How to Disassemble a Smith & Wesson .45

Transcript

Today we’re going to talk about how to disassemble the Smith & Wesson 45 caliber Model 4516 pistol.

First thing you want to do before disassembling the gun is to make sure the gun is safe and empty. So you want to remove the magazine from the gun and rack the slide back. There you can do a visual and physical inspection of the gun to make sure there are no rounds left in it. Stick your finger in, make sure there’s nothing there. Look into the barrel. Once you have confirmed there’s no rounds left, you can rack the slide go and make the gun safe.

Okay. First step you need to do is you need to take the pressure off the slide and pull back. From here, you have to line up this little notch on the slide with the slide release lever. Once that’s lined up, you reach on the other side, there’s a little piece protruding, and you push it out. All right, that piece will come out and you just remove it like that. Put that to the side and your gun will just slide forward.
From here there’s nothing left on the frame to remove. Just put it down.

The next step would be to take the spring off the gun. So you push the spring forward just a little bit and remove the spring. It comes out and you put that down.

The only piece left to remove now is the barrel. So what you do is you get your finger on the ejection port here and you push it up a little bit and you can pull it right out.

And that’s how to disassemble a Smith & Wesson 45 caliber pistol.
