Instructions

  • Step 1: Designate a moderator Designate one player to be the moderator. The moderator takes a card from the deck to represent each other player.
  • TIP: One-third of the cards should be black number cards, indicating mafia. The rest of the cards are red number cards and indicate citizens, plus one red King to be the detective and one red Queen to be the doctor.
  • Step 2: Deal the cards Pass out the cards randomly; face down, one per player. The players look at their cards, but keep them face down and secret for the duration of the game.
  • Step 3: Sleep Announce that it is nighttime if you are the moderator. Everyone closes their eyes. No peeking!
  • Step 4: Mafia wakes up Announce that the mafia wakes up. The mafia players open their eyes, acknowledging each other, and determine with hand gestures which of the civilians will be killed. Note the mafia and the victim if you’re the moderator.
  • Step 5: Investigate Announce, “the mafia sleep and the detective wakes up.” The mafia closes their eyes and the detective opens their eyes. The detective indicates to the moderator a player who he suspects is mafia and the moderator responds with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
  • Step 6: Save Announce that the detective sleeps and the doctor wakes up. The doctor points to a player or themselves and the moderator confirms whether that is who the mafia voted to kill.
  • Step 7: Announce daytime Announce that it is daytime if you’re the moderator, and the town wakes up. Everyone opens their eyes and the moderator reveals who has died in the night. The dead player can’t talk or gesture for the duration of the game unless they’re the person the doctor indicated.
  • Step 8: Accuse Accuse a player of being a member of the mafia if you’re a citizen. The accused must then be seconded by another citizen. The accused is allowed to plead their case, and then the players vote and majority rules. If the accused is killed, they reveal their card.
  • TIP: Use the information from your investigations as the detective to accuse members of the mafia, but do not be too obvious or the mafia will kill you next.
  • Step 9: Win the game Continue rounds of the game until one side wins. The citizens win if they manage to kill all the mafia, and mafia wins if they manage to kill all the citizens.
  • FACT: In 1966, decks with nothing but the ace of spades were scattered in the jungles and used as psychological warfare against the Viet Cong.

You Will Need

  • 7 or more players
  • Deck of cards

  • Step 2: Position trick cards Position the trick queens so that they are the second from the top, faceup. The red queen has a trick blue back, a diamond in one corner, and a heart in the opposite corner. The black queen has a red back and opposing symbols. There are now four cards in each pile.
  • TIP: Remember which suits are at the top of the deck and which are at the bottom, which will be crucial later in the trick.
  • Step 3: Pick a deck Ask the first spectator to pick a deck, either red or blue. The second spectator gets the other deck.

How to Win a Pie Eating Contest https://howcast.com/videos/281444-how-to-win-a-pie-eating-contest/ Sat, 16 Jan 2010 04:02:26 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/281444-how-to-win-a-pie-eating-contest/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Know the rules Know the rules. There are two kinds of pie-eating contests: one that determines who can eat a pie the fastest, and another that tests who can eat the most pies in a specified amount of time. In both cases, using your hands is forbidden.
  • Step 2: Eat before the big day Eat as much as you can in the days leading up to the event. This stretches out your stomach so you’ll be able to eat more, faster.
  • TIP: On the day of the contest, don’t eat anything; just drink lots of water and tea.
  • Step 3: Tie your hands Have a friend tie your hands behind your back and practice eating pie. When it’s time to compete, get your friend to tie your hands like you practiced to prevent disqualification due to hand use.
  • TIP: Fasten the plate to the table using Velcro strips if the rules permit. The Velcro will keep the pie in place so that it doesn’t slip away from you during the contest.
  • Step 4: Put your face in the pie Keep your head in the game. Push your face into the pie when the event begins and keep it in there. Turn your head side to side to and breathe, rather than wasting time by sitting up and going back and forth to the pie plate.
  • Step 5: Pace yourself Keep a steady pace that you can maintain for the duration of the contest. Don’t rush.
  • Step 6: Get down to the crust Eat the crust at the bottom as soon as possible to expose the pie tin. The exposed pie plate will make it appear to the judges that you’ve eaten more than if you had eaten just the pie’s filling. Stay focused and enjoy the delicious thrill of victory!
  • FACT: Major-league eaters in the International Federation of Competitive Eating can earn more than $10,000 per performance.

  • An appetite

How to Play Pictionary https://howcast.com/videos/281497-how-to-play-pictionary/ Mon, 11 Jan 2010 16:16:21 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/281497-how-to-play-pictionary/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Chose teams Divide players into teams of two or more people and pass out pads, pencils, category cards, and markers to each team. Place the timer and card box so all players can reach them.
  • Step 2: Determine order Roll the die to determine the play order. The team with the highest die roll starts first.
  • TIP: Determine acceptable answers before starting. For example, is using only a celebrity’s first or last name acceptable? Also, remind players that sketches cannot include letters, numbers, or symbols.
  • Step 3: Review “All Play” rules Landing on an All Play square means that the corresponding word on the word card is shown to the sketchers from each team, who draw clues simultaneously after time starts.
  • Step 4: Start the game Determine who will sketch first, and place all game markers on the board’s start square. The color or picture on the square where the marker rests determines which word from the word card is in play.
  • TIP: Set up a dry-erase board or tape a large sheet of paper to the wall to make it easier for all players to see the clues during an All Play challenge.
  • Step 5: Select a word card Instruct the first team’s sketcher to select a word card from the front of the deck and review it for no more than five seconds.
  • Step 6: Play the first round Turn over the one-minute sand timer and tell the sketcher to start drawing clues for their team. Allow the team to guess until they identify the clue or time is up.
  • Step 7: Decide who takes the next turn Assess whether the first team answered correctly. If so, the team rolls the die, advances their marker, and selects a new card. Otherwise, allow other teams a 30-second chance to “steal” the turn by correctly guessing the answer.
  • Step 8: Advance to the next round Advise the team on the previous player’s left to draw a new card if the previous team did not answer correctly before time expires. Teams need to wait to roll the die until they have correctly identified a word within the time limit.
  • Step 9: Win the game Aim to advance your marker to the final All Play square and be first to correctly identify the word.
  • FACT: Pictionary was invented by Rob Angel, a waiter in Seattle, and first distributed nationwide in 1986.

You Will Need

  • Four or more people
  • A Pictionary game set
  • A dry-erase board (optional)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Roll one die for your first turn. Playing with two dice is optional.
  • Step 2: Enter points on the score sheet if the number rolled is two, three, four, five, or six points. If you roll a one, you lose all the points you accumulated during that turn, and you lose your turn.
  • Step 3: Continue rolling the die until you’re happy with the number of points you’ve scored. Then, “hold” by handing the die over to your opponent, and track all points earned during your turn.
  • TIP: Knowing when to stop rolling and end your turn is the key to winning at Pig. It’s an exercise in deciding between gut instinct and greed.
  • Step 4: Reach 100 points first and win the game.
  • Step 5: To play with two dice, roll both for your first turn. If you roll a one on either die, you score zero for that turn and your turns ends, but if you roll two ones – or snake eyes – you lose your turn and all the points you’ve earned during the game.
  • FACT: The rules of Pig were first described in 1945 as a folk dice game by math whiz and gaming expert John Scarne.

How to Play Charades https://howcast.com/videos/209163-how-to-play-charades/ Sat, 08 Aug 2009 07:20:59 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/209163-how-to-play-charades/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Review common charades gestures. Cranking an old-time movie camera means the answer will be a film title. Making a rectangle with your thumbs and index fingers indicates a TV show. Holding up fingers indicates number of words; laying fingers on your arm indicates syllables in a word; and tugging on your ear means ”sounds like.”
  • TIP: Remember, the person acting out the charade can’t speak or make any kind of sound, and can’t point at objects or people in the room to give clues.
  • Step 2: Pick a neutral player to keep score and time the charade rounds, using a stopwatch, a timer, or a watch with a second hand.
  • Step 3: Break into separate rooms by team to write down a charade phrase, title, or subject on a given number of index cards. Each team folds up an equal number of cards and puts them in their basket or bowl.
  • TIP: Charade subjects may be phrases, quotes, titles, or the name of a famous person.
  • Step 4: Choose a member of your team to stand up in front of the group and act out the answer.
  • Step 5: Each team rolls a die. The team with the highest roll goes first, and that team’s actor draws a folded index card from the other team’s basket or bowl. Give the actor a minute to review the charade phrase before timing begins.
  • Step 6: The player acts out the first syllable or word on the card for their teammates. When a player on the team guesses correctly, the actor indicates to their team that they are correct by placing their index finger on their nose. Then they move to the next word until their team guesses the right answer or runs out of time.
  • Step 7: Alternate teams when the timekeeper indicates the round is over. The timekeeper marks one point per correctly guessed charade per round. The first team to reach 10 points wins!
  • FACT: In 1800s England, charades was popular among the rich and famous, including authors Charlotte Bronte and H.G. Wells.

  • Timer
  • Teams

  • FACT: There’s an electronic version of the game, featuring an automatic bottle that spins, shines a light, and issues “Truth or Dare”-like challenges.

How to Play Truth or Dare https://howcast.com/videos/111910-how-to-play-truth-or-dare/ Thu, 18 Dec 2008 14:45:42 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/111910-how-to-play-truth-or-dare/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Decide who goes first Decide who goes first by drawing straws or picking names out of a hat.
  • Step 2: Pick a victim The player who won the right to go gets the ball rolling by asking someone in the group, ‘Truth or Dare?’
  • Step 3: Ask a question If ‘Truth’ is chosen, the asker poses a question—ideally one that will require the player to reveal something he or she doesn’t want to be made public, like if they have ever cheated on a significant other.
  • TIP: Ask the other players to help choose a question or dare; they may have some insight that you don’t—like the person in the hot seat has a secret crush or is terrified of heights.
  • Step 4: Assign the dare If the player doesn’t want to answer the question, a dare must be performed—something along the lines of eating a dog treat, or going somewhere public and shouting, ‘My rash has cleared up and I’m looking for love!’
  • Step 5: Issue penalty Should the player refuse to answer a question and fail to complete a dare, a penalty may be issued, which can be a dare that’s even worse than the one the person failed!
  • Step 6: Continue Once the truth or dare is fulfilled, the player who complied gets to pick a victim, and so on and so forth.
  • FACT: Once a game for adolescents and teens, Truth or Dare now has an adult following—there are even online websites dedicated to the game.

You Will Need

  • At least two players
  • Highly personal questions
  • Creative dares

How to Get a Cork Out of an Empty Wine Bottle https://howcast.com/videos/8423-how-to-get-a-cork-out-of-an-empty-wine-bottle/ Tue, 27 May 2008 14:01:14 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/8423-how-to-get-a-cork-out-of-an-empty-wine-bottle/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Insert a plastic bag Roll up a plastic bag and push it into the bottle. Put the closed, bottom part in first, keeping a few inches of the open top part of the bag sticking out from the neck of the bottle.
  • Step 2: Turn bottle upside down Move the cork up toward the bag by flipping the wine bottle upside down. You want the cork to rest at the entrance to the bottle’s neck, with the bag extending beyond it into the bottle.
  • Step 3: Blow it up Blow into the plastic bag to inflate it.
  • TIP: If you don’t have a plastic bag, you can use a cloth napkin—just feed it into the bottle, tip the bottle until the cork gets snagged in the napkin, and pull it out.
  • Step 4: Pull Twist the mouth of the plastic bag to partially seal it. Pull the bag out of the bottle, and the cork will come out with it!
  • FACT: Until the late 1600s, wine bottles in France were ‘corked’ with oily rags.

You Will Need

  • A wine bottle with a cork inside
  • A plastic bag

How to Play Strip Poker https://howcast.com/videos/1062-how-to-play-strip-poker/ Tue, 05 Feb 2008 11:09:56 +0000 https://howcast.com/videos/1062-how-to-play-strip-poker/

Instructions

  • Step 1: Pick a gambler’s game like five-card draw, which has three rounds of betting.
  • Step 2: Agree on rules. Like the order in which clothes have to be removed. And whether or not jewelery counts.
  • Step 3: Have everyone ante up an initial bet, like a single article of clothing, before the cards are dealt.
  • Step 4: Starting with the person to his or her left, the dealer gives each person five cards, face down.
  • Step 5: After everyone looks at their cards the person to the dealer’s left begins the round of betting, stating the number of articles of clothing they’re willing to wager. Everyone follows, matching the bet, raising it, or folding.
  • TIP: In some games players start out with a small amount of money and must resort to their clothes if their cash runs out.
  • Step 6: When the betting is done players get to trade in up to five cards.
  • Step 7: After everyone receives their new cards, there’s another round of betting.
  • Step 8: Once this final round of betting is completed, players show their hands. The losers have to pay up, or strip down.
  • Step 9: Continue dealing and playing hands until everybody except one person is smiling sheepishly in their skivvies… or less!
  • FACT: Did you know? The first computer strip poker game came out in 1982.

You Will Need
