How to Make a Fondant Octopus for a Beach Theme Cake

Transcript

So now I’m going to show you how to make an octopus. I’m going to take some orange fondant, which you can buy in the store, in a craft store or in a cake supply store. I’m going to take a golf size amount. So it should pretty much be the size of a golf ball. And then I’m going to roll it until it’s nice and smooth. This will be his body. And I’m going to take a ball tool and just make dents for his eyes so we know where to put them when we’re done. Then I’m going to take a tool with a nice, pointy tip, and I’m going to make his smile right in the front. Then I’m going to set that aside until we’re ready to use it again. And I’m going to take some more of our orange fondant, and I’m going to roll it again just so it’s smooth. I’m going to use some cornstarch so that it doesn’t stick to me, or it doesn’t stick to the mat. And I’m going to make his tentacles. I’m just going to roll our orange fondant into a log like so.

And then I’m going to take our cutting tool, and I’m going to cut his legs, each pretty much the same size like so. And then what I’m going to do is I’m going to take them, and I’m going to flatten out the bottoms with my finger. And I’m going to arrange them as they would be arranged on the octopus. And if you can’t find orange fondant, you can always make it and buy some food coloring that you can also find in the craft store or in a cake supply store. So I’m going to arrange them in a circle around where the body would be. Then I’m going to take our water, which is our glue, and I’m going to put them at the ends. And then I’m going to take our octopus, and I’m going to lay him on the legs. And then what I’m going to do is take the bottoms and bring them up.

And then I’m going to pinch them at the bottom so that they stay up. With your finger, with the tip of your finger, just pinch. Bring it up, and pinch, so that they look like moving tentacles. Now I’m going to take the eyes that we had previously made in the beginning. It’s white fondant. Roll them into a ball and then flatten them like so, and use them as his eyes. We’re going to use an edible marker, and I’ve chosen blue, for his eyes. Just going to do it right in the center. And then you’re all done with your octopus. And this can be used for a sea cake or any other type of cake you would like to use it on.
