’s an amazing trick that you can do for your friends.

And that is the math card trick. Have fun, guys.

Rogue: Alright, we’ve got here some business cards. I’m going to sign, put my initials on that body right there. And here take the pen. I want you to write your initials on the back of the card, right here on the white space. Perfect. Heather I’ll give you a hand. Put your hand on top of the card. These are all unmarked, correct?

Heather: Yep.

Rogue: I’m just gonna take a random one right over here. Nothing on the back correct? No signature?

Heather: No.

Rogue: Okay, watch this it’s pretty interesting. Watch, take it. Just like that. Do you see it? There’s a signature on it now. Your signature actually, your initials. Watch, just like that there is no signature on the front. Take a look. My signature is on the front but yours has disappeared from the back. Check out the back.

Heather: How’d you do that?

Rogue: Pretty well.

This is actually one of my pet effects so you can definitely use this to hand out your business cards, it’s really, really cool. You need stack of business cards, around 30 business cards. Preferably your own so you can actually promote for yourself. What I would like to do first is to sign the business card with my initials. So you sign the business card with your initials, right there. And then you are going to have them, the spectator, sign the back of the business card. But before they do that you are going to do something that is called a Double Lift. Basically you are going to lift up two cards as one. So you feel from the bottom, as you feel two cards you turn them over as one card. So it looks like the back of the card you’ve signed. Now you have them sign the back of the business card, what they think is the back of the business card, which is actually the back of the card in the back of it. Now you’re going to do your Double Lift one more time. Lift up two cards as one and turn it over so they see that you’re signature is still on the front of the card as it should be.

At this point you are going to take the top card, the one with your signature on it but doesn’t have the signature on the back, in between their hands like a sandwich. Leave them right here for now. There signature is actually on the back of this card but they don’t know that. You are going to take an indifferent card, another card, and you are going to face it out so there is no signature right here. You are going to do your Double Lift one more time for the transposition. Now there’s two cards back to back, one with the signature on the back, this one has no signature. You are going to hold it from the opposite corners and you are going to wave it back and forth. As you do that you are going to take your first finger and you are going to pivot it. Now there is no signature on the front but there signature pops up on the back. You can tap their hand from the bottom with the business card and they see inside their hand, now the reveal, your signature is still here but their signature disappears from the back and has transposed to the card that you changed. So that is the Business Card trick or the Signature Transportation.

Heather: Yep.

A: Cool. This is a very, very, mysterious fact, actually. You can rub the pen cap on your jeans, and watch: you can make it almost magnetic. Watch. Let me see if I can do this. Pull it back. Look, it attracts. Watch. Then demagnetize it. Here. Try it out. [pause] Maybe next time.

Hey, guys. Here’s the explanation for the magnetic pen cap. For this next trick, I usually say that it’s static electricity. You’re going to need one of those pens, the Bic pens, with the clear barrel and the blue cap with the rounded edge. Very important, because what you need to do is, you need to squeeze the pen cap between your first finger and thumb so it looks like it’s actually attracted back to the pen, so basically it shoots right back. Just like that. You can also do it right-side up, and you can also do it upside-down, so it looks like it defies gravity. That’s the definition for the magnetic pen cap.

Rogue: Heather, can I borrow your pen?

Heather: What pen?

Rogue: The imaginary pen on your ear.

Heather: Oh, this pen.

Rogue: Yeah. All right, a quick demonstration, if you will, of static electricity.

Heather: [LAUGHS]

Rogue: Is that great?

Heather: Yeah.

Rogue: Static electricity, goes a long way.

Heather: Whoa.

Rogue: Okay. Here’s the explanation for moving a pen with your mind. You could use any pen. You could use a straw, a pencil. Make sure it’s round, nothing with any edges. And basically, all you have to do to move the pen on the table is, you’re actually going to blow on it. But not obviously, of course, let me explain. You’re going to pretend you’re using your telekinetic abilities. You’re going to blow on the pen while you’re bending down, while moving your hand forward.

A couple of things that I noticed that work better with this illusion is that if you’re wearing a baseball cap, it actually covers your face a little bit more. And a little bit of ambiance would help out a lot, like, if there’s music playing or you’re doing it outdoors where people won’t hear your breath as much. So, have fun and go out there and blow people away with the moving the pen with your mind.

A: This is actually pretty interesting. If I take a rubber band, right? Watch. One. Two. Three. It disappears.

B: Where did it go?

A: Rubber band heaven. There are always rubber bands lying around the office, so this should be really, really easy for you guys to do on the fly. Basically, what you need are a bunch of rubber bands, preferably size 19. These are a perfect size for them, and make sure they’re the same color. This is what they call the camouflage principal.

Basically, there’s a bunch of rubber bands on your wrist. You’re going to take one, and you’re going to give it a twist. You’re going to pinch right here, between your hands, so it looks like you have a rubber band between your fingers. Basically, what it is, it’s going around the wrist, and when you let go, it vanishes. It looks like this. It looks like you’re grabbing a rubber band off your wrist, and you do a bigger motion. One. Two. Three. You let go. It disappears. Simple as that. One more time. Give it a twist. Hold it between your hands. Stretch it out a couple of times. It looks like a throwing motion. That’s it. That’s the secret for the vanishing rubber band.

Heather: I do. I have a quarter.

Roger: Ah, that’ll work. Check this out, it’s interesting. Watch, put the quarter right over here, watch….just like that. Disappears, hey, behind your ear. What is that? Oh. Yeah! There you go.

Heather: Thank you.

Roger: You’re welcome.

This is a very old trick. A lot of people have told me that they’ve seen their grandfather do it to them when they were kids. Basically you need a coin, preferably a quarter. It’s very common, quarters are very common. You’re going to put it in your right hand, or your left hand, if you’re a lefty. And you’re going to pretend to put it into your left hand. This is something called false transfer.

Just, basically what you’re going to do is, if you’re really putting it in your hand, it looks like this. You’re going to practice with it, you’re going to pretend to put it in. So basically you going to tilt your hand, and your thumb’s going to hold onto the quarter, so it looks like this. And then you’re going to squeeze, and it disappears. One more time. It looks like it goes into the left hand, and your right hand, with the quarter, should go dead. Squeeze, and disappears, and you could actually make it reappear from somebody’s ear by just producing it from the ear just like this. So again, right hand, pretend to put it into your left…squeeze…disappears. And you’re going to produce it from somebody’s ear, just like that.

Male: Hey, have you any money on you, like a bill, a high bill?

Female: Are you going to give it back?

Male: Yes. I’ll try. Oh, wow. High roller. Okay, hold your for a second. You’ve seen on T.V. where they cut a lady in half and stuff like that, right?

Female: Yes.

Male: I don’t think you want to be cut in half right now.

Female: No.

Male: It’s a little painful. So we’re going to use the bill. I’m actually not going to cut the bill in half. I am going to put a hole right through the bill. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Female: Yes.

Male: Watch. Pencil, right inside the hundred. It’s inside, yes or no?

Female: Yes.

Male: Just like that, it goes right through. You can see the hole. You can see it inside, both sides.

Female: You’re going to own me a hundred bucks.

Male: Maybe. Pull it right out. Now this is very interesting, Heather.
There’s actually… Can you see it? A hole, but your hundred dollar bill is totally unharmed. There’s no hole.

Female: Good thing.

Male: This is really, really cool because you can actually use any bill and any pencil, or a pen or a knife. You just need some kind of paper, it could be loose leaf paper. It could be another bill, actually. I am using index cards here. A Post-It Note. Anything you want, it doesn’t really matter. I’ll show you what to do with that in a moment. Basically what you need to do is finagle their bill a little bit and all you need to do is to get a little rip inside the bill.

You can actually have a ripped one in your pocket already of the same bill. You can switch it out. You can say, ‘is this the hundred you just gave me? Oh, it is? Thanks a lot’. You can do the switch in your pocket or you can just finagle with their bill and when they’re looking at you, you could just tear a little slit… I would say a quarter of the way down. Nobody sees that. It’s normal. Basically you’re going to take your index card or your Post-It Note and you rip off a small piece about that big.

You’re going to fold the index card around the bill. Bend the bill down. I would say half an inch from the top. Have the index card on the outside. Fold it about that big so you show half the bill here and half of it is inside the index card. Take your pencil or your pen or whatever and you going to put it actually inside the fold. But, there’s a secret. The pencil sneaks out of this little slit that you actually ripped and down towards the index card. If anything shows here, like a rip, you’ve got it covered with your thumb. In this case, it’s pretty good. You don’t really see much. You’re going to cover that up anyway.

You can actually bend the back corner a little bit and the front corner a little bit. This is a very, very fair display. You can show both sides and that it’s actually inside the bill. What you do now is you’re going to push the pencil right through what seems like the hundred dollar bill. You show bother sides again, it looks really, really good. Turn back over and you’re going to pull the pencil out. Show that the index card has a hole and show that the bill is totally normal. You put your fingers on the slit and that is the secret to the pencil through a borrowed bill.

Rogue: I used to be a ninja before I became a magician. No, I’m serious. I can turn any ordinary object into a weapon. Want to see a demonstration?

Heather: Okay. Should I be scared?

Rogue: Not really. Take this pencil. And it’s pretty solid, right?

Heather: Yes.

Rogue: Do you think this index card could actually cut that in half?

Heather: No.

Rogue: No, right. Let’s try. Hold that tight, though, hold it really, really tight. Here we go. On the count of three, Okay?

Heather: Okay.

Rogue: One…

Heather: …One…

Rogue: …Two…

Heather: …Two.

Rogue: Three. Wow, I still got it.

Heather: Wow. That’s crazy.

Rogue: And the best part about it, Heather, look watch this. Being a magician and all. Watch. Totally restored.

Heather: Shut up.

Rogue: Okay. This is a really, really cool item. This is breaking a pencil with an index card. You could actually use a carrot. If you want to break a carrot it’s actually easier. Pencils, as you can see, can be a little bit painful. Also an index card, or you could use a bill. As long as the paper you’re using is, I guess, as long as your finger at least because that’s actually the secret.

Basically you’re going to have somebody hold the pencil. Make sure they hold it really, really tight so it doesn’t slip off their fingers. You’re going to tell them, like I tell them that I’m a ninja by day and that I can turn any object into a secret weapon. Basically I’m going to tell them that I could break the pencil with an index card. So I go down one, two. On three I’m going to stick out my finger. I’m actually breaking the pencil with my first finger. Like I said, pencils hurt a little bit. If you use a carrot or something like that it’s actually easier on the finger.

So that’s the secret. Basically, on three. One, two, three – you stick out your first finger and when it comes down you put your finger back. You give them the index card – it’s unharmed. And the pencil is broken – or the carrot. It’s an amazing trick that you can do any time anywhere.

Male: That one’s good too, it’s good to go. All right, it’s two different colors, right?

Male: OK. Now, Heather, this is interesting. I want you to pinch this one, and this one right here, in the middle, pinch it. Pinch it, rub it back and forth. Rub it back and forth, back and forth. Watch. When you feel that they have linked, I want you to let go when you think they’re linked. Check it out, let go. Oh, you did great, look at that, it’s actually linked. Isn’t that great?

Heather: It’s crazy.

Male: That’s crazy right?

Heather: Yeah.

Male: Well, you know what, to unlink you need to rub it again. Rub back and forth, just to soften up the fibers of the rubber band. All right, and, let go. Whoa, you did great. Awesome.

Heather: [laughs] How’d we do that?

Male: Can you keep a secret?

Heather: Maybe.

Male: So can I. Okay. Here’s the explanation to the linking rubber bands. For this illusion you’re going to need two rubber bands, size 19. They should be of different colors. I use a blue one and a tan one. You’re going to put the rubber bands between your hands by the index finger and the ring finger. And you’re going to need a little bit of misdirection for this, because you’re going to set this up where the second band and the third band, you need to switch them. So basically you’re going to bring this up, twist it, and bring it down. So basically you’re switching the second and third bands, so now it looks like the blue one is on top and the tan one is on the bottom, as it should be, but in reality they’re twisted on either side of the bands. So basically what you’re going to do right now is you’re going to have a spectator pinch the second and third bands, rub it back and forth, and you’re going to say the heat from the rubbing is going to melt them together and make them link. But what you’re really do is your going to let go of your middle finger of the right hand and it actually looks like it’s linked together. You can let go of that, it looks like it’s linked. But in reality it’s twisted on one side.

Whenever you want them to unlink you’re going to let go of your middle finger of your left hand. And that unlinks. So one more time. You’re going to switch these two, and you’re going to rub the second and third bands together, when you let go of the middle finger of the right hand, it links. And when you let go of the middle finger of the left hand, it unlinks. And that’s the secret to the linking rubber bands.

Heather: What are you doing with my coffee?

Male 1: It’s, like, possessed. Here you go.

Heather: OK. I don’t want it back.

Male 1: You don’t want it back?

Heather: I’m scared of it.

Male 1: [laughs]

Male 1: OK. Here’s the explanation to the floating coffee cup. There are always coffee cups in the office, so this is a really, really good ice breaker. You need a coffee cup. Definitely Styrofoam cup, and I’ll tell you why. And it could be filled with coffee, but if it’s filled with coffee you want it to be below the half way mark. Because the secret is, basically, when you take the coffee cup what you’re going to do is you’re going to literally poke a hole right into the coffee cup. Right into it there should be a hole. And to mask that sound you could cough, or you could do whatever, like, laugh really loud. I don’t know what you want to do. But basically, once the thumb is inside the coffee cup what you want to do is you want to let go of all your fingers. And if you want you could shake a little bit, and it looks like it’s really, really floating. And make sure your fingers are far away from the cup, so they don’t think you’re holding it in any way. So a little bit of shaking actually adds to the illusion. And you always want to try to grab it before it gets too far, like it’s trying to fly away from you. And that’s the secret to the floating coffee cup. Have fun.

Rogue: I’m going to show you something. Why don’t you readily pick a card, have here. All the pips have gone, totally disappeared. If you can do a little bit of magic for me actually Heather. All I wanted to do is snap your fingers over the deck, just like that, and now all the pips come back just like that, and you can check it out. Just a regular, normal deck. Thank you.

Okay, here’s the secret to the blank deck trick. This tricks really cool because you can use any deck for this trick. Basically what you need to do is get one of the Aces’. Ace of clubs is good, ace of hearts or ace of diamonds. You can’t use the ace of spades because there’s too much ink on it, as you’ll see in a second. What you want to do is you want to hold the left pip with your left hand and you’re going to fan it towards the left as wide as you can. And with your right hand, you’re going to cover up the remaining ink on the card. So it looks like totally blank fan. To make the ink comeback, what you’re going to want to do is you’re going to want to at the deck and fan it towards your right, and that’s how all the ink appears to have returned to the cards and that’s the secret to the blank deck illusion.

Rogue: All right Heather. Something really quick with a deck of cards. I have here the eight and the nine. Take the cards. And I want you to put them anywhere you want inside the deck. Right there. Right there. Nice and fair. Buried inside the deck, correct?

Heather: Yup.

Rogue: All right. Please count to three for me.

[Both]: One, two, three.

Rogue: Just like that. Within the deck. The 8 and the 9.

Heather: That’s awesome.

Rogue: Thank you.

Heather: [laughs]

Rogue: For this trick I’m going to need the nine of spades, eight of clubs, nine of clubs, and the eight of spades. And the secret behind this trick is that you never really tell them which nine and which eight it is, so it gets a little confusing for them at the end.

Basically what happens is you’re going to put one of the eights on the top, and one of the nine on the bottom, and you’re going to have the other eight and the other nine on top of the deck.

You’re going to show them the eight and the nine but you don’t tell them that it’s the club and the spades. You don’t tell them that it’s the eight of clubs and the nine of spades. So you show them really quickly so they don’t really know which one is which. They just know it’s the black eight and a black nine.

You have them put the cards anywhere in the center of the deck. So now the situation is you have one of the different eights and one of the different nines on the top and bottom. To do your reveal you’re going to squeeze the deck in your right hand and on the count of three you’re going to, just keep squeezing, you’re going to shoot one of the cards over. Basically what happens is, as you keep squeezing, it shoots out. It looks like it comes from the middle of the deck and that’s basically a different and a different nine, but to them, they think they’re the same card because in the beginning you didn’t really mention which nine it was and which eight it was. And that’s the explanation for the ‘Eight and Nine’ trick.

Roger “Rogue” Quan: Hey, Heather. Do you have a credit card I could borrow? I’ll give it right back, actually. After I go shopping.

Heather: What will you do with it?

Roger: Wow, Chase. Nice. Watch. Here you go. You almost got a heart attack there. We call that broken and restored credit.

Heather: That was scary.

Roger: I know.

Okay, here’s the explanation to the broken and restored credit card. This effect, you can use any credit card. I like to use other people’s credit cards, so definitely I want you guys to practice this, because you don’t want to break somebody’s credit card by accident. That wouldn’t be cool.

Basically, take a credit card. Right? Or, borrow a credit card. And you’re going to hold it between your hands, thumb in the back, and you’re going to do a little bit of bending. Really, really bend it. And when you’re ready to break it, basically what you’re going to do is, you’re going to hold your thumbs on the edges of the card, and you’re going to swing this back like this. Like that. So basically, you make that snapping sound. And from the front it looks like this, and you totally restore it instantly. So basically, from here to here. So from here to here. One more time. And that’s the broken and restored credit card.

Heather: Cool.

Roger: All right. Cool. All I want you to do, Heather, is to take the deck and cut it anywhere you want. Very cool. I’m just gonna mark the cut, okay Heather? How fair was that? Did I force you to cut right there?

Heather: No.

Roger: No. You cut anywhere you wanted to, right?

Heather: Yeah.

Roger: All I want you to do is just take the card, memorize the card you cut to. All right? Got it? Put it right back on top. All right. I’m gonna attempt to read your mind. I want you to focus in on the card. Think of the card and nothing else, okay?

Heather: Okay.

Roger: The first time. What was the name of the card you cut to?

Heather: It was three of hearts.

Roger: That’s exactly what I got.

Heather: That’s awesome.

Roger: Thank you.

Okay, here’s the secret to the Mind Reading card trick. It’s a great mentalism effect that you can do using a regular deck of cards. The best thing to do is actually borrow a deck of cards. And when you borrow the deck, all you have to do is just peek at the top card. In this case, it’s the eight of diamonds. And then, all you gotta do is just take the deck and shuffle it. But retain the top card. Again. Shuffle again if you want. Retain the top card like I said. So the top card is still the eight of diamonds.

Have them cut the deck anywhere they want. They can cut it anywhere they want. And you’re going to mark the cut. Take this half and just mark the cut. And this is actually a force. You force the eight of diamonds on them. I’ll show you how in a second. And you’re gonna talk to them for a second. You’ll say, “Was that fair? You could have cut anywhere you wanted to.” This is called time misdirection.

Then you tell them to memorize the card they cut to. But, in reality, that’s actually the top card, eight of diamonds. But since you talked to them they forget. And thus the term time misdirection.

One more time. You’re gonna peek at the top card. Have them cut the deck. Mark the cut. Talk a little bit. And have them look at the card they cut to which is the top card. And all you have to do is just read their mind. You could write it down. You could tell them, “A red card, a diamond, it’s a number card, eight of diamonds.”

So have fun. Go out there and amaze people. That’s the Mind Reading card trick.

Roger “Rogue” Quan: Hey, Heather, I see you’re holding a pencil. Can I borrow that for a second? Thank you. This is not a trick question, but do you see the number two logo on the pencil? Is that on both sides, you think, or is that only on one side?

Heather: I think it’s on both sides.

Roger: Actually, it’s only on one side. But, being a magician, watch, I can transfer the ink right onto the back, so now it’s on both sides.

Heather: Woah.

Roger: Isn’t that cool?

Heather: Yeah.

Roger: If I shake this like that I could make the ink totally disappear from both sides. Of course, I’ve got to bring that back.

Heather: Wow.

Roger: Both sides. But, of course, at the very end I have to erase that ink so it’s back to normal…

Heather: Woah.

Roger: Just for you.

Heather: That’s crazy.

Roger: Hey guys, this is the number two pencil trick. This is actually one of my pet effects. There are actually marketed versions of this trick on the market using gems or colored circles. I took the liberty of using number two pencils because these actually are very common in the office and around, you know, wherever, you know, there are office supplies.

Basically, you take your number two pencil. The logo’s actually on one side. To show it on both sides you’re going to do something that’s called a paddle move which is a very old move in magic. Basically, as you come up you’re going to give the pencil a half twist, a half twist just like that. Basically, the larger motion’s going to cover the smaller motion.

So like I said, as you come up you give it a twist so it looks like the number two is on both sides of the pencil. So in real time it looks pretty convincing. You don’t want to do this too many times, otherwise they might catch on, but just once or twice. It looks like the number two logo is on both sides.

To show that the number two pencil disappears, all I’m going to do is just twist it once. As I’m shaking I twist it once, and now it’s not there any more because there is no number two logo on the back.

To show that’s blank on both sides, again I do the paddle move. To make it come back, twist it one more time while I’m shaking the pencil and it comes back. Show it again it’s on both sides. And at the end just rub it off. Pretend to rub off the back. And now it’s back to normal.

And that’s the explanation for the number two pencil trick.

Rogue: Can I borrow your pencil for a second?

Heather: Sure.

Rogue: OK, I’ll show you a really, really cool illusion. Check this out. So, it’s pretty solid right the wood? But watch, you can actually, but wait is this made out of rubber?

Heather: Woah.

Rogue: I create.

Heather: It does look like it’s rubber.

Rogue: It’s awesome.

Heather: It is awesome… I wish it was rubber.

Rogue: I know, it’s cool right. They actually sold joke pencils, rubber pencils at the magic shop. But this one is solid wood.

Heather: Yeah… Awesome.

Rogue: Thank you.

Okay, here’s the explanation for the rubber pencil trick. This is very, very simple you can do this actually with any pencil, and what you need to is your gonna hold the pencil between your thumb and your index finger. And you’re going to, just move it up and down. Retain pressure, with your finger, you don’t want to squeeze it too hard otherwise it won’t work. Bring them loose so it’s actually swinging back and forth on your fingers. It looks like rubber, the illusion is perfect and you can do it for a little if your want. And this looks like it’s just pure rubber, I like to do this and then drop it on a table and everybody swears that it’s those pencils you buy from the magic shop. It actually working with pens, rubber pens, and also you can use a marker.

It just looks so rubbery, it’s a beautiful illusion, it’s been around for about 100 years. And you can also use like silverware like forks and knives, it’s an amazing illusion, you can amaze and baffle people anytime you want. And that’s the explanation for the rubber pencil.

A: Hey, Heather. Want to see something crazy?

Heather: Yeah.

A: Check this out. Make sure that’s normal.

Heather: Looks normal.

A: Pretty good?

Heather: Yeah.

A: All right. Watch. Make sure my thumb is normal. There’s no trap door?

Heather: No.

A: Okay. Watch. I’m going to wrap this around my thumb twice. All right? Grab my thumb on the top so it can’t come out the rubber band. Watch this. One. Two. Three. It comes right through. Just like that.

Here’s the explanation to the rubber band penetration through the thumb. For this illusion you’re going to need a rubber band, preferably a size 19, and your thumb. You loop the rubber band around your thumb. I use my right hand. Basically what you’re going to do is, you’re going to twist the rubber band away from you with your left hand, creating a triangle. You’re going to put your first finger into the triangle, and you’re going to turn it towards you, creating a circle, a ring, around your first finger.

Then you’re going to put this loop that your left hand’s in over your thumb one more time, as you pull the little loop that your first finger’s made taut. Basically what you’re going to do is, you’re going to have them hold your thumb as this locks into place. When your first finger comes out from the loop, you’re going to pull your left hand taut, and have them grab your thumb. All you have to do is just shake, and it comes right through. That’s the explanation for the rubber band penetration through the thumb.

Male 1: Hey, Heather.

Heather: Hi.

Male 1: Could I borrow some rubber bands from you, actually? A small one.

Heather: I have two, actually.

Male 1: Oh, cool, borrow this one right here.

Heather: That way.

Male 1: …. Actually, check this out. It’s pretty cool. I put on my first two fingers. Now watch. It’s going to jump to these two fingers. Wouldn’t that be a cool illusion? Watch this.

Heather: Yeah.

Male 1: Why don’t you just blow. It jumps. Was that great? I’ll do it one more time, Heather. Watch.

Heather: Okay.

Male 1: It’s on these two. Watch this. All I have to do is blow. It jumps. Actually show you how that’s done. No, seriously. Believe it or not, it’s something called sleight of hand. Basically, when you’re not looking, it actually jumps from here to here. It goes so fast that you can’t actually register it. But you know what? I’m going to go one step further. Can I borrow another rubber band from you?

Heather: I have one more.

Male 1: Cool. Check this out. I’m going to wrap my fingers up right now. So that becomes impossible. Now it can’t come out. It’s blocked.

Heather: Yeah.

Male 1: Okay? Just like Houdini. Check this out. Watch. Blow. Now that’s impossible.

Heather: What? [laughs] Wow.

Heather: That was awesome.

Male 1: Thank you.

Okay, here’s the secret to the jumping rubber band. For this illusion you need two rubber bands. One of them should be pretty small. And one of them could be actually any size rubber band. Regular 19s would be fine. Something thick would be good too, actually. Basically, you’re going to put the rubber band around your first two fingers. And to make it jump to the other two fingers, basically what you’re going to do is you’re going to pull the rubber band. And you’re going to bend the fingers and insert the fingers into the rubber band. And basically the rubber band’s going to be wrapped around all four fingers below the first knuckle. So that when you open your hand, it actually jumps.

So I’ll do that one more time for you. Basically, it’s on the first two fingers. You stretch it out. Remember, this is actually not the audience view. It’s your view. Audience is on the other side, so you don’t see this happening. You pull it. The rubber band’s wrapped below the first knuckle. Around the nail, actually. And when you open your hand, it jumps. So basically, when I do the second part of the illusion where I tell them I’m going to teach them, I tell them that it jumps off and onto these hands. These fingers. So it jumps like this. Basically what I do is I wrap the rubber band, twist here, twist, twist. Now they think it’s impossible because of my false explanation.

Basically what happens is you do the same thing again. Bend your fingers. Goes below the first knuckle. When you open your hand, it jumps to the other side. So basically that was a false explanation. And they get fooled either way. And that’s the explanation for the jumping rubber band.

Speaker 2: Like what?

Speaker 1: Like some people need coffee or cigarettes.

Speaker 2: Pizza.

Speaker 1: Pizza! That’s interesting, for me it’s, you are going to find this really weird. Check it out, rubber band, watch.

Speaker 2: Oh my God!

Speaker 1: Good for the sinuses actually. One a day keeps the doctor away. This is called the rubber band up the nose. You need a bunch of rubber bands, size 19 is the perfect size to use. You are going to have a bunch of them on your wrist, and I’ll explain why you need a bunch of them in a second. Basically what you are going to do is you are going to take a rubber band. You don’t have to take it off your wrist, you are going to twist it, away from you, pinch it between your fingers, pull on it, put it on your nose. And as you sniff up, you let go of the rubber band so, like that. So the illusion of your head going up and the rubber band going back down is a perfect illusion.

I’ll do it one more time for you. Stretch it out, twist it away from you, re grab, pull it between your fingers, put it around your nose and as you sniff you let go like that. And basically why you want to use a bunch of rubber bands, this is called the camouflage principal in magic. So when it shoots back it looks like, it just looks like you have a bunch of rubber bands and you don’t know if it’s the same one you pulled off or whatever it is. And this is a really fun item, it’s a great way to gross out your friends. So go out there and make some new friends, all right. That’s the rubber band up the nose.

Roger: Count with me, okay. One…

Heather: One.

Roger: Two.

Roger: Isn’t it great? Actually, it’s right over here. Isn’t that great, though? But, seriously, the real magic happens when you go one, two…

Heather: Two.

Roger: Three.

Heather: Three.

Roger: Just like that. You know where the bill went though, right?

Heather: No.

Roger: It went straight to my bank account.

Heather: Better not.

Roger: Thanks.

Heather: Thanks.

Roger: Here’s the explanation for the pencil and bill vanish. You can actually use a pen or you can use a piece of paper. Anything that actually fits in your hand will work for this. I like to use bills because they’re all over the place.

Take the bill, you borrow the bill, and you fold it into a little packet. You’re going to put that into your left hand. With your right hand you’re going to tap the pencil and have the audience count with you. It’s best to have the audience on your left for this as you’ll see in a moment. Basically, they’re going to count with you as you go one, two, three. By the way, you’re going to tell them that something magical’s going to happen on three. Don’t tell them what, just one, two, three.

On three you’re going to put the pencil right behind your ear. There’s a very old principle in magic called misdirection. As they look at the pencil in your ear you’re going to point to the pencil and you’re going to say that, “I got you.” As you take the pencil off you’re going to put the bill that’s in your left hand in your back pocket at that moment. So now, your hand comes back out, the bill’s no longer there, and you say, “The real magic’s going to happen now on the count of three.” One, two, three, and the bill vanishes.

And that’s the explanation for the pencil and bill vanish.

Roger “Rogue” Quan: Hey, Heather do you have any money I can borrow?

Heather: I hope that you’re going to give it back.

Roger: Maybe. Oh, wow! A high roller. You have been to the circus before, right?

Heather: Yes.

Roger: You’ve ever seen the circus where the acrobats actually, they jump off the trapeze? And they..

Heather: Yeah.

Roger: Anyway, we’re going to recreate that with an hundred dollar bill, which will serve as the stage for this little stunt, and two paper clips. What’s going to happen I’m going to pull the bill apart. The paper clip’s going to jump into the air and do, like, ten somersaults and they’re going to link together when they fall down. Would you be impressed?

Heather: I would.

Roger: You would?

Heather: I would.

Roger: All right, let’s do it, drum roll please.

Heather: Woah, they did it!

Roger: They’re linked together. What little circus performers they are, right?

Heather: Yeah, that’s pretty awesome.

Roger: For this next stunt, you’re going to need a bill, any bill will do, and some paper clips. First you’re going to take the bill and you’re going to fold it, I would say three quarters of the way. And then you’re going to fold it half way back almost, like a little bit more than half way. So you have a Z, with the edges sticking out, I would say like, a half inch on both sides.

First, you’re going to take the paper clip, one paper clip, and you’re going to put it in the front of the bill, right inside the crease. So your situation is in the front, and right here.

Second paper clip is going to go toward the back and your second crease. This is the second crease on this side, and on the right and the back until you see the paper clip, that’s the situation. And all you have to do to really start working the illusion, here’s what you need to do. Just pull the edges of the bill in opposite directions, and the paper clips are going to fly in the air and link together.

It’s a really cool stunt. Just like that, it links together. You can tell them that your paper clips actually performed in the circus or whatever patter you have and it’s an amazing little stunt. Have fun with the amazing linking paper clips.

Rogue: Good. Do you believe in psychic phenomenon?

Heater: I do.

Rogue:You do, I’m sure you’d believe a cool demonstration of psychic phenomenon. I just need a number, I guess between one and a thousand, a three digit number.

Heather: Um, 642.

Rogue: 642. You wanna change your mind or that’s a good number? 642. I’m gonna actually ask you now to randomize this number. What is the reverse of 642?

Heather: Um, 246.

Rogue: 246. All right, let’s subtract these numbers.

Heater: 642. 246. 396.

Rogue: 396?

Heather: Yeah.

Rogue: Actually, let’s randomize some more. What’s the reverse for 396?

Heather: 693.

Rogue: 693. And instead of subtracting them let’s add them together. What number do you have for that? 396, plus 693.

Heather: 1089. One thousand 89.

Rogue: One thousand eight-nine. Totally random number, would you say?

Heater: Yep.

Rogue: Well, it’s crazy. Before this uh, trick started, I wrote (?) on the back from last night, it happens to be 1089. Isn’t that great?

Heather: That’s crazy.

Rogue: Totally crazy.

Basically what you’re going to do is have your spectator name any three digit number. You can tell them that zero’s a no good, not a real number, and don’t repeat the numbers, so let’s just try, like 123. It can be any three digit number like I said, three different numbers. And you’re going tell them you’re going to randomize the number. What you’re going to do then is basically you’re going to reverse the number that they just named, which is 321. And you’re going to put the larger number on top of the smaller one and you’re going to subtract that number so it’s best to have somebody ready with a calculator. In this case let’s do this. 198, you tell them, you know what, let’s randomize it a little bit more, which you have to do for the trick to actually work, you’re going to reverse the new number, 198, which is 891, and this you’re going to add, so first subtract, then you’re going to add the two numbers together. And believe it or not, you almost always, I would say 95-98 percent, it would equal 1089.

And you’re probably asking, what’s the other number it could be? I would say 2 percent of the time it’s going to be the number 99, in which case, you never want to look silly when you’re doing a trick for somebody, so I would actually put a paper in my pocket in plain view, just in one pocket so they don’t think you have a bunch of predictions all over the place, that says you will pick the number 99, just in case the number turns out to be 99, which is a very slim chance, but it’ll either equal 1089, most of the time, or equal 99. I want you to have fun with this, this is amazing, any time there’s paper around, pens, you can do this illusion, anytime, anywhere. Have fun and that’s called the 1089 trick.

It’s pretty hot, right? Hey, I’m Rogue. I’m your Howcast office magic tricks expert. I’ve been doing magic for over 20 years. I got into magic when I was like 6 years old when I saw David Copperfield make the Statue of Liberty disappear. That actually blew me away. After that day I just wanted to become a magician so, so bad that I actually did magic every chance I got. It was amazing. I never stopped learning.
