How to Make Ice Cream Cake

Instructions

  • Step 1: Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap. Be sure the wrap covers the entire inside of the pan, and leave at least 6 inches of extra plastic wrap around the edges.
  • Step 2: Allow the ice cream to soften Remove the ice cream from the freezer and allow it to soften slightly.
  • Step 3: Cut cake into slices and line the pan Cut the cake into ⅓-inch thick slices and place them around the inside of the loaf pan, fully covering the bottom and all of the sides.
  • TIP: Add extra flavor by drizzling ¼ cup flavored liqueur over the cake once you have lined the pan.
  • Step 4: Fill pan with ice cream; top with cake Fill the pan to the top with ice cream and smooth the surface with the spatula. Then top it with additional slices of cake, gently pressing down.
  • TIP: Combine two flavors of ice cream in one cake. Add a thin layer of one flavor, top it with a thin layer of cake, and add another flavor before finishing with the final cake layer.
  • Step 5: Cover with plastic wrap and freeze Tightly cover the top of the pan with plastic wrap. Place the cake in the freezer for at least an hour, until it is very firm.
  • TIP: Make individual ice cream cakes using flat-bottomed ice cream cones. Fill each cone two-thirds with cake, top with ice cream, and freeze.
  • Step 6: Remove plastic wrap and place cake on a plate Unwrap the cake pan and use the excess plastic wrap around the sides to lift the cake from the pan. Then place the cake on a serving plate and remove the rest of the plastic wrap.
  • Step 7: Frost or garnish as desired Frost the cake or coat it with whipped cream. Add candies, sprinkles, sliced fruit, or any other garnishes you’d like. Now dig in and enjoy your tasty concoction.
  • FACT: Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, the fourth President of the U.S., served strawberry ice cream as a treat for guests at his inaugural ball.
