How to Do a Singing Exercise Warm-Up

Transcript

Hi. I’m Anya Singleton, and this is my friend and accompanist, Matt Gallagher. We’re going to talk about some vocal exercises you can do to warm up.

A nice one that I like to start with is doing an exercise that’s all on the same pitch, because it enables you to tune and listen a little bit better. We’re going to do it just on an open vowel sound, what we call ‘Italian vowels’. They’re just open vowels. Here we go.

That’s an example of just staying on the pitch. They’re all the same note, but it lets you tune in, to make sure that you’re really listening.

Another one that I like to do enables you to work through the chords. We’re moving up half a step. We’re going to do it a little bit differently. First, we’re going to travel up, and then we’re going to travel back down, so that you can listen in and make sure you’re really tuning in. At the same time, it works on your range.

That way, you’re alternating going up and coming back down. You do have to listen because you’re on certain pitches. That way, you’re really making sure that you’re locked in.
